I am trying to come up with a scenario in case of the event of a total player kill. After reading the afterlife paragraphs in FRCS (page 258), I was thinking of letting the players encounter a servant of one the gods they worship on the fugue plane after they all die. He will tell them that a valuable soul has been taken by a group of raiding tanar'ri demons on their way back from the city of judgment. He offers to instruct a cleric follower back on faerun to bring them back from the dead if they manage to follow the demons through their portal, and retrieve this soul from the abyss.

I would like to ask all persons versed in the lore of the forgotten realms if such a thing is possible and/or plausible according to the rules? If it is, would the players arrive on the fugue plane with all their weapons, armor, equipment, etc.?

I don't think its very traditional, To get an idea of what the Fugue plane is like for petitioner's I would read the series of Novels that include the book The Trial of Cyric the Mad.

Otherwise, I think your suggestion is fantastic, and very clever. Let the players enjoy it and go with it.

I think the players would arrive on the Fugue Plane as they appeared in Faerūn (same race, class levels, etc.) but with no gear, no spells left in memory, and most importantly for wizards, no spellbook. The servant of the god that will meet them could give them some gear, however, and perhaps a spellbook that the wizard could attempt to decipher for spells...

Remember that this would happen BEFORE they get judged by Kelemvor, so they would be essentially the same as in they were in Faerūn (after they are judged by Kelemvor, they become petitioners for their respective deity, so they are transformed to the appropriate form of creature, as per the PGtoF planar domain entries and the rules outlined in the Fiend Folio). I would rule that the souls in the Fugue Plane lose all class-related HD, feats and skill points (otherwise the high-level folk who die would rule over the weak commoner souls... not a pretty scenario), that these abilities are "suppressed" by some property of that plane. The servant of that god could cast a long, complicated, high-level spell that would allow them the use of their former abilities FOR A SET DURATION... (this would mean that the PCs are on the clock, and that any delay would make them lose all abilities, and that they would be stuck in the lower planes forever... kind of a good suspense-builder don't you think? ;) )

Thanks:)! I'll see if I can get my hands on a copy of that book.

Excellent idea! The deity, by the hands of his servant, will weave a powerful spell around the PCs, restoring their abilities, and hiding them from the prying eyes of Kelemvor. Celestial armor and holy arms will be bestowed upon them (what the hell, it's only for this session, and they are hunting demons:D). You have exactly ONE hour before the spell runs out, the gate closes and you are ALL trapped in the abyss for eternity! Now be on your way. BE ON YOUR WAY I SAY!

I am totally seeing this :ayyyy!:
