Waiting [Archive] - Wizards Community

07-31-06, 06:04 PM Ok, So, I've ordered my D&D PH and my Basic Game along with FRCS...I've never played though I'm somewhat familiar (not very familiar) is there anything I can find on the internet to read to hold me over until I get my stuff in? Basically, I'm asking if I can find something pretty close to the Player's Handbook to read until I get mine

download a copy of the SRD (system refrence document) from the wizards site. it might help you easy your pain of waiting.

07-31-06, 09:11 PM I love the Realms, really. As I have not played in it...I've read about 30 or so of the novels, and I have a list of 80+ I plan on reading within the year if I can help it.

I'll spend a few days getting familiar with the rules before I actually do anything but I'm sure I'll learn from doing mostly though. I know a few people I think that'd be willing to try it out also.

07-31-06, 09:12 PM ok you have the SRD which is great - it is the "rules of the game" but to really get the flavour of the realms go to the download section and get all the free 2e stuff about regions and such to get the flavour of Faerun as oppoesed to just any D&D world. there are also nearly 20 years of novels to read throught to "catch up" as well :D

Why is it that the Novel Guide doesn't have that one or that entire set listed? I found a list that seems to have them all, but I like the novel guide because its pretty easy to see whats available, but in the end, I plan on reading them all

08-01-06, 02:04 PM Darkwalker on the Moonshaes is the oldest published FR novel, though I'm sure that some of Ed Greenwood's FR stories found print in Dragon before that. The Moonshae Trilogy (Darkwalker on the Moonshaes, Black Wizards, and Darkwell) was reprinted recently (within the last five years, I believe) so finding them shouldn't be too hard.

On the other hand, some series have yet to be reprinted and are harder to find (The Dragonwall trilogy, and The Finder Stone trilogy, for example). I, for one, find it disappointing that some of this older Realms fiction is unavailable for new players to enjoy.

It is hard to point out any one series that a new FR reader should use as a "primer" to the Realms. And I suppose it depends on where and in what year your game takes place. Some events would be irrelevant to your character, based on geography, race or age. For example, a human in present Realms time (1372 DR) would have been only two (at minimum starting age) when the Time of Troubles happened and would have olny the vaugest of recollections about it, whereas an elf would have been 100.

It took me forever to find the Sembia Black Wolf book, everywhere I looked said it was out of print since like 2002 or something like that, well I've got to go...(I found it though, bought it from some library halfway across the country, w00t)

Dude, I can't find that book anywhere! What kind of store did you get it in? I've checked my local B&N(and they can't order it), Waldenbooks, and some p.o.s. used bookstore. I've read the first 3 books in the series and I own the rest, but I can't bring myself to read them out of order. :weep:

I found it on ebay after about a year of searching, I sent emails out to official D&D stores and they had said it was out of print, which was weird since its like the 4th in the set and none of the others are hard to find and I cant just skip it. It was overpriced but I was able to deal with it, PM me and I'll talk more about it and see what I can do to help

08-02-06, 06:54 AM Thanks, I'll make sure I read that oneBear in mind that the Moonshae trilogy wasn't written for the Realms, but worked into it (sadly replacing Ed's original, detailed archipelago) after the first draft of Darkwalker was done.
