I just finished the Watercourse Trilogy.

Willem becomes undead, (Ghoul) by Marek. Marek then "cures" Willem to become not undead. Willem goes back into routine in his home and city. However, animals shun him, and would be able to detect that Willem was "diseased". Furthermore, after Willem is cured, Marek is able to suggest/compel him to as if he was still under Marek's control.

What spell did Marek use?

It's not Raise Dead; per rules it will not work.
Resurrection is out; Marek did not kill the Ghoul then cast Resurrection.

I've never played a necromancer, so I'm curious what wizard spell (Marek character) would use to reverse undead on a PC. Or maybe I don't have that splat book.

"Create undead" was used first via the sword.

Then I would assume "gentle repose" to keep the body from rotting any further.

The name eludes me at the moment, but there is a spell to increase the sentience of undead -- I'm fairly certain it's in the spell compendium at least--, and then a glamor such as "Disguise undead" to cover up the fact he was still a corpse.

Lastly, assuming that the sword doesn't already make the Ghoul obedient to the weilder, "Control Undead" will do the trick nicely.

All this coupled with story flair, and you have the answer.

Does Disguise Undead remove the stench?
I would agree with you that the sword made the Ghoul obedient, Control Undead has too short of a duration (1 min/lvl)

Of course it seems fitting that Red Wizard would answer the question, since Marek was a Red Wizard. Thanks for your input.
