10-06-04, 10:02 AM I have to be the ultimate noob!!!

I just recently picked up a fantasybook on the Forgotten Realms, now I'm curious as how to play. Because of my pathetic location I can't find any rulebooks or instructions at all.

Will anyone please help me? My AIM name is magicWizardLink and I'd prefer to use AIM, but if you want PM me or post here some basic rules or something.

10-06-04, 01:21 PM you do realise that Forgotten Realms is a dungeons and dragons role playing game?

you need to have the D&D core rule books (players guide, dungeon masters guide and monster manual) or you can look here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/20040121a) for the free open game license, which is basicly the rules with no pictures or flavor

second, forgotten realms is a setting in which to play the game. i would recomend reading a few of the novels (some are good, some not so good, depends on personal preference) learning the D&D rules, and then grabbing the campaign setting (D&D book with all the forgotten realms style info in it) and having a game with your mates

there are some free adventures you can download here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/oa/20030530b), and thats that

on a side note, a big trap noobs fall into on the boards is discussing novels. the powres at be decided this was a no-no, as lets not go there. you can mention them as soruces of info, but not discuss them. there is a sticky thread about this on the main forgotten realms board. or click here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=264983)

10-06-04, 01:31 PM there are some great forgotten realms games out there as well

Baldurs gate series : there was a PC and console version, radically different
Icewind dale : as far as I know, pc only, similar to Baldurs gate
Ruins o Myt Drannor: personally didn't like it, PC only
Neverwinter nights: includes an option to design your own games as well, pc only
and a new one call Demon Stone for consoles is just out as well

There are alot of old games as well, whos names i can't remember of the top of my head, and might not run nicley on new PC's anyway

oh, and eye of the beholder, you can get that on the gameboy, cos I got it!

10-07-04, 12:29 PM I can't afford the Guides so, I can't learn how to play like that, and I searched on www.wizards.com for DnD and didn't find anything, if anyone has AIM who can explain it a little or donate a manual, I'd greatly appreciate it.

If you are trying to actually play the game, you really want to buy the main 3 books. Even after you learn the ropes of the game, you will still need the role books for reference. No one can really memorize all the rule books and not need them anymore. Try looking on ebay for cheap books. You might be able to buy some 3.0E books cheap.

10-08-04, 10:36 AM As a new player, all you really need is a game master and a group of fellow players.
A good DM should be able to explain the basics of the game before you buy any book.
And if there is a book you might need later to learn more, the Player's Handbook should be enough.
Also, for real newbies, the basic rules box is really helpful, as it doesnt immerge themn in too much rules or pages. The set contains ready made characters, blank sheets and simple (but clear) explanations about the basic system (races, classes, abilities, skills, combat, saving throws, spells, etc).

They forgot to say that your and your soul are trapped now in this fantastic world. You are trappend forever no matter what are you trying to do.

DONATE A MANUAL?! AT THIRTY FIVE DOLLARS A CRACK? :OMG! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Seriously though. You can't just buy a book and say your playing... you need to get together with some gaming geeks and sit down and play. Then, if you like it, (and I pray you don't have a really stupid group or lame GM or both) buy a Player's handbook. DnD DEFINATELY isn't something you can just pick up the books never having played before and try to be a dungeon master. I know people that've been playing this game in excess of twenty years that don't have what it takes to be good DM's.
