| Passivearmada11-19-07, 08:14 PM | Welcome to a thread where you can ask a question and people can answer them for you. I will do my best to try and answer them, but I can't answer all of them for sure. Here are some of my questions: 1. Where are the dwarves of Faerub primarily located. I know they're everywhere, but is there a certain ciatadel or nation where they are at their largest??? 2. If ants can lift up to 80 times their weight then shouldn't formians get like +15 strength? |
| Stigger11-19-07, 08:19 PM | The North and the Great Rift, east of the Shaar are the biggest population centers of the dwarves that I'm aware of, barring events in novels. As to ants and formians, doubtful... physical size restrictions on insects due to their physiology would presumably apply. Though I guess if we can ignore that enough to allow Really Big Spiders, then maybe it could. |
| Sol_Odlanier11-19-07, 08:23 PM | -Where can I find the Bhaalspawn template? |
| Stigger11-19-07, 08:52 PM | Don't think there is one officially, but I'm fairly sure someone put one together here somewhere here on the boards, unofficially... at least I seem to recall hearing one being mentioned before. Think there might be a list of official templates somewhere over on Candlekeep though that you might try. |
| MerrikCale11-19-07, 08:55 PM | why does mickey mouse wear pants and no short but donald wears a shirt and no pants? |
| Old Sage11-19-07, 09:08 PM | -Where can I find the Bhaalspawn template? The Bhaalspawn template for 3e was presented in DRAGON #288. |
| BadCatMan11-19-07, 09:12 PM | why does mickey mouse wear pants and no short but donald wears a shirt and no pants? Because they're animals, and animals go around naked anyway. So they'll wear what they like. |
| MerrikCale11-19-07, 10:11 PM | If elves are such gifted mages and naturally inclined to the Art, why aren't they sorcerer instead of wizards? |
| Lord Karsus11-20-07, 01:00 PM | -What is Elves of Faerūn? |
| Stigger11-20-07, 01:24 PM | Can't say I've ever heard of Elves of Faerun... closest thing I can think of is the old 2e Demihumans of the Realms. |
| MerrikCale11-20-07, 09:18 PM | -What is Elves of Faerūn? nice! |
| Lord Karsus11-20-07, 11:21 PM | nice! -Because of you, I feel compelled to post that whenever I can. |
| MerrikCale11-21-07, 11:09 PM | -Because of you, I feel compelled to post that whenever I can. then my work here is done. |
| Sol_Odlanier11-22-07, 09:46 AM | How good is th Red Wizard Prc? |
| MerrikCale11-22-07, 09:52 AM | How good is th Red Wizard Prc? I thought those dudes were evil? |
| Sol_Odlanier11-22-07, 10:16 AM | :embarrass...... i Meant Good as in Practical or useful ( I have problems getting my self understood in english sorry bout that... |
| Suin Bahhar11-22-07, 10:29 AM | The Red Wizards of Thay are D&Ds best specialist wizards and are capable of scary circle magic. Who was the reigning mulhorandi godking during Thayds life? What happened to the faithless imaskari souls? They became kaorti or did they go into the fugues Wall? |
| Lord Karsus11-22-07, 10:47 AM | I thought those dudes were evil? -Oh Merrik. :D |
| Avatar of Kokusho11-23-07, 08:47 AM | Generally the Faithless go into the mass of souls in the Fugue Plane or get bargained off to devils, but that's a completely different story. Red Wizards...decent PrC, but useless unless you have other Red Wizards who are around to form a circle with you...and I doubt that Hathran circle magic and Red Wizard circle magic are compatible, even if a hathran would help a Red Wizard in the first place. |
| MerrikCale11-23-07, 09:15 AM | :embarrass...... i Meant Good as in Practical or useful ( I have problems getting my self understood in english sorry bout that... its not you. I was being funny. or maybe not funny |
| Suin Bahhar11-23-07, 10:38 AM | Are gargoyles constructs? |
| Stigger11-23-07, 11:28 AM | I would tend to say yes... but I'm not actually sure. Going by the old 2e Gargoyles as golems thing, but that might have been from Ravenloft. |
| johnkretzer11-23-07, 12:34 PM | Are gargoyles constructs? According to the MM they are Monstrous Humaniods with the Earth subtype. |
| MarkusTay6311-23-07, 01:54 PM | 1. Where are the dwarves of Faerub primarily located. I know they're everywhere, but is there a certain ciatadel or nation where they are at their largest???All Torillian Dwarves originated in the massive Yehimal Mountain Range, and do to some un-explained event they were forced to migrate in every direction, including Zakhara and Kara-Tur. The first settlement in Faerūn was Bhaerynden, founded in -15000 DR why does mickey mouse wear pants and no short but donald wears a shirt and no pants?Because the guy they mugged was only wearing one set of clothes, and they split the spoils. -What is Elves of Faerūn?I believe the name was changed to Elven Netbook... because the name Karsus' Folly was already in use. ;) If elves are such gifted mages and naturally inclined to the Art, why aren't they sorcerer instead of wizards?Actually, they were. Their original form of magic was sorcery and shamanistic in nature, with much singing, dancing, chanting, and smoking/consuming hallucinogenic substances (hence the term "HIGH Magic"). When they arrived on Faerūn, they couldn't find any helpful cactus, mushrooms, or 'pipeweed', but what they did find was the Weave, which used a specialized form of casting called "Vancian". They had no idea who this guy "Vance" was, but they took to the weave and all its rules like a fish takes to water, and adapted their original Sorcery (Fey-blooded) spells to this new format. Some folks say that when the world changs, the Elves may be in the best position to develop new magical traditions, based on the lore of their ancient forefathers. They may even bring back the Dancing Places - I heard they are working on a cantrip called Disco Ball. 2. If ants can lift up to 80 times their weight then shouldn't formians get like +15 strength? They should - at least that much. A Formian, if written with science in mind, SHOULD be able to juggle elephants. However, another little piece of science (gravity, I believe) interferes with tiny creatures amazing abilites, so as a creature type gets larger, their abilties DO NOT increase proportionately - it falls under the Law of Diminishing Returns. Ergo Formians should still be way stronger then they look, but not nearly as strong (proportionately) as their tiny cousins. Gravity can be a b_tch sometimes - thats why you don't find creatures much larger then insects walking across ceilings. Are gargoyles constructs?Seriously - they are both. A Gargoyle is a creature type (used to be a lesser demon, but now they appear to be some form of elemental) - they are living creatures, along with all the normal ecology that implies. There is also a gargoyle Golem (both a stone and Iron variety) from the old Mystara campaign, but I think only the Iron one made it as far as 2e. These were constructs based on the origianl creatures. The original ones also have an aquatic variety (Kapocinth) and a larger, more horrid kind called a Margoyle. The Margoyle may be the 'Demonic Variety' - they are said to speak their own language (Abyssal?) and that of normal Gargoyles, and also get a horn aattack! Add in the fact that they often act as leaders of tribes of normal ones (much like the Lizard-Kings do), and it appears that we have located a demonic connection to this race (which fits really well, considering some of the RW folklore surrounding them). Why are there no Centaur Kingdoms in Faerūn anymore? |
| Lord Karsus11-23-07, 02:05 PM | Why are there no Centaur Kingdoms in Faerūn anymore? -All of the elders are turned into glue, so there's no one wise enough to found any more kingdoms. |
| MerrikCale11-23-07, 08:52 PM | -All of the elders are turned into glue, so there's no one wise enough to found any more kingdoms. Again, nicely done sir! |

