heya, I'm pretty new to forgotten realms and I didn't really understand what the shadow weave was.

From what I understand the "weave" is like a big web that makes magic work (not really sure why) and where it's broken is an anti magic area; but shadow magic does because it's -different-

I don't really get the difference and what they do/are and why they're supposed to work, Thanks for any help understanding this.

the Shadow Weave is another big web that makes magic work and independent from the weave.
You simply draw the energy for your spells from another source, that's all.
Since is independent SW works where the weave doesn't (that is into Dead Magic and Wild Magic zones) unless these Dead and wild magic zones affect the SW; in that case the situation is reversed
It has some drawbacks and benefits (+1 on CL on some schools of magic and -1 on others and other features).

Another thing: Shadow Weave Magic is not the same as Shadow Magic

-The sourcebook Magic of Faerūn has an ample desciption of the two weaves, and might be helpful.

For the record, we're still not entirelly sure where the Shadow Weave comes from. We know Shar controls it, but there's conflicting info as to whether it split from the weave during Karsus's fall, or whether shar is importing it from somewhere, or if it existed already.

Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting pg. 57:

During the course of her eternal war with the goddess Selūne, the goddess Shar created the Shadow Weave in response to Selūne's creation of Mystra and the birth of the Weave. If the Weave is a loose mesh permeating reality, the Shadow Weave is the pattern formed by the negative space between the Weave's strands. It provides an alternative conduit and methodology for casting spells.

He is referring to the claims of the Shadow Weave's origins as stated in the Return of the Archwizards Trilogy as the conflicting report. However, that could all be deliberate misinformation considering who was saying what to whom. Or that its true origins may be this big Secret that only one deity even knows... all statements made In character could be essentially flawed.

Though I haven't read it yet myself I hear that the novel Shadowbred also reaffirms the 'Shadow Weave's origins as a result of the Fall of Netheril' theory.

Have not read it myself. However, how do we know the people of Shade figured things out correctly? They may not have noticed the Shadow Weave's existence until the Fall. Perhaps the flickering of the True Weave made the Shadow Weave visible to these people for the first time. Kind of like dimming an overly bright light bulb strengthens how easy it is to see the shadows.

It does not. It actually mentions that Shadow Weave magic was used to save Shade from the fall, if memory serves, which would mean it had to have been around before then.

not to mention a mini-shadow-weave mythallar having been put inside a simulacrum on Karsus Enclave years before the Fall.

In Magic of Faerun the article describing the Shadow Weave claims that Shar had to 'spread' the Shadow Weave over time to encompass all of Faerun. My thoughts are that there were little pockets of Shadow Weave that she placed for savants to study in a few places. After the Fall damage to the True Weave was so extensive Shar may have decided to truly spread the scope of her Shadow Weave over the rest of Faerun. And beyond? With the Return of the City of Shade we have possibly the most widespread use of the Shadow Weave to date.

Personally I tend to trust sourcebook information as being more reliable than information garnered from the novels. Both are canon, yet there will always be contradictions.

Don't forget official TSR/WotC published computer games which can also be considered canon (at the DM's discression).

WARNING NWN2 OC PLOT SPOILER!

The "Guardian" of Illefarn drew its life force from the Weave, but during Karsus's Folley it had to draw its life force from the Shadow Weave which corrupted it. So, if the Shadow Weave didn't exist until the Fall of Netheril then Shar did a really quick job of creating it in time for the Guardian to use it before dying.

However, since the FRCS says it was created as a response to the creation of Mystra (Mystryl) and the Weave, it's pretty safe to assume it's been around since very early in the Forgotten Realms history. However, I like the idea of it starting out small (and secret) and expanding over years only to be first noticed when the Weave failed.
