And was Vangerdahast ever converted for 3e? It says in Dragon Annual #5 says he was a lvl 18 Wizard. This same magazine said Alusair was lvl 20 fighter, so I dont think its a reliable source.

06-21-03, 11:10 PM Yeah but in the Return of the Archwizards, they made a big deal out of summoning him to fight the Shades. I think he said something along the lines of "let an old man rest in peace." It seemed like he was living somewhere other than Cormyr.

The exact details of Vagerdahast's location and recent activities haven't been revealed. Interested parties would do well to look at novels by a certain Ed in the recent future. Perhaps Elminster's Daughter will need a little help from the old Snoop? <hint, hint>

Vangerdahast has not been reliably (or completely) converted to 3rd Edition D&D. I'd personally place his level well above 18- in the low- to mid- 20s, but no higher- and consider whether recent events suggest that he might be a newly appointed Chosen of Mystra.

Vangerdahast did not step down as Royal Magician until after the events of The Siege, which is book II of the Return of the Archwizards trilogy. By his appearance in Realms of Shadow, he's already retired as Mage Royal, but his battle with Rivalen as part of the trilogy itself occurred during is tenure.

06-22-03, 03:35 AM If I remember correctly, Vangerdahast never had more than 15 levels in all 3 editions, right? That guy's the laziest mage in Faerun!!! :razz:

06-22-03, 03:42 AM Vangerdahast was level 15 in Hall of Heroes, and level 17 in Heroes' Lorebook. This was before the Cormyr Saga, or Return of the Archwizards, to take the level from that previous source as you will.

06-22-03, 02:25 PM I haven't read the Return of the Archwizards trilogy yet,but I can't respect Caladnei as the Royal Wizard of Cormyr.She only has 11 Sorcerer levels for crying out loud!For the supreme mage of a powerful kingdom such as Cormyr,I would expect someone with more magical power.She could make a great commander for the War Wizards,but Royal Wizard?

06-22-03, 04:32 PM Caladnei is certainly not the most capable or experienced mage in the kingdom, neither in terms of caster level nor by measure of total experience points. She's level 15, and there are a dozen or so wizards of that level or higher listed in Volo's Guide to Cormyr alone.

She is, however, Royal Magician and Court Wizard to the House Obarskyr, supreme commander of the War Wizards. The title doesn't reveal anything about magical aptitude; it's simply a position that denotes authority. Laspeera very clearly has more pure magical ability than Caladnei, but pure magic alone does not a Mage Royal make. I refer you to Thanderahast, third to hold that position, who took his post at the ripe old age of 16.

06-23-03, 08:41 AM Also, when one does not resort to metagaming, she is a trusted, proven apprentice to a man that has served the Obarskyrs for three Human generations now, through thick and thin, hard times and good. Considering the political turmoil, trust, dependability, and loyalty would also be very important factors in choosing the Court Mage. And since when is the most powerful mage in a realm necessarily part of the government/regime?

06-28-03, 07:29 PM You are correct ElGreco,I acknowledge your point,though such a prestigious title should come along with an amount of power to back it up.In a country like Sembia where money rules all I could see an 8th level Aristocrat in a similar position,but Cormyr is different.I think Vangerdahast was being a little bit irresponsible when he stepped down and announced Caladnei the Royal Magician.Thanderahast was forced in the position since his mentor(Amedahast?) died.Vangerdahast must have been very shocked about the death of Azoun III,his friend and king.Likewise her 4 Fighter levels show that she would be better as a battlefield commander.
