I was digging around on the internet in an attempt to figure out what the current year is in Forgotten Realms. In doing so, I discovered that the names of the Faerunian years stretch out all the way to the year 1600. This really surprised me, because I'm guessing they don't have over 200 years of realmslore just sitting around in a vault somewhere (that would be over 1,000 years of future publications and I just don't think Wizards is that far sighted in its business plans). Still, it made me wonder if there were any publications out there that talk about these future years of Faerun. I'm also curious to know why the timelines stop at 1600? Is something supposed to happen in 1600? Anyone who knows anything about this, I'd appreciate it if you could drop me a line. Thanks.

nothing genuine, you see those year names are just year names and may or may not have any bearing, the roll of years was mostly designed by some seerer with alaundo plugging in a few that where missing IIRC. and while these names SOMETIMES have a relation to what goes on in the year it doesn't always (there's no garentee for example of ANY events involving elves in DR 1375. mind you given the last mythal trilogy it no doubt refers to the reconstruction of myth drannor and reeistablishment of other scattered elf holds) you just can't really tell, for exactly DR 1358, the time of troubles was known as "the year of shadows" IIRC, yet there wasn't anything related to shadows going on that year as far as I can tell \.
mind you WOTC seems particularly eager to use the roll of years as a guideline for future events. however this doesn't mean a heck of a lot, as sometimes the exact meaning of em may be vague, and in the case of the year of lighting storms we have several events that seem to be the qualifier for the year's name.

The Roll of Years was compiled several years ago by Steven Schend and the other 'Candlekeep Sages'. The year names refer to prophecies made by Augathra, Alaundo and others, not to specific events known either to the people of Toril or, except piecemeal and vaguely, to the our-world authors. We don't know how far Wizards has planned out the official timeline, but it won't be beyond several years in any detail.

The only source set in advance of the 'current' timeline is the Double Diamond Triangle Saga, whose events are now deemed apocryphal. Ed Greenwood has posted his own thoughts on what the Realms' future may hold at Candlekeep.com.

Steven Schend quoted in the REALMS-L FAQ:Why did we stop at -700 and 1600? Well, two reasons. A) 2300 years names is more than enough grist for the creative mills of DMs out there. and B) If we added more at either end of that spectrum, they're either so far before or after current campaigns that they're less and less useful.

An obvious one here is the actions of the Shadowmasters -- the Malaugrym -- as seen in the Shadow of the Avatar novels.

-Well, if you never found it, the current year is 1374 DR- Year of the Lightning Storms. The year had it's prophecy fufilled, as magical lightning storms did plague parts of the Realms, and culminated in a RSE (Realms-Shaking Event).

-As far as I know, the furthest that we readers have seen ahead has been 1380 DR.

-Um...I believe that the Geonomicon website (Where the Grand history of the Realms can be found) has the Roll of Years.

As one of said sages, we were asked to compile all the known year names to date at that point and just come up with as many cool names as we could. Between us, we came up with so many names that Steven and folks liked that he went further in the future and the past then originally intended. Steven organized the names. Some of it was clearly done with some careful thought, while others I think we're simply place in one place or another. Basically, the intent was to give DMs, players, and designers something to work with and answer all the fans who'd been clamoring for a complete list.

Wait, what realms shaking event was this? Have I missed a trilogy? Is it like the weather channels 'StormWatch' but set in Faerun?

"Well, Bob, Here in neverwinter people are getting ready for yet another big storm. We'll check in more, but, for now its just lots of sandbags."

-Read the novel Blackstaff for full details. I don't want to spoil anything by mentioning the ultimate climax. It's best to just read the book, and then at the end, when it happens, go, "Whoa..."

Ohh. No wonder. If it didn't get a fully trilogy I'm not suprised I missed it. I'm so used to year-events being in those.

Blackstaff you say? Alright. Will do.

what happen in year one? (what event was then that people counted years from that moment on or restarted counting, that's how you take it)

-The Standingstone was erected by the Dalesfolk and the Elves of Cormanthyr. It has recently been destroyed, by Sarya Dlardrageth and her son, in DR 1374.

I imagine that it will be raised anew following the victory in myth drannor as a sign of a continued desire to live in peace.
