Wanna read... [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm FR noob and I want to read books but there are so many of them and I don't with wich book to start.

Wich book is good to begin with reading FR?

02-24-07, 10:36 AM My first book was the Crystal Shard, and I was hooked after that. Elaine Cunnigham's Song and Sword books are good starts. I liked the recent Last Mythal and Year of Rogue Dragon trilogies. RAS's Cleric Quintet are some of my favorites. You could read Ed Greenwood's novels. I never liked his style but others do. Out of his books you could read City of Splendors or Cormyr.

02-24-07, 12:19 PM hmm well merrik placed some novels there - if you want to know some facts about the realms as a starter, read the "Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting" and the "Player's Guide to Faerun" as it upgrades the outdated rules of the FRCS to 3.5 but has not all the facts the CS provides.

I am new to the FR Novels myself, so i can just advise you to read the Return of the Archwizard or/and The Last Mythal Triology :) perhaps there is somebody who could point out a link where i could get a chronological order to all the novells that are out there ?
i loved the LM Triology but i was pretty disappointed that there were so many realm shaking events mentioned that happened before ^^ still the best story i read in a long while :)

now that you mentioned it forsome reason I assumed he meant novels. Besides the sourcebooks mentioned I would recommend Faith & Pantheons, Lords of Darkness, Races of faerun, Magic of Faerun, Lost Empires of faerun and a regional book if you plan to campaign there. There are some great old books from 1e or 2e as well.

02-24-07, 04:29 PM The Sembia series was written as an intro to the realms and even though the originals are out of print, they should be re-releasing them with fancy/shiny new covers. Otherwise I'd say the long outdated Harper series or the "Realms of..." Anthologies. Those would give you a good feel of what the realms are trult like, as well as introduce you to some of the power groups (Harpers, Zhents, Cult of the Dragon, Red Wizards etc)

-This is what I always recommend. And, after doing this, you'll have some back knowledge about Faerūn, and will be able to then choose novels with characters that already interest you, or place that already interest you, and so on...

02-27-07, 11:23 AM Someone an opinion on Lisa Smedmans Books about the Yuan-Ti? (can't remember their titles?)
I like her 'Sacrifice of the Widow' and I kinda like the Serpent Folks, would I be satisfied with her (hopefully from an evil perspective) stories?

We are not suppose to give opinions on novels here. I suggest you you go over to Candlekeep if you want a detailed discussion on the topics. I can tell you that I like her novels including her contribution to the Sembia series and the Drow series. I did like the Yuan-Ti trilogy and recommend it to you

I wasn't impressed with her as an author in the Shadowrun novels, so I haven't bothered to read any of her D&D stuff...
