Of course, one could asusme there would be a Volo's Guide to Baldur's Gate I since there is a II There isn't one, except for the one that came with the puter game. But Ed's sourcebook was named after the BGII puter game and it was originally supposed to be Volo's Guide to the Lands of Intrigue. Steven's Candlekeep Collection, which is linked in my FAQ of Links, also shows this under Volo's Guide to the Lands of Intrigue. |
| bobsan10-14-05, 01:08 PM | Thanks Kuje. Now I can lay this matter to rest with my players. |
| bobsan10-14-05, 01:22 PM | BTW, where is it listed that it was to be titled Volo's Guide to the Lands of Intrigue? I went to the Candlekeep site and looked up the book but it mentions nothing about that title. It does state it was originally titled Volo's Guide to baldur's Gate I. Am I not looking in the right area? http://www.candlekeep.com/bookshelf/products/11626.htm |

| bobsan10-14-05, 02:36 PM | Another question, if one does not mind my asking. I noticed on the Candlekeep site that the book was originally titled Volo's Guide to Baldur's Gate. was there ever a printing with this name? And if so, was there perhaps different cover art for it? One of my players insists he's seen another Volo's Guide to Baldur's gate with different cover art before. A little part of me thinks i've seen the same. but it's been so long I don't really recall. |

I believe that the Volo's Guide to BG was in the games but as for TSR ever printing such a book, they never did. |
| bobsan10-14-05, 03:49 PM | Kuje, it was just brought to my attention that there may be an error in our conclusion. http://arsvictoria.com/Store/Product.asp?pid=790 What book is this? I'm not sure if it's the computer game sourcebook or an actual Volo's guide. THIS is the picture I remember seeing in a local bookstore one time. And now i'm baffled as to what it is for. |

And not because of the similarity between the two images. If you ever asked me about this before I brought up the subject, I would have mentioned a cover like this with green coloring to it, though a little hazy as to the image on the front. I shall email this company if possible and see just what they're advertising. It's WAY too familiar for me to dismiss as just a mere trumped up photo. I won't jump to the conclusion as to it's true nature, but I'll ask them and find out. |

Because as I said, the original Volo's Guide to BG is in the BG instruction manual. :) I'm looking right at it and it starts on page 35. I quote myself, "There isn't one, except for the one that came with the puter game." |

I quote myself, "There isn't one, except for the one that came with the puter game." THAT would be absolute and undeniable proof in and of itself. I too own the rulebook (Which sits several yards away out in my car) and thought that to be the only one (Save for that image of a green cover I recall seeing in a gaming store years ago). The cover is just too familiar and I just emailed the company in regards to this to see what they would say. But if you can get word from the source directly (A task for which I truly envy you for being able to do) then by all means please do. ^_^ I must say this little mystery adds a certain joy to this otherwise boring work day. |

Ed loves to talk to the fans. Head over to Candlekeep.com and have a chat with him. He has his own thread over there as do 10+ FR game designers and authors in the forums. |

| bobsan10-14-05, 04:47 PM | Just saw that. Thanks ^_^ also, I'll drop a line here once I hear back from the company who had the book. I asked for an ISBN number to see if it helps determine what it is. |

The art piece linked above (http://arsvictoria.com/Store/Product.asp?pid=790) is the prototype art for that cover. Oftimes websites will glom onto art from WotC's website and use it (not always with permission). If they're in a hurry, they'll end up with the prototype art, as in this case. Steven Who's seen enough prototype art to really appreciate the finished works all the better" |
| Gray Richardson10-15-05, 02:09 PM | The very ironic thing about Volo's Guide to Baldur's Gate II is that it doesn't actually visit Baldur's Gate. It details Athkatla and other places in the area but doesn't touch on Baldur's Gate at all. |

Steven Who's seen enough prototype art to really appreciate the finished works all the better" The thing is, I SWEAR I saw this book at my local gaming store a few years back. I remember this because it was in the front display with the magazines and not with the rest of the books. I looked at it and wonder if it had anything to do with the game, and if it didn't it was a co-incidence. This was BEFORE the release of BGII, but not far before. At one point I had tracked down 2 different TSR/WTC publication numbers for these books, too. I had them saved in a TXT file, which I am now attempting to locate. BTW, I am Bob's friend who originally brought this to his attention. |
| bobsan10-18-05, 02:46 PM | If you've got those #s, I'd like to see them myself. |
| Ran-san10-19-05, 01:48 PM | I'm looking. They might have been on the PC that died, as it was a while ago that I did this. |
| Berzerker_prime10-20-05, 10:04 AM | You two are driving me up the wall with this. You know that, right? Just checking... Berz. |
| bobsan10-21-05, 03:14 PM | Love the new Sig Sarah! ^_^ |
| Berzerker_prime10-21-05, 10:21 PM | Needed to be said. And as Nixon would say... "I wasn't even there!" Stupid mummy... Berz. |
