Right below the Savage Frontier. West of Dambrath. Above the Shaar. East of Mulhorand. These places are labeled "Unclaimed Territory". Is this to say that they are undiscovered (and therefore open-bait for monster-thirsty characters, or this this to say that they are simply lacking any political power like a thousand thorps?

Yup, this one it is I guess, but your description is rather vague.

In My book it said that area's marked in red are disputed territory which most likley means that there are power struggles for this territory going on. Its not that they are unclaimed or undiscovered, it just means that no ruling nation has really seized control of it yet. At least im prety sure thats what it means.

That's the disputed territories. He's talking about the aread with no listed region name that seem to connect the areas not well fleshed out (travelling to chult over land, for instance, takes you through alot of these). Technically what they are are areas that greenwood drew in, but then didn't do anything with. AS to ones game, I'd say that they are simply outlying regions of the kingdoms next to them, that haven't become economically important enough to fight over (and thus claim).

Ok thanks willie, wasnt sure what he referred to as im without my FR book or maps right now as our current DM is using them to run his FR campaign. As to the spaces between borders, there are usally a reason no one has claimed them on a world as heavilly populated a Faerun. Usually the land is fertile, no resources, too many dangerous creatures populating it that cannot be easilly taken care of (i.e. Dragons) or some other reason. Some lands may have certain purposes, a lone tower may not draw much attention and a wizard can often traffic his own goods in magically from afar.

I could be wrong here but even in todays world there is space thats not being used by anyone simply because its too hard to settle there and use the land.

But of course a clever PC can claim and use the land if his powert is great enough and he has powerful allies cant he?
