Maybe I am to Old school but I look at Undermountain an I see Tomb of Horrors on a grand scale the ECL seem's off, Ok we are only on level one and maybe I should tone down my thinking. I did some play testing using PCs 3-5 lv and used only mosters that were on the encounter list for level one and the origanal setting book as well as the new updates, we had a good group of five players a Dwarf fighter (4), A half-elf Ranger (4), a Human Sorcerer (5) a halfling Rouge (4) & a Elf Priest (5). Three hour of game play later the Dwarf and halfling were dead and within the last two hours all but one PC still lived. All the Players had atlease 2-5 years of experince with the game rules and or experince, dice rolls seemed to be on there side for the most part. Two weeks later we tried it again PCs were 8-10 lv same group they lost the Dwarf again but he did take on a group of four trolls and took three down before he fell himself and had many of bad dice rolls, everone agread the ECL of level one was ment for players of atleast 8-10 as the DM agreed. We played two more game using anouther group and a New DM this time I played the Dwarf the low level game we all died the DM randomly rolled 3 Umber Hulks as a random attracted encounter as we were finishing up with a group of 12 Bugbears...Ouch! The Higher lv game we lost two PCs this time The Sorcerer and the Ranger thanks to one of the new updated rooms the Grim Statue the guys were both suckers for the Succubus but as I undersand they died with smiles on there faces... As a final thought Undermountain is still as deadly as it alway has been and there are plenty of losst treasures for those brave foolharty adventures to find if the grim reaper does not find them first...I look forward to seeing more updates soon. |

From memory there was at least one Lich living on level 1 in the old 2ed Undermoutain bxset. One of the reasons why Undermoutain is such a death trap is that an adventuring party will never no whether the next room they enter will contain a kobold or a demilich! and Im sure thats just how Halaster likes it |
