The description of the astral plane says that it is " Timeless. Age, hunger, thirst, poison, and natural healing don’t function in the Astral Plane, though they resume functioning when the traveler leaves the Astral Plane."

Does this also mean that in the astral plane there is no rest and the spells have an infinite duration? Ot the timelessness only apply to the listed things?

Spells can not have inifinite duration. I would figure that you could sleep if you absolutely want to. Elves could go into reverie just for the sake of rememorizing spells.

-I'm a little rusty here, but...

Aren't you merely a "projection" in the Astral Plane? Meaning, you are not physically there, but your mind is. Your body is somewhere else, right? Hence, the silver cord connecting you to your body and everything. So, when they say you don't have to sleep/eat/etc., they're really just saying that your projection doesn't have to. Your physical body is somewhere, in a comatose state.

You!! You're back, eh?

That's absolutely right. I can't believe I didn't realize that.

Thats actually not the case, if you travel to the astral plane via plane shift, your body and everything goes with you. If you go by the astral projection spell a reasonable fascimile of you or shade so to speak goes to the astral plane. Any damage including death that this projection takes is taken on your sleeping body. What the use of this projection is then? I don't know probably none.

-Yep, I said that I am back, but in a limited manner for now.

-As for what Clobering said...Very true. How could there be Githyanki and Githzeri cities on the astral if their physical bodies weren't there? Duh. Like I said, I'm a little rusty on my planar traveling.

Actually, if you transit into the Astral via Astral Projection, you create an astral version of yourself and all your equipment. However, both you and this stuff are merely astral versions of yourself. Damage to your astral form does not damage your resting physical body, and if killed, the astral form dissipates and you wake up back on the material (or wherever you cast the spell). The same rules apply to your astrally projected equipment.

Astral projection is really quite a neat spell, actually, as the only ways that you can ever truly be hurt while astrally projecting are if your silver cord is cut (and barring gith silver swords or astral dreadnoughts, this is rather difficult to accomplish), or if your resting physical body back on the prime is killed, in which case.... oops.

Just don't let that surrogate astral body be petrified. ;)

And to answer the general question:

You still need to rest to regain spells, and spells have their normal duration on the Astral despite the plane's removal from the normal flow of time (or more appropriately, removal from the ravages of time).

It's a fun plane, the petrified islands of long-dead gods are a nice thing to visit, but the githyanki don't play well with others. And as always, the retroactive aging upon leaving the Astral can be awkward if you lose track of how long you stay on the plane ;)