| Lord Karsus11-24-07, 02:11 PM | Why is WotC destroying the Realms?:hides: -Because they need to stop 18DELTA! |
| MarkusTay6311-24-07, 03:53 PM | No... Why is WotC destroying the Realms?:hides:Because unlike the previous designers who gave us 'utter cr@p', this new group can produce "really cool" material. or so they say..... Why do fools fall in love? |
| johnkretzer11-24-07, 03:55 PM | Why is WotC destroying the Realms?:hides: I got a couple of answears to this one.... 1) Because it is COOL!!! and AWESOME!!!! 2) Because the current WotC staff are a bunch of uncreative people who have to bring the entire game down to their creative level. 3) Because in the short run it will make them more money. 4) Because they are sick of some 35 year old looser who lives in his parents basement calling them idiots because they can't get simple facts straight.(just a generalization not directed at anybody on this board...if it does descibe you though get a life) I could go on.... |
| Lord Karsus11-24-07, 04:17 PM | Why do fools fall in love? -'Cause they're fools. Duh. |
| Suin Bahhar11-24-07, 05:18 PM | The Realmspace sourcebook says that they are portals to the Plane of Radiance.Brilliant! This plane is the borderplane of positive energy and elemental plane of fire right? Are wingless sphinxes known in Fearun? |
| Old Sage11-24-07, 07:16 PM | This plane is the borderplane of positive energy and elemental plane of fire right?'Tis a Quasi-Elemental Plane, yes. Are wingless sphinxes known in Fearun?I'm going to say 'definitely maybe.' As I recall, they are... but it's been a while since I've checked up on this particular derivative of the standard sphinx. |
| 18DELTA11-24-07, 11:42 PM | -Because they need to stop 18DELTA! Why do they need to stop me? I am just a goof-ball that is wasting time until August of next year. But hey if WotC needs to stop me cool, awesome, what are some of the other buzzwords that our fearless WotC leaders keep saying?:P |

