| Sparhawk4206-23-06, 04:09 PM | Hello all, I had an idea and wanted to get some feedback on what others think of it. I was thinking it would be very handy to have a generator that could determine traveling distance and times between two points. Such as how far apart is Baldur's Gate from Waterdeep and how long it would take to get there if the most common roads are taken. Perhaps you could type in Baldur's Gate as a starting point and Waterdeep as the destination and then choose type of travel, say light horse, and then it would tell you the distance and time of travel. Now I'm sure I'm not the first person to think something like this would be useful, I was just doing some work on a campaign and the idea came to me and I thought I'd throw it around on the forums. Heck, maybe something like this already exists and if it does I would appreciate if someone would direct me to its location. I imagine such a program would be a lot of work for someone to make but I don't really know as I'm not skilled with program building and such. Anyway, just an idea to chat about! :) |

| RedUncle06-25-06, 12:35 PM | I love the idea!! ... I don't think anything like that exists though... so far, I've been calculating it manually ---- and eventually memorizing the distances / times... when I first started using a XP/CR/EL calculator thingy from the internet, I was amazed and relieved!! ... I'd love to know how long it would take to walk from Waterdeep to Neverwinter, for example --- it could be like an interactive map!! outstanding... imagine the graphic interface ----- drag and drop start point ---- and indicate destination ------ then proceed to select mode of transport... calculating..... 9.4 days!! (random example) ------ cool idea man! |
| Sparhawk4206-25-06, 07:30 PM | Thanks for the feedback RedUncle! :) I haven’t heard of any program like this either. I too just calculate the distances and times manually and I think it would be very handy to have an application like this. Too bad I don't have the know how to make it myself. Anyway, anyone else have any comments? |

| Wenin06-27-06, 03:01 PM | It would take a pretty beefy program to calculate this kind of thing on the fly. It would have to be on the scale of Mapquest. =) Where the program would know all the different roads within the realms. Where no road exists, it would have to know what kind of terrain exists between two known points. Wow that would be a pretty neat program. Otherwise, you'd just create a distance/travel time chart like you see on road maps. All the calculations would have to be done before hand, and only involve significant locations. |
| Kagan Clearwater06-27-06, 04:12 PM | i know it's not a program but I have made a chart out of the information provided in the PH for easier reading. Check out the link below: http://www.knoxgamers.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/916/an/0/page/0#Post916 take care, Kagan Clearwater |
| Arkayne_Blastum06-27-06, 05:11 PM | I downloaded something like this at Candlekeep.com quite a while ago - as long as you tell it the distance and terrain, it calculates the travel time. I use it with CC2 and FR Atlas all the time. I assume you can still get it at the Candlekeep site? |
| Sparhawk4206-27-06, 06:25 PM | Thank you to Kagan for the link and to what Arkayne said, there is a program there called a Travel Calculator but it doesn't quite do what I was proposing in my first post. But it is definitely a useful start! :) Oh and I realize it would have to be a pretty big program, I just thought it sounded like a good and useful idea. I'm not really suggesting that anyone go out and make a program like this (although that would be great :) ). I just wanted to get some other peoples comments on the idea. |
