Power of Faerun excerpt, table of contents, chapter 2: (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ex/20060308a&page=1)

"Example: The Sothillisian Empire - Sothillis, Murkul of Murannheim"

So, the ogre mage in Amn isn't called Sythillis any more? And Murann became Murannheim? What gives?

Murann is still Murann - it's just the capital of the state called Murannheim.

And no one's really sure why the vowel change for the ogre ruler's name.

It is rumored that one of the editors or someone thought that Sythillis sounded funny when you said it, like an STD. I think they could have made the change to something that resembled the original name more.

Wow... that makes as much sense as the baernoloth fiends being named after Barney Gumble, a character from The Simpsons.

As a certain pirate would say - Why not just call all the characters "Evil" and "Bad" next time?

Yeah, even a few of the designers have expressed their dismay at the significant change.

Simply including a pronounciation guide would have fixed it. Sythillis (Sy-THILL-is) or something to make it apparent it is spoken not like syphillis.

Or rather something different than Sothillis, but more like Sythellis or Sythullis to preserve more of the original sound.

Minor quip though, in your own campaign it can still be Sythillis.

That was pure speculation on my part. I don't know why it was changed.

Ah, edited my post to be more accurate. Thanks, Eric.

-Perhaps Sythillis wanted to become less conspicuous. So, to do so, the Orge Mage changed his (or was it a her? I don't even recall) to Sothillis. Who would ever guess that Sythillis and Sothillis were the same being?

Of course, for all we know, the ogre mage in question (or his underlings) might have now completed a Common-Ogre lexicon, and as a result the accepted transliteration of the vowel in quesion among Realms scholars might have changed from "y" to "o".

I was going to suggest the same thing, some sort of translation error between Ogre and Common, but figured people would think of the same thing on their own.

Unfortunately the fact remains that it was changed, these sorts of things are rarely by accident, if everyone was specific enough to make the reference to the specific NPC's name. The letter change was not minor, not like a missing second "L" or something that might seem like a typo. Even Suthillis you can say someone hit the next key when typing this up.

Funny thing, the Art Gallery still has the name as Sythillis for the big guy's portrait.

Just try playing for a year in and around Muraan.

Sythillis
Sythillis
Sythillis
Sythillis
Sythillis
Sythillis

In the end he just became Syphilis. And it was the Sythilithisisithisian Empire. Blegh.

Perhaps he just found out about the human STD and decided to change it in embarrassment? I don't know how Power of Faerun has updated the Sythillisian Empire situation in Amn, but if he's planning on being a leader on the Faerunian world stage, and interested in trade and relations and whatnot, he might just change it to save face and present a respectable image.

A guy running a nation of ogres, orcs and assorted monsters in land he took by brutal force doesn't need any more blows to his respectability does he?

It is noted that his daughters Gonoreaa and Clamidia did later sue for emancipation from Sythilis and his wife, Herpas.

Actually, the wife is Cyrvisnea. It sounds like an STD though.

-I know that, I for one, cannot pronounce that.
