Has anyone actually ran a war campaign? I was looking forward to making one for a few friends of mine, but I wanted some pointers from people who have been DMing longer then me. Is there anyone who can help me?

I DMed one a few years back but it was an epic campaign. I used the old 2d ed. rules from the Birthright campaign setting.
To be more of a help, I need to know more about your campaing:
1. levels, races, classes, regions, timeperiods, etc.
2. will the pc's be soldiers, officers, rulers, etc.
3. is this a single battle/short war campaign or a longer campaign based on multiple wars or expansion
4. who are the adversaries

Heroes of battle, a lot of work and players starting at first level. Great fun.

I use Fields of Blood: Book of War. Ebon Studios I think is the publisher. I also use some of the rules from Heroes of Battle. I like FOB a lot and my players love how seamlessly we can switch back and forth from mass to single combat. Heroes of Battle is a good scenario creator but does not have the full scale feel that I wanted. I also think Miniatures has rules for full scale battle but I am not positive about that. I don't use miniatures. Second Edition had Battlesystem rules which I never used but they seem ok from what I have seen, don't know how well it would work with the 3.5 rules though. Hope that helps.

-I agree with Ramar. I say this a lot, but it is very true- If we are going to help you, we're going to need a little bit more information...

I did this campaign a while back and I must say it was one of my most successful. In the monster manual for Faerun (the small skinny book) look up Gibberlings. It has a description of what's going on with that monster currently in the world, and for some reason something is driving them out from the underworld. I used that as the basis for my campaign.

My PC's were immediately under attack at the beginning of the game from Gibberlings. They all pulled together and survived (saving each other in a fight is a good way to get a group of strangers to stick together). The town that they were in though was destroyed... it was a small town. The survivors caravaned to a new town for a place of refuge. On the way, the caravan was attacked again, this time they noticed that the Gibberlings were being herded by a creature from the underdark.

Anyways, telling the whole story would get way too long, but there was going to be a massive rare eclipse causing almost complete darkness. This was going to be the time for the Underdark to infiltrate the surface and attack towns and cities since most wouldn't even see it coming. The PC's were the ones to find out and alert everyone, and they had to fight in almost pitch black against Drow, and other creatures you don't normally get to throw at your PC's. This was also tied in with a conspiracy in the city that they took the caravan to. Most of the towns leaders were Dopplegangers, and were slowly murdering people and assuming their form. The Dopplegangers had made a deal with some of the Drow and such so that they could rule that city, since Dopplegangers are too weak for a massive frontal attack.

So, during this 10-day of darkness, I just made my PC's fight numerous battles in a row, which they luckily survived. But because of the darkness, their group got separated, and had to find each other again. There is a lot more to add, but it became the ultimate fight of Good vs. Evil.
