I am considering stocking up on some Forgotten Realms books and attempting to run some sort of campaign with them. Being as I have yet to do this, I would like some advice on what to get beyond the base setting (which I have). Also I would appreciate any advice that could be given as to avoiding common issues and pitfalls in running such a campaign. I've heard about issues with high level characters and I keep hearing about some guy named Drizzt and his "clones". I've never read any of the novels so maybe that's my problem, still I'd like any help that folks are willing to provide.

Since you have the FRCS and want to branch out, I assume you do like it, which is good, because it ain't worth getting into a setting you're ambivalent about. So what do you like about it? With Realms sources running into the mid-hundreds, the 'best' books depend on what you want to know about.

I repeat the advice I gave yesterday about reading the 1987 Forgotten Realms Campaign Set and Swords of Eveningstar to get to the heart of this world. Start with a small town or village, agents of conflicting power groups, and a dungeon setting like the excellent FRQ1 Haunted Halls of Eveningstar (http://paizo.com/store/brand/forgottenRealms/roleplayingGames/2ndEdition/v5748btpy7ml7) (though it would need to be converted to 3E).

The Realms is a big setting: many ideas, organizations, histories, many folk common and exalted, ordinary and heroic and villainous. Your PCs aren't the only heroes on the continent. There's an online canard, almost never based on experience, that the established NPCs overshadow PCs in the Realms, but it would ever occur to you if you hadn't read it. Drizzt Do'Urden is the very popular lead protagonist of Bob Salvatore's novels, which are the best-selling Realms books. Unless your players have read these and yearn to copy him, you don't need to even think about him if you don't want to.
