I can't always check in here, have to work, etc...and I get lost when threads receive dozens of replies, anyway...here's an update on the situation.

To make a long story short...
I went to a local scriptorium and got some copies of the local law books and convinced my CG companions to go back with me to the temple of the Triad. The high priest reviewed the law books and found something I had missed. The prisoners have visitation rights. We went back and managed to arrange an audience with the head magistrate who insisted we meet him in his residence. We were going to demand a visit of our friends when the magistrate pops out of the door and he is surrounded by minions. He had a large medallion bearing the unholy symbol of Bane, two subordinate clerics, 4 low level fighters, a dozen or so zombies and skeletons; we managed to take out all of those minions pretty quickly and even my 1st level turn ability took care of the minor undead. The magistrate (cleric of Bane) must have used some sort of teleportation since he got out on time. Some time later we encountered much more powerful adversaries; 4 vampires, probably multiclass fighters and rogues. I don't know for sure. We fought them as best as we could but we were injured from the previous fight a few hours ago and they were quite powerful and were draining us. I thought we were going to die or worse so I clasped the special holy symbol granted to me by Torm and I prayed. I blacked out and my companions and I woke up back in the Temple of the Triad, fully healed. I guess my god favours me (and my companions). Well there is no more hesitation on my part, only precaution. I have spoken with the high priest and he made it clear that we have to root out this evil and rescue our companions. We are obviously up against a powerful foe. The involvement of powerful undead and possibly some sort of thieves guild or assassins. We are discussing the strategy of how to approach this. The temple has been buffing us up with holy water, healing potions and other items. I think if we had the party of 6 with our cleric we would have a fighting chance but with three players against what seems to be a very large force arrayed against us (high level clerics, vampire fighters and rogues and tons of other minions). It doesn't look good and I can't always rely on my god to whisk me and my companions away when I wish it. The up and coming battle will be a real trial for us and it might mean our deaths. I still don't know what happened to our companions, perhaps they have escaped. I do know they are alive via a commune spell cast by the priest of Tyr. Any advice on how to go about this possible ultimate adventure and battle?

This is D&D. No battle is truly hopeless as long as your DM is being fair and your not being dumb.

Personally I would set your priority on finding your companions. Heavily equip with anti=undead spells. Use stealth and subterfuge to gain access and find your companions. Don't rush the enemy head-on since its very likely you will lose...save that for when your group is again full strength. Don't be afraid to hit and run and do it again...every undead you take out is one less you have to face later. Since your the one who is on the offensive remember the enemy can only wait for you to make the first move...they can only react to what you do. So try to control when and where you fight to your best advantage.

A couple of suggestions;

Ask the priests of Tyr/Torm/Ilmater for suggestions/assistance - keeps it in-game for the DM to provide a possible solution and pertinant information.

Hire mercenaries to bolster your numbers, so you can hold your own against the minions in the final assault - might cost you though. Maybe martial clerics can be hired or persuaded from the temple or other good-aligned temples nearby? Or perhaps a suitable group of monster hunters (equivalent to the Order of Illumination) is nearby and can be persuaded to help? Do some legwork and find out! :)

Get good intelligence on their lair(s) and minions and fight them on your own terms - ambushes on their allies, use of hit and run tactics as already suggested, eliminating reserve locations that the vampires and the Banites might have prepared, locating your allies, freeing any prisoners falsely accused (a grudge *can* be a good thing!), doing quests for scrolls of Daylight, lots of health potions, good preperation of "buff" spells to maximise strengths and minimise weaknesses, and a really, really, really intimidating bad ass weapon (or two)! :)

Hope this helps! :)

Congrats on uncovering the plot.

I'd suggest that you try to create a diversion, maybe gather up a horde of villagers if you can and hold a protest in the center of town (hopefully with the help of the church of the triad) Speak out against the corruption in the government, of the banites and the undead. Try and protect the people and try and make as big a distraction as you can.

While your doing that the sneakier members of your party can break into the prison and free your friends.

I'd also suggest sending letters to any near by (or far away, whatever, get word out) settlements, temples, villages, etc telling of the situation in the town. Spread word far and wide so that if you fall the fight doesn't stop with your death.

Once your party members are free they can meet you at the protest (probably after a stop by the temple of the triad, unless you got priests to come with you to the protest, then they might be able to take care of the characters right there)

This might not be the best idea, but it's what I've got off the top of my head ;)

Having a public protest also kinda forces the temple of the triads hand, if they don't show up and help protect the villagers they lose hella face (and well, they aren't doing a very good job if they let banites infiltrate the village, you might even want to detect evil at the temple of the triad to see if there are any plants there, never know if a banite got himself into the temple in disguise)

Oh, and all this has the added benifit of making the DM's life hell because figuring out reactions for these types of actions is pretty damned difficult ;)

By Jove, good play man!

I agree with the past few posts except possibly the hiring of mercenaries. Could be helpful, but the crux of the problem was ethics, not something mercenaries are renown for. :pint:

Here's my :twocents: Seriously think about contacting the church of The Morninglord. His priests like nothing better than putting a fluorescent boot in the butt of Mr.B. Heck, even Chautea and Selune could be helpful. Remember that nearly all of the good Gods respect a paladin, especially one who has followed his code even when it wasn't expediant to his goals. True honor has no alignment. I am (both)Chaotic(and) Good to the core:cip:, and I would be proud to aid in your cause. Just a little above the CR though.:D Tymora's blessing upon your venture.

Been away for a week or two, and I'm glad to see you found a way around this that did not jeopardize your paladin hood. :)

If the fight hasn't happened yet, good luck :)

The only advise I would have is find your friends first. ;)