| Lord Karsus11-25-07, 12:39 AM | Why do they need to stop me? I am just a goof-ball that is wasting time until August of next year. -They have nothing better to do. What do you think they're doing? Designing intriguing lore, or something? You are the wisest Arch-Wizard I have ever met!;) :P :D -I know, right? |
| johnkretzer11-25-07, 12:39 AM | I got a couple of answears to this one.... I just thought of another one.... 5) This is a conspiracy one: The WotC design team are really closet Right Winged christains who are doing this to finally destroy D&D to save our souls.:incog: |
| Sol_Odlanier11-25-07, 01:07 AM | -What are the stats or the "Kunai"? You know that dagger like weapon that ninjas use.... |
| Sol_Odlanier11-25-07, 03:53 AM | Why is it that all they do in the D&D forums is "create" classes? Why is it always about totally silly like "naruto" or "300"? Why I feel like a Guru in the D&D forums but like a total retard in the FR, and feel "more better" here anyways? |
| Lord Karsus11-25-07, 03:58 AM | Why is it that all they do in the D&D forums is "create" classes? Why I feel like a Guru in the D&D forums but like a total retard in the FR, and feel "more better" here anyways? -Hey, creating classes is fun. I'm into that lately. -Anyway, I think we're a bit more intellectual because there is no such thing as a 'Generic D&D storyline'. The only canon they have, are rules and such. Here, we have much more interesting things, like lore. -And, we have plenty of over-the-top personalities. That helps, too. |
| Suin Bahhar11-25-07, 04:58 PM | -What are the stats of the "Kunai"? You know that dagger like weapon that ninjas use....Just normal daggers. Funny that, but true. You could say they are ninja-to (i.e. short swords) but they can be thrown, which should make them exotic weapons equivalent of the drow long knives. But normal daggers fits best. Are there any famous labyrinths near Chessenta? |
| BadCatMan11-25-07, 06:45 PM | There's nothing famously labyrinthine in Chessenta in the lore. You could try the Temple Of The Splendor Of Splendors (apparently a famous dungeon, described in the dungeons section in the FRCS 3e) or the Pyramid Of Cimbar. Add a maze and a minotaur and you're good to go. |
| MarkusTay6311-25-07, 06:54 PM | 4) Because they are sick of some 35 year old looser who lives in his parents basement calling them idiots because they can't get simple facts straight.(just a generalization not directed at anybody on this board...if it does descibe you though get a life).I'm 43 and it's my sister's basement... shows you what YOU know. :pbbbtt: -They have nothing better to do. What do you think they're doing? Designing intriguing lore, or something? Now you're just being silly... -Anyway, I think we're a bit more intellectual because there is no such thing as a 'Generic D&D storyline'. The only canon they have, are rules and such. Here, we have much more interesting things, like lore.Doesn't that mean that if they 'nuke' all of the previous lore with 4e, we too will become mindless drones capable of little more then designing new classes, feats, and templates? I guess that would make US designers then, huh? |

| Lord Karsus11-25-07, 08:05 PM | I'm 43 and it's my sister's basement... shows you what YOU know. :pbbbtt: -It's weird that you're 43. Hell, your son is my age. Again, weird. Doesn't that mean that if they 'nuke' all of the previous lore with 4e, we too will become mindless drones capable of little more then designing new classes, feats, and templates? -Admittedly, there's a little more to them than just that. But, even if they erase *ALL* previous lore (which is something they aren't doing), the Realms will still live on in our own campaigns, and in the various projects everyone has going on. I guess that would make US designers then, huh? -Freelance, of course. |
| Sol_Odlanier11-27-07, 05:43 PM | Can anyone (hopefully Mula since he's the "defender of this" blasfemy, but anyone will do;) ) tell me how different would be playing a Great Wyrm Red Dragon And a CE Great Wyrm Gold Dragon? |

