Hi,

yes it is my first post, i hope it won't be locked :D. Probably it was in some topics...
Anyway, I was wandering is it profitable for wizards to produce Forgotten Realms animation or movies?
I think that there are thousands of fans who would like to see favorite FR book characters on tv or cinema screens.
My favorite is title of the post. I could only imagine it in anime (berserk, blood +, Hellsing). Imho japanies animation is the best, also you can see bad american? animation of Dragonlance movie, i it spoiled one of my favorite book . War of the spider queen could be 6 season (books) series with lets say 15 sequels (2 chapters per sequels) in each season.
I'm against FR movies because in the end they will be bad B category movies (imho).
Thanks for reading!:P

Well, drizzt live action fell through.

But no plans for a D&D Anime, sadly.

I think WotC could do really well with an animated film division. Put out animated DVD adaptations of the most popular D&D storylines. I know I'd buy 'em up, so long as the quality was there.

Go ahead and animate, I say, BUT PLEASE DEAR GODS DON'T USE THE 'ANIME' STYLE! I grew up on that stuff and am sick of it! (I actually lasted all the way from "Speed Racer" to "Dragonball Z" and the only reason I can think of for watching it that long was because of possibly some undiagnosed masochistic tendencies.) :yuck: :tantrum: :banghead:

Other styles I'd want left out are those of Leyfeldt (sp?) and MacFarlane. Why? Imagine a bull-necked Drizzt and his panther (can't spell it, won't try!) with a tail extending about ten miles and wrapping all over the scenery. If you've ever seen MacFarlane's Spiderman drawings, you'll know what I mean. The forced dynamics are ridiculous.

Unfortunately, I'm really not sure who I'd want as the pincipal artist. Pete Overstreet comes to mind, but I'm not familiar enough with many others to recommend or decry. I could really show my age and suggest that Boris Vallejo do the poster art, but after that I've got nothing. Just please (whimper) no 'anime'!:D

(I know, I know. 'Japanime' and 'Manga' are the same to me.)

I consider Slayers to be set in the Forgotten Realms.

Elminster should be drawn like Quaggmire, cause they basically act the same. Giddity, Giddity!

Well, it's not anime style (does it have to be?), but they've released the first animated adaptation of Dragonlance.

Might just be the fact that I'm on a 15 year old monitor, but it looked like standard Saturday morning artistry. Is it just my monitor, or did it look like they did CGI on the monsters and normal cel and ink animation on the characters?

Also, I never followed Dragonlance. Is the story this is based on any good? I may rent it yet...

-The Drizzt novels, starting with Homeland, have gotten adaptations as Graphic Novels, from the publishing company Devil's Due. The illustrations, in my opinion, are excellent. I suggest anyone who hasn't done so already check them out.

-Record of the Lodoss War seems like a cool anime that I've, unfortunatley, never gotten the opportunity to see. One of the few animes that I'll admit that I like, based on what I've seen and know of it. Then again, it was created before what I call the "crap line"- basically 99.9% of anime brought to the United States after 2000 or so is crap- so that doesn't surpise me.

There is no unique ANIME STYLE. Everybody is always referencing anime to mostly commercial releases (Full metal alchemist, Dragonball series...). What about not so commercial animes like Elfen Lied, Blood Trinity they have some respectness (quality, deep & serious story, god damn good animation...)

For those who watched many animes series and read War of the Spider Queen what do you think of the combination? Do you think that WotSQ deserves to be animated?

Many Many years ago when I was still a teenager, I saw Record of the Loddos War on late night Sci-fi tv one night. I was hooked and it was one of the first movies to get me into Anime.
Years later once i had a job and very little bills to pay i went on an Anime buying spree and got the boxed set for RotLW,
I don't know what i ever saw in that movie, it was so broring the second time i tried to watch it i couldn't get through the first disk of the boxed set.

It gets points for being a D&D like anime but it's not enough points for me to recomend anyone going out and getting the DVD's.

Read them, liked them. Too bad they had to leave so much out, as often happens. My only snicker was the depiction of Drizzt as a child. Looked like a cartoonish adult head on a weird body. Other children were drawn all right. I wonder why he deviated so much with Drizzt?

-Symbolism. Drizzt has an inflated sense of worth, and thus, an inflated head.

I imagine many of you have seen this short animated piece before, but if some fans like us can produce a quality short like this then I don't see why bigger comapanies can't do the same or better.

This may not be in the anime style but it's still very good.

Well here is Drizzt and the gang fully animated in "The Road to Mithral Hall" (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YVwVNbORAv0)

Hee hee, the way the wind suddenly blew through Drizzt's hair just before the teaser finale reminded me of the way they used to depict John Redcorn in "King of the Hill"...:D

I love anime, but I can't see it done with FR.

