| Dardin_DelSundin12-31-04, 12:47 AM | I havent gotten the book for the City of the Spider Queen, however I am curious, does it mention Lolth in it? Sofar I have found no information leading to what happens to Lolth and her stats after leaving her cocoon? or whatever she has barred herself in with. Anyone have a clue about this? Where I can find such information? |

Sofar I have found no information leading to what happens to Lolth and her stats after leaving her cocoon? or whatever she has barred herself in with. Anyone have a clue about this? Where I can find such information? The bad thing about the module is that it ties in with the 6 novels that make up the series called The War of the Spider Queen. Book 6 is still not out yet. :( |
| warlockco12-31-04, 03:29 AM | The module is also a 3.0E module that used the Haste Loophole very aggressively. So a number of encounters will have to be modified accordingly (most of them I think). |
| Meta_FR_DM12-31-04, 03:46 AM | I noticed this and thought I’d comment. City of the Spider Queen obviously is related to the War of the Spider Queen series, but it isn’t directly tied in to those novels at all. You can run the adventure all by itself without having to ever worry about anything in the War novels affecting the adventure’s outcome (unless you the DM want to tie the novels in). Personally I found that Haste being changed in 3.5 actually made the adventure’s encounters more challenging. The adventure was already pretty nasty to begin with so taking old 3.0 Haste away from PCs just made things that much more difficult for them, at least when I ran it. Wish I’d found this place sooner. See you on the road sometime. Dave. |
| warlockco12-31-04, 03:54 AM | Problem with City of the Spider Queen being ran with a Drow party, is WE STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENS TO HER. Sorry for the shouting. Just grates that they do a module, and a big one at that with ties to novels and not even a hint of information for the DM to use. |
| Meta_FR_DM12-31-04, 03:08 PM | I don't know if you've ever played any of the old 2E Forgotten Realms modules that covered the Time of Troubles, but if you did you'd probably recall what it feels like to be led around by the nose because you had like no freedom to make decisions than ran counter to the meta plot (which was effectively the Time of Troubles novel plot). To an old-time gamer like me it seems like an improvement; City of the Spider Queen being kept separate from direct novel tie-ins. But the wheel turns and it looks like you (warlockco) would like to see more connectedness. So warlockco would you like to see another adventure from Wizards of the Coast that maybe moves your Drow characters into the War plot once they've completed (more like survived) City of the Spider Queen? I wonder if there's room in Dungeon Magazine for something like that? They do low, mid and high level adventures for every issue now. Dave |
| warlockco12-31-04, 05:44 PM | No I don't like being led around by a carrot on a stick, however, when a module is tied to a Story-Arc, it is nice to know what the end result of the Story-Arc is, so I can have any ties to the Story-Arc that I want to deal with as a DM tied up, instead of making a judgement call, that I will have to adjudicate to something else a few months/years later because the offical line was different from what I did. Minor things are okay whatever, but when it has possible changes in the status of a Goddess, that is fairly Major. The one thing that War of the Spider Queen has done, Game Mechanics wise is given us the Reason the Demonweb Pits are not part of the Abyss anymore, yet there seems to be even more than that going on.... |
| Andyr01-02-05, 01:13 PM | What novels make up this series, and who wrote them, Salvatore? Any good? I'd be interested in reading them if they're decent. |
| Kuje3101-02-05, 01:28 PM | What novels make up this series, and who wrote them, Salvatore? Any good? I'd be interested in reading them if they're decent. They are written by six different authors but RAS is involved with them also even if he didn't write them. Dissolution by Richard Lee Byers Insurrection by Thomas M. Reid Condemnation by Richard Baker Extinction by Lisa Smedman Annihilation by Philip Athans Book six isn't out yet, as I said. And opinions vary among readers on which ones they like or don't like. But that is against the novels rules so we can't discuss that here. :) |