Yeah, I know about the Dragon articles... :( Well Stig, The Volo's guides were almost all lore and had very little *cool* stuff. Why would anyone want a description of a town, NPC, or an area with out stat blocks? You silly 2e fan. You only need to know stats for D&D so you can kill things and take their stuff. Get with the program you old fart.;) :P :D |
| Stigger11-28-07, 04:23 PM | Its a stacked game to begin with... start doing your own stacking and it gets better. ;) :D  Thanks for that answer Fin, makes me just really feel the love. :P :D |
| Faraer11-28-07, 05:28 PM | Why did the Volo's Guides have to stop being published? This decision was never explained, beyond vague innuendo. |
| OrderofUhlrik11-28-07, 05:55 PM | Why does/did Karsus have so much damned hubris? :P |
| Stigger11-28-07, 06:52 PM | Well, see, just before he started casting they were having a sale on it over at the local apothecary, 10 for 1 sort of deal, so he just went nuts and stocked up while the price was low... the rest is history. :D |
| Passivearmada11-28-07, 07:47 PM | -Now you must be terminated, Armada...Come with my friend, here...:incog: Oh, we'll see who gets terminated in the end... Not threateningly, of course... DUN DUN DUUUUHN!!! :evillaugh :P Nah, I'd lose. But humanoid mages must fall asleep eventually... |
| Lord Karsus11-29-07, 12:32 AM | Why does/did Karsus have so much damned hubris? :P -Why do birds fly? Why is water wet? Why don't fingers 'fing', when ringers 'ring'? Nah, I'd lose. But humanoid mages must fall asleep eventually... -Good thing this aspect of the tripartite Karsus is Elven. KtM is still Human. But, we're both pseudogods, though, so sleeping doesn't matter much to us. |

And even if you were, you would eventually underestimate something that would ultimately result in your end. It's extremely difficult for the human mind to grasp the concepts of infinity and immortality. I respect the great Lord Karsus, but if it comes to the death, then respect means nothing. |

| Suin Bahhar12-05-07, 10:28 AM | At what age does a human typically start going to a magic school? What happens to untrained sorcerers in rural areas? |
| Lord Karsus12-05-07, 10:38 AM | At what age does a human typically start going to a magic school? What happens to untrained sorcerers in rural areas? -The answer to both is: Depends on where this is taking place. |
| Suin Bahhar12-05-07, 10:40 AM | Lets say the Shadowdales. |
| Passivearmada12-05-07, 02:40 PM | For Suin Bahhar's question, sorcerers usually begin their magical development at puberty, so it's possible for a teen sorcerer to be accidentally casting spells. As for wizards, I'd imagine that they a) attend a university around the mid to late teen years, and well into their adulthood, if they are in an urban area b)are much younger if they are an apprentice to a lone wizard, mainly in a small town or village c) are the child of a wizard or wizards, and began training immediately after they learned to read (which would be young if both his/her parents are wizards- I started to read real books before I was three years old!) Now I'd like to ask if anyone knows of any catlike races with +1-2 CR/LA that can be used. I think Rakshasas are way too powerful. I was playing as a Khajiit on Morrowind, really liked the character, and thought that I should bring it to the table. If not, could someone share a homebrew race? I can edit it to fit my campaigns. Thanks :) |
| Passivearmada12-05-07, 02:43 PM | Also, does anyone know of some guidelines to naming characters? We were having a discussion on another thread about brain-mush names, and I was wondering if there's an actual way. |
| Redrake12-05-07, 03:12 PM | Link? You can go along with any name that you think is fitting and you can add an actual name of a city or region. Elenor of Waterdeep, for example. For wizards in general I tend to give them names that sound a bit like roman names: Aetius, Igantius, Magnus, Macellus, Faldius, Thalis. It also depends on the race. |

