Hi,

I've recently begun a campaign in the Eastern Region of Thesk. I've had my players captured by a Thayan Slaver assisted by a band of Blood Orcs. I'm creating a Blood Orc Seargent(Brb2) and I noticed something strange about the stats for the Blood Orc offered on page 60-61 of The Unapproachable East.

The Base Attack bonus is listed as +4, and the Orc as a STR 17, meaning a +3 STR Bonus. This adjusts the melee attack bonus to +4. In the regular attack, the attack bonus is listed as expected, +4; but in the Full Attack, it's listed as +3??? Does anyone know why? I can't see it.

The strangeness doesn't stop there, however. The damage for the Heavy Flail it wields is 1d10 +4. Where do they get +4? +3 for STR dmg, but the orc doesn't have Weapon Specialization or anything. Are these just mistakes in the book?

Thanks,
Chris

Not sure about the first, but is the orc using the flail two handed?

I think that the first is just a typo (though i am not sure since i haven't got the book).

As for the second issue: a heavy flail is a large weapon and therefore must be used with two hands if the wielder is medium size,
according to the rules any weapon that is wielded two-handed may add one and a half the wielders strength instead of the basic str modifier.
if say you were a 1st level human barbarian with 18 str (and therefore a +4 modifier) and wielding a greatsword (or any other weapon twohanded) he can add a +6 damage modifier (4*1,5 = +6).
in the orcs case it's 3*1,5 = +4 (rounded down)

The UAE says, that the base attack bonus is +1 and the grapple bonus is +4.

Ahh, I forgot about Medium Sized creatures and Large weapons. Thanks for pointing that out to me again.

As to the issue of the grapple bonus, I understand that. The two lines in question read:
Attack: Heavy Flail +4 melee; or javelin +1 ranged
Full Attack: Heavy Flail +3 melee; or javelin +1 ranged
Damage: Heavy Flail 1d10+4/19-20; javelin 1d6+3

Thanks!