| Meta_FR_DM01-03-05, 03:38 AM | No I don't like being led around by a carrot on a stick, however, when a module is tied to a Story-Arc, [snip] But......City wasn't tied in. Don't get me wrong, I can totally relate to where you are coming from. If a DM was basing his campaign around the Sembia novels or the War in Cormyr novels it'd be tough to put the campaign on hold until the next book comes out every six or eight months. I guess I'm just saying that in this case it seems a little too much to ask for a module that had virtually nothing to do with a major multi-novel series to give away that series' plot line before the series had even wrapped up. I guess the moral of the story is for Dungeon Masters to do what James Wyatt (<--right?) did when he wrote City: Create a major campaign adventure that is related to a set of good novels (in my opinion) but that is distinctly separate from them so the adventure can play without interuption. The one thing that War of the Spider Queen has done, Game Mechanics wise is given us the Reason the Demonweb Pits are not part of the Abyss anymore, yet there seems to be even more than that going on.... I (as both a Fan and as a Dungeon Master) absolutely enjoy the mystery of it all. See you 'round, warlockco. Dave |

Dave Except the module is tied in with the novels since the Silence didn't happen until the 1st novel. The same way that the Silence is tied in with the Player's Guide and the Underdark. Or the same way the old modules are also tied in with some of the novels. |
| Gambit5501-10-05, 08:16 PM | I've been running a group of Drow for 10 years now. They started with the Menzo module way back in 2nd edition. The players have been running these characters for years, they like them and made them their own. They made a very good job with the transition to 3.0 then to 3.5 (they had a lot of baggage to base the tailoring of feats & skills). I've included "Loth's Silence" in the game and have been running with it since the first book came out and it hasn't been easy. Overnight, an almost epic level cleric was stripped of all her spells and given the nature of Lolth's worship the group has since been deprived of a steady source of clerical magic. The player refused to change diety (which I admired) and the group has made the best of the situation. I've made some adaptions to allow them to run the "City of the Spider Queen", to give them some sense of involvement in the situation. My players have been very patient, but since the 5th book in the "War of the Spider Queen" serie was released, I am feeling that they are very eager to know what happened to Lolth and how this might affect the long running campaign. I know, waiting till April doesn't seem that bad, but I think WotC should release a teaser on the "War of the Spider Queen Aftermath" (at least enough for Clerics or Lolth to know how in game play term their characters will be affected) without spoiling it too bad for the readers of the series. |

| Meta_FR_DM01-12-05, 05:15 AM | Exactly how thinly are you interested in splitting hairs for the sake of picking nits, Kuje? To wit: Is City tied in to the War of the Spider Queen metaplot, in terms of Lloth’s silence acting as precursor to the events that unfold in both? Yes. Is City tied in to the continuing events in the War of the Spider Queen series, such that a DM must await the release of each successive novel in order to advance the adventure forward? NO, absolutely not. Now then, can we move beyond **** and just stick with common sense? Dave |
| GothicDan01-12-05, 11:39 AM | Heh. Funny that we all have so many different definitions of common sense. |

Dave Yes because any one with common sense, which you seem to have misplaced, KNOWS that it's tied in with the novels. So yes please move beyond what ever that voided word is and stick with common sense, please. And so, again, YES the module is tied in with the novels in the same way some of the modules and sourcebooks are tied in with some of the novels. Who's nit picking and splitting hairs? Why I do believe it's you, again. Anyone who has looked into useing that module realizes that it TIES IN WITH THE NOVELS. Why is this so hard for you to grasp? Hells the 1st novel is even MENTIONED in the module and you do NOT find out how the silence ends until the 5th novel. And for the second time since the SILENCE happened in a NOVEL then they are tied in with the MODULE otherwise there is no POINT to the module since the event that first appeared in a NOVEL wouldn't have happened. Wow so hard to understand isn't it even though it's clear. Or you don't understand the meaning of what ties in means and if that is the case here's some help: Main Entry: tie-in Pronunciation: 'tI-"in Function: noun 1 : something that ties in, relates, or connects especially in a promotional campaign 2 : a book that inspired or was inspired by a motion picture or television program Or from a different dictionary: tie-in (tn) KEY NOUN: One thing that is related to or connected with another. |