Invidius is the name of a spellcaster I have, which doesn't sound too Roman, but I like it :D |
| Redrake12-05-07, 04:40 PM | Invidius sounds like Jealousy. Alternatively, you can go for the tool provided by WotSC: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20010208b |

The only reason I have two here is because the original - just plain, old MarkusTay - wouldn't work for awhile. | Lord Karsus12-11-07, 11:31 PM | are there any rules for losing limbs? i.e. you take x amout of damage and you lose something? If not what's the point of regeneration spell? -I don't know, but I don't think so. I include dismemberment in my campaigns when it suits the story. For example, I allowed the PCs to cut off the hand of the BBEG, because I want to give the Anti-Paladin a Fiendish graft. -I remember in one campaign I was playing in, the GM (As it was a Star Wars game), had my character's arm cut off with a viroblade. It was tough being a 3rd Level Jedi Councilor with one arm... |

Is a Template found in Moster Manual III, where you take a spell and make it a living creature. And that was my serious moment of the day (but I will take "Extra Seruious" Feat next level for a total of 3/day BABY!:P) |
| MarkusTay6301-06-08, 07:11 PM | I heard in 4e 'Seriousness' will be available 'X' amount of times per day, whereas semi-serious will be per encounter. :P |
| Lord Karsus01-06-08, 07:44 PM | Is a Template found in Moster Manual III, where you take a spell and make it a living creature. -Care to elaborate? I don't have MMIII, and that sounds intriguing. |

| XHereticX01-06-08, 08:01 PM | Is Mt. Everest in Disneyworld???:P |
| Ody_Saraph_of_Karsus01-06-08, 08:07 PM | Well, lorewise its a phenomenon that happened after "The Last War(Eberon?)" Where places were "basted by magic". Its an ooze that depending on its spell level has its Abilities, AC, CR and Damage determend. The caster Lv determends HD ans Size and when you attack it or it attacks you u suffer the effects of the spell (DC allowed) Oh yeah it can be made by more than one spell |
| Lord Karsus01-06-08, 08:07 PM | Is Mt. Everest in Disneyworld???:P -Only on Tuesdays. |
| Anastasio01-07-08, 09:31 AM | Thanks Ody. :) |
| Lord Karsus01-07-08, 12:34 PM | Well, lorewise its a phenomenon that happened after "The Last War(Eberon?)" Where places were "basted by magic". The caster Lv determends HD ans Size and when you attack it or it attacks you u suffer the effects of the spell (DC allowed) Oh yeah it can be made by more than one spell -So, basically, after the spell goes off, or before the spell goes off, it manifests physically as this ooze stuff. |
| Sol_Odlanier01-07-08, 02:08 PM | Pretty much, But is not like it will manifest right there where you cast it, it seem to be as if magic was "radiation" and the spell are manifestation of that "radioactive" area.... even tho I have this power gamer that will get a nice surprise when a Fireball spell comes back to bite his "four pionts of contact" |
| Lord Karsus01-07-08, 02:51 PM | -Oh, okay, that sort of makes sense. Seems to be something that really is specific to the setting (ie, Eberron), and can't really be imported with some tinkering. |
| MarkusTay6301-07-08, 03:27 PM | Also, AFAIK, the spell doesn't just "go off"; you will receive the Spell effects each and every time you come in contact with the spell. And they ALREADY are in FR - Halaster was experimenting with them just before he went KA-BOOM!. Its hinted at that he saw the Spellplague coming (or at least, "bad times ahead"), and was trying to stop it with this experimentation. What in hell Living Spells have to do with the Spellplague is anyone's guess, but I would think that quite a few of these will be around after the Spellplague 'goes off'. Its a dangerous world in 4e, with Living Fireballs roaming the Mourn... errr... I mean Heartlands. ;) |
| Lord Karsus01-07-08, 03:48 PM | Its hinted at that he saw the Spellplague coming (or at least, "bad times ahead"), and was trying to stop it with this experimentation. EDIT: Actually, no, he was cured of his insanity by this point... |
| MarkusTay6301-07-08, 03:55 PM | Correct... and he went immediately home and began experimenting with Living Spells in order to ward-off the coming Spellplague, which for some reason he was aware of, and perhaps even had a taste of sometime in the distant past. Now, that could be because he was insane, just like most mages will be after the Spellplague hits, or, it has something to do with the fact that he was "Shar's Creature" for so long! Either way, he was the only one (as far as we know), that saw it coming and tried to prevent it. There's a fine line between Insanity and Genius. ;) Gawd... I think I'll miss Halaster most of all... :allalone: |
| 18DELTA01-07-08, 03:56 PM | -Oh, okay, that sort of makes sense. Seems to be something that really is specific to the setting (ie, Eberron), and can't really be imported with some tinkering. -But we know you can do it LK. You are our only HOPE.:D |
| Lord Karsus01-07-08, 03:57 PM | -But we know you can do it LK. You are our only HOPE.:D -It's true, it's true. Sometimes, having the mantle of savior thrust upon you is weary. Especially without KtM...:( |
| MarkusTay6301-07-08, 04:13 PM | Maybe Karsus will become the mother-of-all Living Spells in 4e! :D |
| Lord Karsus01-07-08, 04:16 PM | -Maybe it'll be retconned that I was a living spell? WTF? |
| MarkusTay6301-07-08, 04:25 PM | No, Shar re-assembles you (probably did, in order to get the drop on Mystra in 1385), and immediately YOUR spell kicks-in again (no duration, remember? :D ). Cyric kills Mystra while you have control of the Weave, Savras uses his power to blast the Stone (YOU) into dust, Shar kills Savras, and Azuth and Velsharoon flee into the Astral... What no-one notices is that the dust you have become congeals into a malevolent cloud of hatred for all living things, and you become a Colossal Living Spell, with an infinite, random set of spells that activate against anyone! There are already are such things, in the Raurin desert. I forget their names, or what source they're in, but basically they are like giant magical storms that just tear everything in their path apart. |
| 18DELTA01-07-08, 04:29 PM | -Maybe it'll be retconned that I was a living spell? WTF? -Maybe he means "The Karsus Avatar Spell". Who knows maybe that spell becomes "The New God of Magic" in The 4E Realms? Maybe it finally works. Maybe that is what they say by the Spellplague having roots in previous lore? Nah it couldn't happen like that.;) |

