| doublesquirrel06-15-05, 11:45 PM | Is there one? If so, where? |
| Odin Olarin06-15-05, 11:57 PM | he sleeps for years at a time and awakens every so often to feast, and he will eat anything. The are lots of rumors involving the Tarrasque but as far as i know he lives underground, in the source How the Mighty Fallen, a netherese campaign, there is a location of the tarrasque in there i believe he is being watched over and worshipped by some barbarians while he slumbers. I'm pretty sure you can put him anyway, and i'd advise making him stronger, he was suppose to be a creature of legend, almost invincible, and while the new tarrasque is good some of his old qualities formt he 2e monster manual were better, My tarrasque is alot better then the Wizard's Tarrasque, after all he is the only one. I'm not sure if it is still there i dont think it is but back in 2e you had to drop him to -50 hp and cast a wish on him to kill him, i dont elieve you hav eot wish him to death anymore which is one of the things that upset me, anyway i haven't looked at his stats in a long long time, because to be honest there's more powerful stuff nowadays... and more challenging. |
| Kuje3106-16-05, 12:18 AM | Ed's given us some info on it as well in his files. See my sig. It also appears on the random encounter list, for Cormyr, in the El's Ecology box set. It has also attacked the Heralds Holdfast. |
| Xante Flatnose06-16-05, 08:03 AM | 2nd edition Tarrasque is so bad... We played How the mighty are fallen when 2nd edition was around. And It was fantastic. But now when I look to that days, Tarrasque`s statics were not good at all. 3rd edition version is much stronger, and deserves to be that stronger. |
| He Who Lurks06-16-05, 07:27 PM | The only thing I know about the Tarrasque in FR is that its pituitary gland was a material component for Karsus' Avatar, the spell that allowed the Netherese Archwizard Karsus to temporarily assume the powers of the then Goddess of Magic, Mystryl. So at least it exists, or did at one point. If the people in charge of obtaining the gland didn't kill it so many eons ago, then I imagine that it could still be alive. After all, removing the gland would hardly be fatal to the creature. It could grow a new one in minutes, if that long. |
| Hawkfeather06-17-05, 08:17 AM | In the Anauroch section of the Elminster's Ecology has a claim that the Tarrasque sleeps in the desert underground. |
| Kuje3106-17-05, 12:20 PM | In the Anauroch section of the Elminster's Ecology has a claim that the Tarrasque sleeps in the desert underground. That's the one I meant. :) Thought it was in the Cormyr mountains though. My fault. |
| Odin Olarin06-17-05, 02:04 PM | if you cracked open the tarrasque skull and ripped a piece of his brain out big deal, you had to wish him to death, so when they got that component for the spell he didn't die, at least i seriously doubt he did. and i was mistaken he still has to be wished dead, and i have to say after reviewing his stats he's not that bad, i think he deserves a bigger challenge rating but through and through he's not bad hoever i would increase his hit points by 2 or 3 hundred. |
| Zol Darklock06-18-05, 02:55 AM | The Tarrasque lies buried somewhere near the desert's edge along the Savage Frontier.....The ruins of Ascore beneath the 13 red five sided pyramids would be a good locaton....or somewhere in the Serpent Hills region, all them different reptile nations might be a good place to go lookin for it, or info on it |

| The WarOverlord06-23-05, 07:09 AM | Is there one? If so, where? According to a Demonology book I read there is only one Tarrasque in any place of existence at one time and if the Material form is slain it randomly just creates another one in another existence, otherwise the Material form once it has rampaged enough goes into a "coma" while the driving force and essence of it randomly goes to another part of existence to Rampage and Ravage, creating a new material form if necessary. Of course killing a Ravager/Tarrasque/Rampager/etc is almost impossible as it regenerates so fast, even from charred ashes that even the most powerful heros and some of the godlings have managed was to contain the material form of the Tarrasque in their Plane/Crystal Sphere/world so that it can't Rampage there anymore (essence immediately departs for another part of existence to rampage in) The Tarrasque is supposed to be a physical manifestation of Chaos incarnate if not merely a pet of forces beyond the comprehension of even the overgods if not one of the ancient forces/powers itself that temporally challenges the "Order" of the part of existence that it appears in until it is contented, detained, or destroyed. Any material form of it would probably logically be somewhare within the former Netherese Empire if that guy that try to become a god used it's organs as a component for his spell. (The Anauroch Desert) |