Dragonlance on the other hand, with it's romantic and angsty feel, would be perfect;)

Slayers is just pure weird...

Well, I have both the dark elf series comic book that LK mentioned and the Record of Lodoss Wars movie (which by the way was something like 90.00 bucks). Both, IMHO, are excellent materials and I think the graphic teams of both would do FR and DnD proud. On the other hand, we have Dragonlance. *Sigh*
Although I've not yet see it, I can already tell it's going to be horrible. I hope to stomach through that crap solely based on the fact that I'll be drinking my face in and watching it for comic relief. If you go to the DragonLance boards in 4e there's already a slew of unpleasent comments about the movie. The animation looks as though they resurrected the old He-man cells and used them as a template. One post mentioned that Snow White, made some 50 years earlier, had better animation and that the lack of Disney's budget is NOT a good excuse. But, i'm still going to see it (not buy it mind you) and form an opinion for myself.
Another good animation/CGI movie was Titan A.E. They blended the two pretty well and that I think was an american creation. All in all, if there is going to be another animated movie based on DnD/FR, I hope to God in heaven they put forth more effor and money than they did for the DL movie.

There's a handful of anime that I've liked - Record of Loddoss War, the second remade Record of Loddoss War, Trigun, Bastard!!, Full Metal Alchemist...

But there's a lot of crap, too.

Also, if there's no true anime style, then why is the OP asking if there should be an anime on the series..?

WotC's parent company, Hasbro, has been known before to use cartoons to market new toy lines, and with the greater integration of the miniatures into the core rules, seeing D&D cartoons is a distinct possibility.

I don't think an anime based on FR would be difficult to produce at all if the company actually wanted to put the effort in. This goes for any sort of story you want to tell in FR. Anime can handle it, being a broad medium that ranges from action to adventure to comedy to drama to horror to sci-fi/fantasy. Just like American animation can handle any FR or D&D story. The main thing is WotC willing to hand it over to the right people (preferably people capable of making a decent investment while still giving some respect to the source).

I watched the Dragonlance animated film. The CGI, while not as horrible as I thought, is still very jarring when laid on top of regular animation. Some of the animation is passable. There are a few scenes, however, that look particularly bad. The close up shots of characters eyes while they were talking just didn't work. The art in those scenes looked like flat, scratchy, amateurish flash animations. That is not the type of art you want for a close up of eyes, they showed no emotion, no life, when that is one of the facial features that is supposed to seem the most alive.

Aside from the art, I felt there were pacing problems with the story, weak transitions that I don't recall being as awkward in the book. The voice acting was decent, but some of the voice didn't seem right. Overall, it really felt like an severely unpolished product, perhaps incomplete even.

I hope the Dragonlance movie wasn't a direct retelling of the book. I haven't played or read Dragonlance, and the movie didn't really make me want to. I didn't like the CGI/regular animation mix. They should have used either one or the other. I also don't care too much for the "reluctant hero" character. I think it's overused in the fantasy genre, probably even moreso than penitent drow ranger PCs. From what I had gleaned about Kender, I'm surprised I didn't find the Kender character annoying. I liked the wizard, but I wish they'd have used him a bit more. I suppose a lot of detail got left out for the sake of the movie. It usually happens.

(Case in point: Stephen King's "The Stand". The book was pretty good, but for the sake of movie length, they butchered the hell out of it to make a miniseries. They left out so many details that the miniseries came out all disjointed with seemingly random scenes of people coping and almost no character background. Scenes that were very significant in the book became minor snippets of activity in the miniseries.)

It's decent. Cliched as heck, perhaps, buit quite decent and imo without any serious failures. The second part of the longer series, however, feels rather meh. And yes, afaik the first 2 story arcs are directly based on the author's D&D campaign; the third is based on another RP game.

Now, Slayers, that's a classic. It might be harder to pull in the Realms than in some custom homebrew, but it can work just fine. I'm just wandering how to represent Zel's physique... Mineral warrior is a given, imo... maybe a tiefling as well?

Anyway, back to a WotSQ anime: do you think that it would have the elven ears sticking to the sides like in Lodoss and most other animated series? So far I've seen only one anime character that looks like what I picture a fantasy elf to be - Irene from Claymore. Kinda weird, considering that imo the "claymores" are more elan than anything else. Still, that's about as elflike as I've seen in an anime:

The thing About RoLW is that is pretty FR-ish, Marfa and Falis are totally Selune and Shar IMO :D

I really don't like elves' ears jutting out so that you're tempted to toss onion rings at them, but that illustration above isn't too bad. I could live with it. But when they draw them with rabbit ears, it's a bit much. In our F-Troop campaign, which is not serious at all, elves' ears fold back like a cat's when they're spooked or angry. When I see elves drawn with over-pronounced ears, it's all I can think about.
