I have seen numerous posts here and elsewhere looking for words and phrases that are in true Realms elven -and not Tolkien based elfish. These words and phrases crop up all over the place - in the core rules books, the various Realms source books, the novels and Dragon magazine. I thought it would be very useful (and possibly even fun) to gradually collect these in one easy to find list.

I know Realms elven was originally related to the elven languages of other worlds but it is now a separate language in its own right. To avoid mixing up other D&D elven terms we should use Realms specific material for our sources. We should only use Dragon magazine if it specifically says the material applies to the Realms. I think we should include the Realms novels as well as the source books.

I am most definitely not going to take credit for this  I also do not expect any one person to do most of the work. This is a communal project! What I would like you to do is this - if you come across a word or phrase in Elven then write a short post here telling us the word, the translation and the source book. I will edit the actual list - keeping it up to date.

Thanks for volunteering to compile, kiwidoc.

Al hond ebrath, uol tath shantar en tath lalala ol hond ebrath.
A true friend, as the trees and the water are true friends.
(Elminster: The Making of a Mage p. 251)

Veluthil: beautiful of the evening (FR0D p. 26; FR7 p. 114)
veluthe: beautiful (FR7 p. 114)
thil: evening (FR7 p. 114)

Evereska: fortress home (Cyclopedia of the Realms p. 43)
Uluvathae (Oo-loo-VAW-thay: "[May your] fortune bring you joy") -- a friendly, informal greeting and parting used by elves and half-elves to others (of any race) they welcome the company of. Between close friends, its use is an insult, or a neutral "say-nothing-we're-being-listened-to" warning.("The Everwinking Eye: Word to the Wise", Polyhedron #74 p. 14)

NB (Cyclopedia of the Realms p. 8):From region to region of the Realms Common may have different accents and slightly different vocabularies, influenced by other local human and nonhuman tongues. While a native of Thay will be able to communicate with a denizen of Baldur's Gate, each will be aware of the otherís ridiculous accent.

In a similar fashion, non-human tongues each belong to the same linguistic tree, so that elves native to Evereska, Evermeet, and the Elven Court may understand each other (barring again local dialects and accent). To humans, an "elvish common" is referred to simply as elvish, and the "dwarvish common" as dwarvish.