THe one my PCs faces in "Wake of the Ravager" was pretty Magic resistant and had to be taken down with constant pummeling with powerful (artifact) weapons and even then the thing was regenerating until the artifacts were mounted in the statues around it's remains placed in a special container to cforce the material form into a pocket dimension |
| Kuje3106-23-05, 11:14 AM | I don't believe the one Tarrasque thing, especially since in 2e there was a WHOLE PLANET filled with them. :) |
| Xante Flatnose06-23-05, 12:56 PM | Since Balor and Tarrasque have the same challenge rating (20). I think Tarrasque has the luck in that since he will hit in a chance of %100 and get hit by Balor in a chance of %25. Balor has spells and abilities, I accept that but CR 20 is somewhat low for a tarrasque... |
| Xante Flatnose06-23-05, 12:59 PM | I don't believe the one Tarrasque thing, especially since in 2e there was a WHOLE PLANET filled with them. :) It is written in page 240 monster manual tarrasque`s statics. |
| Kuje3106-23-05, 01:44 PM | It is written in page 240 monster manual tarrasque`s statics. Still doesn't make it true. :) |
| Blaze the monk06-23-05, 02:01 PM | My 20th level monk I played with 3 years ago (named Blaze, my 3rd and so far most successful ever character) Took the Tarrasque out in 1 round (2 if you count the surprise round). Admittedly The magic items she had were more powerful than were perhaps appropriate for our levels but this was before the epic level handbook had come out and there was very little scope for further advancement with the sourcebooks we then had. |
| Hawkfeather06-23-05, 05:19 PM | Kuje, I'd like to know more about this Tarraque Planet. Could you explain this better? Thanks a lot!!! |
| Kuje3106-23-05, 05:48 PM | Kuje, I'd like to know more about this Tarraque Planet. Could you explain this better? Thanks a lot!!! I think it's in Practical Planetology but that's one of the handful of Spelljammer sourcebooks I'm missing. :) Yeah a quick search on the mailing list shows that it is in that sourcebook. |
| NiTessine06-24-05, 01:26 PM | That's the one I meant. :) Thought it was in the Cormyr mountains though. My fault. Yeah, he's funny, that way... The box mentions a legend of the tarrasque sleeping below the ruins, but he's also in the encounter tables of the Storm Horns and Thunder Peaks... Guess he gets around a lot. |
| Razz06-26-05, 12:36 PM | Not that the tarrasque isn't hard to beat. Hard to kill at lower level, but not hard to beat. Buy a few scrolls of Command Undead, hire a necromancer, command a half a dozen allips, hae them hide beneath the ground where the tarrasque stands and touch him with its touch AC 5 and drain all its Wisdom to 0 since it is immune to ability damage but not ability drain (and there is no save against the allips' wisdom drain). There's your CR 20 XP with hardly any effort involved. |
| WALKAN06-27-05, 05:29 AM | I never liked the titan having a greater CR than the famous Tarrasque. But scince Epic Level Handbook... how fearsome is the Tarrasque. Take a good small slashing weapon and allow yourself to be swallowed. So you will only suffer the crushing damage and avoid beeing hit by 5 attacks a round. The Tarasque IS tough. Tougher than CR 20 if you ask me, but once you`re an epic charakter, you have greater worrys than a marauding dreadnaught. I think, there should be an epic Tarrasque. In 2e the Tarrasque was the one monster you never even hoped to defeat. Now she`s just the toughest non-epic monster. :whatsthis |
| RichardAdregen06-28-05, 05:08 PM | I always played it out that it couldn't be defeated. If you knocked it below -10 HP, it was simply knocked unconcious and would re-awaken in 3d6 hours, which pretty much does nothing for you unless you find some way to move it, which would be quite a feat in and of itself |
| Dark_beebles07-06-05, 03:45 AM | I think its powerful enuf. Its not supposed to be the strongest being in the universe. Its nearly unbeatable as it is, you gotta disentagrate it..and while its ashes wish that it cant be reformed. Thats what i read in the old monster manuals my brother has. I would still take it over any monsters in the monster manual cept solar. For the shear offensive, defense, and power it has. Only thing i would change would be it would have wings or ability to fly so many times a day. |
| The WarOverlord07-06-05, 03:00 PM | I don't believe the one Tarrasque thing, especially since in 2e there was a WHOLE PLANET filled with them. :) Immortal types can have as many Avatars active as they like based on thier Constitution score, and the "Chaos essence" that is the Tarrasque could probably manage to animate more then one Avatar at a time, but probably doesn't normally do so for the same reason the Borg only sends one Cube at a time to attack the earth in the Star Trek Universe (Just one active one is powerful enough to cause world havoc, so why send more?) Tarrasque Planet eh? Might be a/the "material form" storage facility that the "chaos essence" that drives the Tarrasque uses to make/store new "material forms" to be transported all over existence when a new area in time/space is selected to wreck havoc on. A immortal type that could have hundreds if not thousands of material forms active at one time is easily an "Ancient One" at the very least which Higher in immortal rank then Ao of the Forgotten Realms who is just a Overgod, and the Ubergod that Ao answers too (Even in immortality there is always a "bigger fish") |

