What are suggstions for getting started on Forgotten Realm fiction? [Archive] - Wizards Community

04-21-08, 09:32 PM I skipped the Forgotten Realm universe for the past score of years, but I'm looking for some new sources of fantasical inspiration. Now, the choice set is a bit... large.

Anyone have any recommendations as to a decent place to start with the universe?

I'm specifically looking for adventure seeds (not to reuse the adventure in the book but some incomplete situations).

It is applicable to most any area of the realms and dispite Faerun being advanced farther in the timeline is still incredibly relevent.

The fiction I would recommend is anything by Elaine Cunningham or Richard Baker. It's a cut above the rest.

04-22-08, 12:47 AM -Another good source would be to pick up the various Realms of... anthology books. There are a variety of categories: Shadows, Dragons, War, Magic, Mystery, and so on. Each book is a collection of short stories having to do with the overarching theme of the book title. Anyway, they illuminate various people, places and other nouns. From there, plot hooks can easily be either directly lifted, adapted, or whatever else you want to do.

-The FRCS is THE best place to start, though, as it is a general overview of all of the Forgotten Realms. Each region comes with a little "adventure ideas" subchapter, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm going though a creative dry spell and find a reading sources new to me to be very recharging.