| Meta_FR_DM01-12-05, 03:43 PM | Yes because any one with common sense, which you seem to have misplaced, KNOWS that it's tied in with the novels. Typical: Another Kuje insult at the top of a post dedicated to bashing someone who doesn't toe the party line or think the same way he does. Now sit there at your computer desk young man, and listen: I never said or claimed City of the Spider Queen was not related to the War series of novels, as my posts above show, repeatedly. Here, I'll even quote my very first post on the subject: City of the Spider Queen obviously is related to the War of the Spider Queen series, but it isn’t directly tied in to those novels at all. First: note my use of the word directly and my italicized imphasis of the phrase "tied in". Second: note how I defined both "directly" and "tied in" by showing that the adventure author deliberately left City disconnected from the subsequent events in the War novels, which I used as the basis of my argument that it was illogical for warlocko to complain or have any reasonable expectation that the City module would somehow tell us the end result of the War novel plot or involve the module directly back in to the War novel plot finale in some way. (I wasn’t saying that warlocko was wrong, only that he was mistaken from my point of view.) From that point forward it was clear as day I was not claiming City and the War novels were absolutely unrelated. But this did not -unfortunately- keep you from coming along and "correcting" me the very instant you saw something in a Realms-related post that could possibly be misconstrued, as though I were actually claiming something I was not. And so the obvious and justified annoyance on my part in my last post. Speaking of that post, I once again demonstrated in it that I understood the module and novels were connected, and that warlocko and myself were focusing on the level of connectivity between the module and novel series, as it related to the thread we were participating in. Yet even after I reiterated those fairly obvious concepts, for a second time you not only failed to grasp that I already understood what your were trying to communicate, but also that you were mistaken to correct me in the first place; all in your most recent post. Now then, the next time you feel the urge to correct someone, I respectfully ask that you first make sure to check that they've actually made a mistake by reading their words in the context of the thread-subject in question, paying particular attention for any definitions or deviations from the norm (reading the entire thread might help in that regard). Part 2 in a moment. Dave |
| GothicDan01-12-05, 04:05 PM | Typical: Another Kuje insult at the top of a post dedicated to bashing someone who doesn't toe the party line or think the same way he does. Funny. That's what I thought you were doing with your first statement about Common Sense, Meta. Just adding my two cents to show that Kuje's opinion can hardly be an abberation considering more than simply one person holds it. From what I've seen, I believe that the novels are tied directly to the module, as well - not using an isolated definition of the word "directly" which we defined specifically for this argument, but a more generic use of the word. That is to say, there is something in the module that is specifically mentioned and elaborated on in the novel series. If we're going to modify existing definitions of the English language, how about we make it very clear? We shouldn't have to sift through context of messages to figure out what a definition is. This is not a Creative Writing class; it is a forum. That being said, Warlocko has every right to complain, because he is a consumer. Part of a consumer's duty is to provide feedback on a product. Even if a consumer's feedback isn't logical (which I think Warlocko's is, in this case), a company should respect it anyway - even if it's simply for the fact that it may lead to them making money. How about we all now agree that we all think each other are idiots, stop talking to each other on this thread, and be done with it before BigSis has to close it down again? There are some very hypocritical statements being thrown around on this thread in general, and hypocrisy leads to absolutely nothing when trying to hold a conversation. You cannot have double standards when trying to logically discuss things with another human being. Example: You cannot complain about someone else's nit-picking when you yourself are nit-picking in their application of a general definition to a vague, contextual definition that you created for a single argument. It seems like there are two parties here that very much do not agree with each other. Usually, I love debates, but it seems like this one actually isn't going to help formulate any conclusions or opinions because the base standards being used on both sides are not the same for sake of comparison. |