Origins? |
| MarkusTay6301-07-08, 10:58 PM | The living duststorm Skriaxit is what you're thinking of. I am not malevolent, nor do I have a hatred of all living beings.Sure, not now... but in the mixed-up, crazy world of 4e, who knows? Being used for such a Nefarious purpose (to KILL Mystra and her Weave!) would probably destroy whatever little bit of sanity you would have left up 'till that point. After that, you'd want to get even with the world for what you've become. |
| Lord Karsus01-07-08, 11:14 PM | Sure, not now... but in the mixed-up, crazy world of 4e, who knows? | Caemun01-08-08, 01:12 AM | Is the Baldur's Gate games considered canon by their novelization? And if so, to what extent? |
| MarkusTay6301-08-08, 12:53 PM | If I'm not mistaken, only events covered in the novel are canon - anything else from the game is not. ALL novels, except for the Double-Diamond series, are considered part of the canon Realms, whereas games are not. A novel based on a game then becomes canon. *Some events in the Double-Diamond Series are slowly being made canon, but some wild things happened in them, so not all of it will make it into the canon Realms, AFAIK. |
| Lord Karsus01-08-08, 01:02 PM | If I'm not mistaken, only events covered in the novel are canon - anything else from the game is not. -Correct. For example, the plotline of Neverwinter Nights has to do with a plague sweeping through the town. AGHotR mentions this, so this much of the game is canon, but none of the rest of it is. |
| Suin Bahhar01-08-08, 04:29 PM | -Purpose? Origins?Skriaxits are Air-Earth Elementals summoned or created by ancient gods near deserts as spirits of vengeance. Only active when they hunger for destruction of (semi)intelligent life and slumbering as blackrocky scenery the rest of the time. Because the Plains of Purple Dust was the stage for the Imaskari godswar my guess is Ra or Anhur (or Enlil or Assuran) summoned several Skriaxits in the war against the Magelords of Imaskar and their forces and infrastructure. |