If this is from a different campaign setting, then it's not true for FR or the other sphere where there is a whole planet filled with them. |
| GothicDan07-06-05, 03:12 PM | Are you referring to the Mystarran Immortals, Overlord? If so, why do you believe that the Tarrasque may be the manifestation of an Immortal, when all of the stats we've seen for it do not support that? Just curious. |

If so, why do you believe that the Tarrasque may be the manifestation of an Immortal, when all of the stats we've seen for it do not support that? Just curious. The Tarrasque is Chaos incarnate, which while it can be subdued or temporarily opposed, is eternal and can never be fully defeated. Mystarran? The Tarraque is usually classified as a type of Demon (mostly by the naive/ignorant, as it can be summoned and marginally controlled the same way as a Demon) though even Demon/Devil kind quake in their boots if even they are caught in it's "b-line" of destruction. |
| The WarOverlord07-07-05, 03:18 PM | Ah what? If this is from a different campaign setting, then it's not true for FR or the other sphere where there is a whole planet filled with them. There is only "1" for all of existance Of course, as there is more then one type of Elf, more then one type of Dwarf, and not all Dragons were not made from the finger tips of the "Elemental Gods" infused into a 6 legged lizzard.......perhaps the name "Tarrasque" has been applied to a lessor or like monster such as Dragon Turtles have the word "Dragon" in them though they are not Dragon or copy cat Dragons made by the other gods are called "Dragons" though the first immortals to create them were the "Elemental Gods". Things called "Tarrasque" v.s. "The Tarrasque" if you will? |
| GothicDan07-07-05, 03:51 PM | The Tarrasque is Chaos incarnate, which while it can be subdued or temporarily opposed, is eternal and can never be fully defeated. Er. I hope you're saying this is your opinion, as it certainly can be defeated according to its stats in all games. :) Mystarran? You were referring to Immortals and Avatars in regards to the Tarrasque. Immortals were the deities of the 2E Mystara campaign - effectively deities, but TSR wanted to stay away from the 'God' word, so they called them Immortals. The Tarraque is usually classified as a type of Demon (mostly by the naive/ignorant, as it can be summoned and marginally controlled the same way as a Demon) though even Demon/Devil kind quake in their boots if even they are caught in it's "b-line" of destruction. Once more... Is this a fluff-based suggestion, or are you inferring that this is supported in mechanics somewhere? |
| Alac Luin07-07-05, 04:09 PM | The Tarrasque entry in the monster manual does say there is only one. This has generally been accepted that there is only one per material plane/ planet/ crystal sphere. Or how ever you divide the multiverse in your games. So since there is this one in norther Cormyr / Anuroch border area, there probably will not be one in Maztica/Kara-tur/Thay etc... There was a planet introduced in the spelljamming setting a planet that was filled with Tarrasque, including young ones. I don't recall much else being said about it. This went against the “one -per” thing, but it's not like “only one in all the worlds” was what was intended. |

