Howdy:) . I used to DM forgotten realms campaigns back under 1st and 2nd ed. I been DMing other campaign settings and other RPG's under 3.0 and 3.5. I think my players are ready to give FR another try (been playing with the same group for about 10 years now... ug I suddenly feel old).

I have the FRCS, magic of FR, monsters of FR and waterdeep, got the updates for them to.

I have lots of the 2nd ed stuff which I can reference.

I don't read the novels so don't know whats in them.

After going over all this stuff I have come up with a couple questions I can't find answers for and hope someone can help or point me in the right direction:) .

In Volo's guide to the North and the North boxed set it mentions some towns that didn't make it into the 3rd ed campaign book.

Port llast and Leilon. After reading about tilverton then reading someones post about how Nesme was destroyed in some book and how it was probably canon... I just want to check and make sure these two places are still there. Leilon was just above waterdeep past the marsh and port Llast was north of the city of neverwinter. Since I didn't see them on the map then didn't see info on nesme either its got me wondering about their continued welfare.

Are those two towns still there?

Another question regards the deity Leira. She was the (CN) diety of illusionists, illusions and deception. Her followers could be almost any alignment with quite a few being CG and CN. We had a lot of fun with this deity back in 1st and 2nd ed. Clerics of the deity couldn't tell the truth, relished in deception... needless to say we had a lot of specialty priests in my campaigns that followed this deity. She also seemed real popular with halfling PC's. There was a bit written somewhere that khelban hired specialty priests of leira exclusively to work in the adventurers information office and I ran with that idea.

Anyway

It was written somewhere that Liira killed her during the time of troubles because their names were confusingly similar but then in faiths and avatars it says cyric did it. It also says he took over her portfolio and that her clerics and followers were not aware of the change over. This kind of complicates things as I have trouble seeing N or CG beings following cyric.

Since I saw nothing about this deity in FRCS I am assuming shes dead and isn't coming back? I know I can just use my DM powers and go "poof" and have her available for my campaign but I am wondering what her "official" status is. I read the Bane/xvym (sp) thing and bane coming back but I am guessing something similar hasn't happened for leira?

Thanks for any help:)

-Cyric did in fact killed Leira, and subsume her portfolio. Lliira had nothing to do with anything in that situation.

JohnJohn, why do you want to use the latest official timeline at all?

JohnJohn, why do you want to use the latest official timeline at all?

I don't know I guess I feel obligated to. I had some problems way back when...

Sembia was set aside so DMs could place their own campaigns there but that didn't last long. Then the whole time of troubles thing and we had to retroactively bring in the outcomes of all that into our campaigns.

DM: You run into some clerics of Bane
Players: Bane's dead you must mean cyrics..

Our waukeen cleric PC's had some real problems as did the Leirans. On top of that we had different editions of D&D to change through. The more we diverged from the standard timeline the harder it was to bring new stuff in and make it fit.

I am just trying to get some common ground before I start diverging. I am about to give up on it though as I was thinking of starting in the dalelands with lvl 1's but with the shadowdale module and its effects on the area (if any), the drow in myth drannor (is it the year of risen elfkin about now?) and (at least from what I have read on message boards) some elvish crusade going on around there ...

I am thinking of ditching the timeline and/or starting in "the north" or "western heartlands" till I get a better feel for things. I have never done anything in the western heartlands before so maybe alls for the best.

Thanks for the replies:)

Neither Wizards or your players should be dictating the setting to you, and you're asking for trouble if you don't let the players know that. They should also know that blindly insisting on the literal letter of the Realms is against the spirit of the Realms.

I think the best common ground is the 1357 DR setting of the Old Grey Box. If you don't want the hassle of an official timeline, gods you like going away, worrying whether towns have been destroyed, reading dozens of novels and adventures -- you don't need it.

Shadowdale: The Scouring of the Land shouldn't discourage you from your Dales campaign: in fact, its components can be repurposed without using the adventure's events. For the Western Heartlands concept, just use the time Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast is set (mid-1360s DR) for convenience.

Thanks again:)

Yep I found all my old volo's guides and read through em a couple weeks ago. They are what got me reinterested in the setting again. The one on the sword coast got me thinking about the western heartlands. The 2nd ed boxed set also had a very good map covering much of that area in some detail as well. Its a good thing I had those old maps laminated way back when:)

I got two weeks before we are starting up again so now I just gotta find a quiet little village somewhere... volo showed quite a few of em.... somewhere off the beaten track...

come up with a ruin nearby....

This is going to be fun:)
