| creepy drifter04-19-06, 10:47 PM | I'm a 1st Edition FR player who is now finally getting around to playing in the 3.5 FR environment again. Hooray! My question to you FR savants is this: What methodology is used to determine when the FR year changes in both the authored novels and the 3.5 D&D FR playing sourcebooks? For example, I believe (I hope) it is 1373 - Year of the Rogue Dragons. But since I do not read the novels, I never knew when the year "officially" switched from 1372 to 1373. I guess I am also looking for how/when the year switches get officially announced .. and where you can find WotC FR recaps of each of the years. ******* I realize this may all be a lot to ask, but I'm sure there are others like me out there who are wondering the same. :D As I would like my D&D FR gaming world to stay in synch with the official advancement of the WotC FR canon gaming world. Thank you! |
| Dark Wizard04-19-06, 11:30 PM | I believe WotC's official policy is a 5 for 2 ratio. Every 5 real years sees the Realms years progressed by approximately 2 years. For instance, the FRCS was released sometime around 2001, it was 1372 DR then. It is now 2006, the DR year is officially 1374. The authors of both novels and sourcebooks seem to try to keep to this, I guess the company gives assignments and contracts based on this rough progression. |
| Old Sage04-19-06, 11:39 PM | See pg. 260 of the FRCS for the real-world time to Realms time conversion method. The current year is 1374 DR -- Year of Lightning Storms. Rich Baker's "Last Mythal" books are carrying the timeline forward. Remember also that we are really only made aware of some of the events and happens in the Realms for a particular year. What we read in the FR novels and learn through the source material in the various 3e/3.5e accessories aren't always the most important, or only, events occuring for that year in the Realms. It's a matter of perspective. |
| creepy drifter04-20-06, 12:06 AM | Thank You, Dark Wizard and Old Sage. :) Ah yes, I just read that Pg. 260 sidebar. I can't believed I missed that! Still so, that would be tremendously great feature for the WotC FR web site to have some sort of "current year indicator" splashed somewhere on the front page. Maybe even be able to click on it to get a status update on the current FR year and the timeline events for both the novels and the game sourcebooks. Does anybody have enough clout to present an idea like this to the WotC FR web site crew? I'm sure one of you savvy types might be able to better present it than me. :) |

| Alac Luin04-20-06, 11:23 AM | I've been hopeing for years that accesories would have one line in the front saying which year it is Faerun time. creepy drifter: your showing your age with that sleestack reference in your sig ;) |
| Demetrios04-20-06, 03:58 PM | I've been hopeing for years that accesories would have one line in the front saying which year it is Faerun time. Champions of Valor did, but Power of Faerun didn't follow suit... |
| creepy drifter04-20-06, 06:46 PM | Seems like there is some interest in my idea. Unless someone else wants to run with it, does anyone have any idea who I should contact at WotC to see if such a simple, but informative concept could be added to their FR web site splash page? thanks! |
| Old Sage04-20-06, 08:51 PM | You could try emailing WotC's customer service branch... I just don't have a valid email address here ATM, unless another poster can provide you with it. |
| BrianCritchley04-20-06, 08:59 PM | Champions of Valor did, but Power of Faerun didn't follow suit... on the other hand it provided some timelines right up to an exact DATE so... |

To the OP, try this link: http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=aboutus/contactus And I totally agree with including the FR date/timeline, and bringing back the Waterdeep weather forecast on the FR web page.