| Kuje3101-12-05, 04:19 PM | Second: note how I defined both "directly" and "tied in" by showing that the adventure author deliberately left City disconnected from the subsequent events in the War novels, which I used as the basis of my argument that it was illogical for warlocko to complain or have any reasonable expectation that the City module would somehow tell us the end result of the War novel plot or involve the module directly back in to the War novel plot finale in some way. Part 2 in a moment. Dave Except they are directly connected to the novels as I have clearly pointed out to you more then once. So why don't you learn what tied in means since there are more then 3 of us, now, saying the same thing to you. And again, just like the last time, it was you who wanted to insult me and decided to nit pick about what tied in means. Now please understand the english language or stop trying to "correct" people when you are wrong. Yes the novels are directly tied in with the module becauase that is what TIED IN means. |
| Meta_FR_DM01-12-05, 04:19 PM | Edit: Kuje edited the errors out of his second to last post, so no need to point them out. Instead, some reiterating and clarifying: And so, again, YES the module is tied in with the novels in the same way some of the modules and sourcebooks are tied in with some of the novels. Actually, City is fairly unique in that it relies on the nearest thing to an Realms Shaking Event (Lloth’s Silence) to happen since the Time of Troubles, without requiring DMs to know what’s going on in those novels before playing City from front to back. Anyone who has looked into useing that module realizes that it TIES IN WITH THE NOVELS. <harassment snip> Hells the 1st novel is even MENTIONED in the module and you do NOT find out how the silence ends until the 5th novel. Of course. I have not claimed to the contrary. However the facts behind why the Silence ends do not matter from the adventure’s perspective. But like you said anyone who has looked into using the module will realize this after a cursory review of its contents. And for the second time since the SILENCE happened in a NOVEL then they are tied in with the MODULE otherwise there is no POINT to the module since the event that first appeared in a NOVEL wouldn't have happened. Dave I didn't edit out any errors thank you very much because I have yet to post an error while you keep saying that the module does not tie in with the novels. That WAS your original post BTW. "City of the Spider Queen obviously is related to the War of the Spider Queen series, but it isn’t directly tied in to those novels at all. You can run the adventure all by itself without having to ever worry about anything in the War novels affecting the adventure’s outcome (unless you the DM want to tie the novels in)." See you did say it. "It is not tied in with those novels AT ALL." which is wrong, thank you very much. Now if that is not what you meant then why in all the Hells did you claim that? And no that module isn't any different then the Threat from the Sea novels and the module and sourcebook that TIE IN together with that event. Or let's see, we can also use the Drizzt module that ties in with the Drizzt novels, etc. But the most obvious ones are the modules that tie in with the old ssi games and the novels. Wow such a hard concept to grasp. |
| Meta_FR_DM01-12-05, 04:28 PM | Yes the novels are directly tied in with the module becauase that is what TIED IN means. Kuje, are you actually claiming that a Dungeon Master cannot successfully run City without first reading all the War novels and knowing how the series ends? Is that what you meant when you said (waaaaay back in the beginning of the thread): The bad thing about the module is that it ties in with the 6 novels that make up the series called The War of the Spider Queen. Emphasis mine in that quote. Inquiring minds want to know! :P Dave |
| GothicDan01-12-05, 04:34 PM | Wow. This argument has me laughing now. I'm not sure how this.. The bad thing about the module is that it ties in with the 6 novels that make up the series called The War of the Spider Queen. Can any way be interpretted as this.. Kuje, are you actually claiming that a Dungeon Master cannot successfully run City without first reading all the War novels and knowing how the series ends? Wow. At least the comedy of it all has relieved some of my anxiety about going back to University on the 17th. |

Emphasis mine in that quote. Inquiring minds want to know! :P Dave Wow someone loves thier strawman, don't they? No I never claimed that the DM had to read the novels. I claimed that the module TIES IN with the novels. Gods why is this so hard to understand? Do I need the novels to run the return of shade events that are in the Player's Guide? NO but do they tie in with the novels. Well YES. Do I need to read all of the Drizzt novels to run the module where he and regis and the crystal shard appear? NO. Does it tie in with those events. YES. See that's now that hard of a concept to understand if you know what the meaning of tie in means. I did post it to you earlier as well. |
