| Skink09-14-06, 01:20 PM | Is there any part in forgotten realms world where "voodoo" is practised? |
| Nickpire09-14-06, 04:13 PM | Apologies in advance to any and all practicioners if my ignorance of voodoo is insulting. I don't know of any specific location where 'voodoo' is practiced, though the concept is entirly possible to work into the setting. Perhaps shaman's in Chult or even as a new form of magic. It wouldn't be too difficult to come up with wonderous items resembling voodoo dolls and what not. To my knowledge, voodoo is a lot of spirit, or loa veneration, tweaking the Wu Jen or Shaman class might work well towards creating a voudonist. Modern voodoo seems heavily influenced by other religions as well, depicting Catholic Saints as loa so it's unlikely it found it's way intact into the setting. |
| Blackheart09-15-06, 02:55 AM | I'm no expert on voodoo, either, but I think Nickpire has come as close as anyone could to offering good advice. I would think Chult or some other place (such as Maztica, if you incorporate that place into your games) that has a religion mostly grounded on spirit worship or veneration of the multitudes of aspects of life would be a great region of origin for the faith, as such. Modern vodoun (sp?) is a mixture of Catholicism and traditional voodoo, and the loa are presented as more modern, if somewhat anomolous, figures sometimes to be equally feared and venerated. Maybe someone more knowledgable on the topic could offer more, though. |
| Halidan09-15-06, 09:23 AM | Again, I'm no expert in modern vodoo practices, but the best analogy to the Caribean that the FR has might be the Nelanther Isles - just off the coast of Claimshan, Amn & Tethyr. Besides pirates and lizardmen, there are no dominant cultures established in the Isles, so it would be ripe for locating a small group of vodoo practioners. Perhaps the are a remanent of the Shoon empire, whose religion and magic has changed over the years nto something that resembles vodoo. Just a thought |
