I have the basic bones of a story worked out (in excavating larger dungeons for castle, workers uncovered a portal, which was found to link to a large, relatively safe cavern in the underdark with large amounts of valuable ore and/or gems. Expedition was sent out, and a settlement was established. For some reason, the portal stopped functioning, leaving the settlers with limited supplies of food, and, more importantly, water. The PCs were under the death penalty, but were spared in return for helping the settlement). Are there any suggestions you have? I've never run a campaign like this before, is there anything i need to remember? Are there any problems with my backstory? Is there anything else i need to know? |

You could change some of its features (i.e. the type of valuable ore explored) to best suit in your campaign. You should remember that travel in the Underdark is very difficult, with almost no straight paths and with countless twisted tunnels. So its very likely that the jorney to the mine will took several days (probably weeks) to achieve the goal. You should consider to put the above mentioned mines in the Upperdark instead of Lowerdark. And remember to make the PCs carry with them large amounts of food and water. Hope it helps :) |

It sounds to me like a great challenge and a great backstory for a game. Just make sure to keep the monsters they face in line with their level. |