| Meta_FR_DM01-12-05, 04:37 PM | See you did say it. "It is not tied in with those novels AT ALL." which is wrong, thank you very much. At which point I added: You can run the adventure all by itself without having to ever worry about anything in the War novels affecting the adventure’s outcome (unless you the DM want to tie the novels in) Of course, you already quoted that statement in your "rebuttal", but that didn't keep you from apparently missing its meaning (again). Wait, I think I've figured it out: Nit Picking is so incredibly important to you that you'll ignore any obvious statements that clarify words or phrases you have a nit pick problem to begin with. Ahh...clarity at last. Dave |

We have a troll and a flamer who again, when answered, repeatedly decides to say nothing at all in long winded replies. Who is ignoring statements? Why, again, Meta, I do believe that is you and you want to keep throw strawman around left and right here, don't you? |
| Meta_FR_DM01-12-05, 04:44 PM | Wow someone loves thier strawman, don't they? A straw man argument occurs when someone claims another person has said something they have not. I asked you what you meant in your last post. There’s a fairly obvious difference between asking and claiming. But given your consistent inability to distinguish between blanket statements and nuanced discussion, much less recognize clarifications placed right in front of your face, I doubt you can see it. Yawn. Dave |
| GothicDan01-12-05, 04:44 PM | At which point I added: You can run the adventure all by itself without having to ever worry about anything in the War novels affecting the adventure’s outcome (unless you the DM want to tie the novels in) Of course, you already quoted that statement in your "rebuttal", but that didn't keep you from apparently missing its meaning (again). Emphasis mine. Your previous statement ("City of the Spider Queen obviously is related to the War of the Spider Queen series, but it isn’t directly tied in to those novels at all.") was in the same paragraph as the one above. Paragraphs are built such that the sentences following the topic sentence support the topic sentence. So, using common sense (or rather, common traditions of English writing), your second sentence would support the first one. That is to say, you said, "It doesn't directly tie in." The next sentence suggests that you are giving EVIDENCE for why it doesn't directly tie in (because DMs can run the PCs without having to reference the novels all along the way). You did NOT say that you were using that second sentence to define your own definition for what tie-in meant. That should have been a new topic entirely, or at least made clearer, because those of us who are trained to follow English diction in a more cogent fashion would not have read your opinion as the way you intended it to be read. Am I nit-picking now? Sure am. Because in linguistics and language, the subject of nit-picking can change the entire meaning of a statement. I think we've already seen that in the argument thus far. |
| Kuje3101-12-05, 04:48 PM | A straw man argument occurs when someone claims another person has said something they have not. I asked you what you meant in your last post. Yawn. Dave Yes given your consistent inability to distingish between blanket statements and nit picking, I doubt you can see it. YOU JUST claimed that I said something I did not. So yes welcome to your strawman. And I meant what I said repeatedly. How much clearer do you want me to make it? THE NOVELS TIE IN WITH THE MODULE. Which is the opposite of what you originally claimed. We all see and read your words to mean that, but for some reason you DO NOT. |
| Meta_FR_DM01-12-05, 04:59 PM | I think for me the funniest part of this thread is when Kuje quotes me as saying the War novels are related to the City Module, then cuts out a part of that same statement to claim I said the War Novels are not related to the module. That, for all you folks reading out there, is a real life example of a straw man argument. What’s worse, seeing it in action makes the person doing it look, well, really silly. I wonder whether Kuje will avoid such mistakes when wording his all too certain complaint to the Forum moderator? With that said I think I'm done with this topic. I think I've pretty clearly defined what I was saying all along and demonstrated that Kuje was effectively saying the same thing. I've also shown that I don't like being obsessively nit picked and that those who do nit pick obsessively generally end up looking silly whenever they go over the top. Dave |