| Lord Karsus01-08-08, 11:37 PM | What source is this from - I know I've read it, but now I can't locate it. -Probably Old Empires. I've never really read that book, though I have it. |
| Suin Bahhar01-09-08, 07:26 AM | I used the guide to 3ed conversioned monsters on enworld for its newer stats. It originally appeared in the Old Empires yes, but was later released in the 2ed Monstrous Manual. The adventure in Old Empires features a storm of Skriaxits, a leader (24 HD) with 15 smaller (16HD) ones generating a real dust storm as never seen before... I really liked the work of Scott Bennie on this ancient area of the realms, the juicy bits on mulrohandi magic is especially good. |
| Diffan01-09-08, 09:12 AM | OK, here's my question: What effect would a ball of mud with the light spell cast on it, then thrown into the face of an enemy have. It would require a Ranged attack with possibily a called shot. Would it splatter and the enemy be blinded, dazed, dazzled, or nothing? If you were the DM, what would you do? Oh and my other question is, Can Mephits be familiars? |
| MarkusTay6301-09-08, 02:28 PM | I believe Mephits can be familiars - I'm sure I read that somewhere, probably in a Dragon magazine article. As far as the mud ball goes - normal magic items are considered destroyed when they are broken, so I would say that a 'temporary' one, like an item with a spell cast on it, would lose it's dweomer the second it hit and splattered. If the enemy has any sort of daylight-impairment on his vision, then I might say he was dazzled (stunned) for a round, but thats not really all that important... If the target does not make a reflex roll and close his eyes in time, the mud should effectively blind him for about 1D6 rounds, or until he is able to wipe it out of his eyes. At the very least, he should get a -1 to Hit do to a vision impairment until he is able to 'clean up'. Thats just me and how I'd rule it, but really it's up to the individual DM when a PC 'gets creative'. |
| JaiaDrottsingr01-09-08, 05:51 PM | OK, here's my question: What effect would a ball of mud with the light spell cast on it, then thrown into the face of an enemy have. It would require a Ranged attack with possibily a called shot. Would it splatter and the enemy be blinded, dazed, dazzled, or nothing? If you were the DM, what would you do? I have actually had to deliberate over this during a session once. I determined that since the character had set the spell on the mud itself, and not the air around it, the enemy was blinded by light brown mud. Since the mud in the area was clay, he also couldn't speak. But that was because the mage had set a fireball on his face after he got hit, poetically giving the gnoll a death mask. Little known mistruth: Faces make the best kilns. EDIT: After reading Markus' comment, I would like to disagree with his statement. It is not a magical item, it is a temporary enchantment. It would not be dispelled when broken, simply because, as mud is an amorphous solid, it would be unable to break anyway. |
| MarkusTay6301-09-08, 11:04 PM | But then the enchantment would have to have been cast upon a single 'mud molecule' in order for the Dweomer to to stay intact, because if it was cast on mud that was later seperated, it breaks the rules for the spell (ie, creating a single point of light, not multiple ones). If magic worked that way, I could cast light on Graham Cracker and break it into seperate pieces and hand each party member one to use. |
| Suin Bahhar01-10-08, 07:21 AM | I agree with Markus the object should stay in the exact shape and have the same amount of pieces on the moment of casting for the light spell to keep it magical matrix intact. You guys use called shot rules? How? Just like in 2ed i.e. a -8 to attack for a head or groin shot, a -4 to attacks on arms torsos and legs? |

We use a Call Shot table that goes like this: Size/Modifier Tiny/ No called shot Small/ +6 AC Medium/ +4 AC Large/ +4 AC Huge/ +2 AC Gargantuan/ No modifier Colossial/ No modifier Head Shot: Making a called shot to the head is a full-round action which provokes attacks of opportuinities. If successful, the attack is treated as a critical threat. Weapons that do not deal lethal damage are not subject to this rule. Creatures with no discernable anatomony or those normally unaffected by critical hits are not subject to this rule. Limb Shots: Making a successful called shot to a limb will reduce the speed of the target by 5 ft. and/or reduce attacks according to limb being hit. Weapons that do not deal lethal damage ar not subject to this rule. Creatures with no discernable anatomony are not subject to this rule. Thanks for your guys thoughts. As much as I like JaiaDrottsingr idea (much more benificial), I would probably go with MarkusTay's statement. Maybe making him wipe off the gunk a move-equivalent action? :D As for the Mephits, I'll look into they're HD and compare them to other Improved Familiar's HD to determine what level a wizard could gain one. That's probably the easiest way. |