| Sigurd van Norhusen07-08-05, 06:48 AM | I think it's in Practical Planetology but that's one of the handful of Spelljammer sourcebooks I'm missing. Allow me to elaborate. The planet in question is Falx, a more or less "flat", rather hot, spherical earth body. It has few inhabitants due to its clime. On the surface, there are very large red/orange mosses and some reptiles. Among those reptiles, there are either the small, poisonous sort, or "Tarrasques". Note however that the book states that these are indistinguishable from the Tarrasque, but some sages say that there have to be subtle differences between the Tarrasque and these, because the Tarrasque is unique, while others say that the Tarrasque is simply a speciman that somehow ended up on another planet. There exist several hundred of these beasts. There is also stuff living below, but that's just Orcs, Goblins, Illithids and (rumored) Dwarves. |
| The WarOverlord07-08-05, 12:44 PM | If there's only one then WOTC retconned again because there's more then one in various 2e lore. :) Specifically "The Ravager" awakens in one of it's material forms in a random point in existence and wrecks havoc until contented or defeated then the material form "rests" as the essence moves to another random part of existence and it's material form awakens there and wrecks havoc until contented or defeated <repeat>. It, as a Immortal, could have material forms lying dorment all over the place with rumors of where the Tarrasque may be "sleeping" conflicting because of it's last b-line of destruction before going dorment as the essence moved on to another point in time/space |

Best guess is the things on the planet are called "Tarrasque" cause they look alot like "The Tarrasque" but are some kind of Dinosaur type creature (like a T-Rex or oversized v-raptor) with a Demonish looking head that makes it look like the material form of Choas incarnate known as "The Tarrasque". Like how Kender and Halfings are not the same thing though they look and act a lot alike  |
| The WarOverlord07-08-05, 01:00 PM | Still doesn't make it true. :) As a 2nd edition die hard I put little faith in 3rd Edition, especially the stuff added by WOTC that makes D&D more number crunching and PC building and less roll playing "Official" doesn't necessarily mean right and totally and unquestionably accepted either, or you must admit that "Dungeons and Dragons:The Movie" is a official world and everything within it is valid and right, and it was a good story/adventure cause it is a official WOTC product  |

And there are things that WOTC has termed unofficial. :) |
| Selgaunt07-08-05, 01:14 PM | I always thought that the 3rd edition of the Tarrasque wasn't powerful enough. CR 20! C'mon! A balor has the same CR, and A tarrasque could kill 5 of them at the same time by himself. According to 2nd and 3rd editions, the Tarrasque is UNIQUE, meaning there is only one of them on Faerun. In my book, that makes it one of the, if not the Most powerful creatures on the Continent. It's a pure killing machine. In my books, nobody should be able to defeat the Tarrasque. He's just too powerful! Like i said, that's just my opinion! |
| GothicDan07-08-05, 09:01 PM | The 2E monstrous manual tome says that it is rumored that there is only one Tarrasque in all existence. So, any speculation other than that, as to its Immortal status, its Avatars, etc., is only speculation unless there is printed material saying otherwise. It's just a rumor, which may or may not be right, though there's at least a little more credence lended to the fact that it's wrong with the elusive nature of the Tarrasques of Falx. |