I may steal this but with some more flexible modifiers. The relative smallness of the actual creature parts is used to determine the ac bonus to his smaller targeted parts right? A large creature has a head two size categories smaller and a limb one category smaller so it usually gets a +4 higher AC for its head. The difference in size between the attacker and defenders bodyparts will determine the ac modifier. So your list would look like this for a large creautre atacking a medium one: Size/Modifier Tiny/ No called shot Small/ No called shot Medium/ +6 AC Large/ +4 AC Huge/ +4 AC Gargantuan/ +2 Colossial/ No modifier So a large ogre wouldn't be able to plant a treetrunk between the eyes of a normal human because the human head is effectively tiny for the ogre. Would you think allowing for one more smaller category to be targetted (at a +8 AC) to be very unbalancing? |

I'll show this to my group and see if they like your changes, I know I do. Thanks! :) |
| MarkusTay6301-11-08, 02:33 PM | I think I'm going to borrow that for something I'm working on - hit locations for 3e. I can extrapolate a table from that - well done guys! :D |
| Suin Bahhar01-11-08, 05:01 PM | Oh. I see I made a slight error in the post above. It should be more like this: The difference in size between the attacker and defenders bodyparts will determine the ac modifier. A head is two times smaller than the size of the creature itself, a limb on size smaller. Every step of a size category within the difference between the attacker and the bodypart infers a +2 AC bonus if the part is smaller and a -2 AC penalty if the part is larger that the attacker. The called shot is made with a standard +4 AC bonus for the defender as a full round action that provokes AoO's. So your list would look like this for a large creautre attacking a creature in the legs (effective target is one size smaller than the creature): Size Target/Modifier to AC bodypart Tiny/ No called shot Small/ No called shot Medium/ +8 AC Large/ +6 AC Huge/ +4 AC Gargantuan/ +2 AC Colossial/ No modifier So a large ogre wouldn't be able to plant a treetrunk between the eyes of a normal human because the human head is effectively tiny for the ogre. |
| MarkusTay6301-11-08, 06:32 PM | So , then would this be right - Called Shot Table AC added to defender’s Limbs/Head Attacker's Size Category Defender Tiny Small Medium Large Huge Gargantuan Colossal Tiny +4 /+6 +6 /+8 +8 /NP NP NP NP NP Small +2/ +4 +4 /+6 +6 /+8 +8 /NP NP NP NP Medium - /+2 +2 /+4 +4 /+6 +6 /+8 +8 /NP NP NP Large NM - /+2 +2 /+4 +4 /+6 +6/+8 +8 /NP NP Huge NM NM - /+2 +2 /+4 +4 /+6 +6 /+8 +8 /NP Gargantuan NM NM NM - /+2 +2 /+4 +4 /+6 +6 +8 Colossal NM NM NM NM - /+2 +2 /+4 +4 /+6 NP = Not Possible, NM = No Modifier Does that look like it? |
| Suin Bahhar01-11-08, 08:16 PM | Bump every AC modifier one higher so a large creature would not have a chance targetting a medium creatures head. Nice diagram! EDIT: On second thought I think I like yours better. |
| JaiaDrottsingr01-12-08, 11:01 PM | I would believe that a bare minimum Colossal (let's say 25 feet tall, 30 long), would be able to grab onto the limbs of a large medium ranked humanoid (6' 5" maybe). It's like holding onto a pathetically small pencil. *Yanks apart infinitesimal dollummy in hands by holding two limbs in each palm and pulling.* |
| MarkusTay6301-12-08, 11:08 PM | After a successful grapple he could - it wouldn't be a called shot though. ;) |
| JaiaDrottsingr01-14-08, 10:39 PM | True. Here's one out to everyone: Because Air Genasi do not have to breathe, and the fact that they are light weight, are they a suitable substitute for Water Genasi in an underwater campaign? |
| MarkusTay6301-15-08, 03:21 AM | I don't see why not. ________________________________________ ____________________ I understand that in the 3e you can't have both the Vampire and Lycanthrope templates... but why not? As long as you are a Werewolf first, and are bitten by the vamp while in human form, it should work? I realize that the other way around would not, because Lycanthropy could not effect dead tissue. Also, does Polymorph effect creature type? If it does, then none of the template restrictions would apply, if you know that spell. |
