| Mad Mage07-02-07, 12:19 AM | Okay, so I've been getting word about these game-rule things called "flaws". Anybody know which sourcebook(s) these originate from and/or are detailed in? |
| BadCatMan07-02-07, 12:55 AM | Flaws are anti-feats from Unearthed Arcana. You take one, nerf some aspect of your character, and gain a free feat. http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/buildingCharacters/characterFlaws.htm |
| Lord Karsus07-02-07, 01:49 AM | -While it's nice, I guess, that there are mechanics and rules to govern this kind of stuff now, I am still in the camp that these kinds of thing don't really need rules. I player in a group I was in made his character shy and have a stutter, just because he thought it would be intersting for his character, who was a young priest-in-training. He did it to make his character more whole, not for a free feat, you know? |
| GothicDan07-02-07, 01:59 AM | Agreed. It's not much of a flaw if you get something for it. |
| Lord Karsus07-02-07, 02:07 AM | -Especially when the positive can severely outweigh the negative. Sure, you can take the "-1 HP per level" flaw, but you can potentially get the "Whirlwind Attack" feat. It's not really too much of a trade off, 1 HP per level for said feat. |
| Zanan07-02-07, 04:01 AM | The Optional Rules in AD&D replaced flaws with bonus points to buy other stuff, sometimes to the good, sometimes to the bad of the character. Though ... who would choose too bad a flaw or goodie? The "flaw for feat" doesn't sit right with me, so the only thing I use is age. You may get very good ideas about flaw when looking at the World of Darkness sourcebooks, i.e. Werewolf, Vampire et al. They have a decent selection and alternatives, though you have to turn them into d20/D&D. |
| Stigger07-02-07, 07:46 AM | Storytellers Merits and Flaws were pretty good I thought, very well implemented really. Pity the settings went to hell in a handbasket when they went spookier than thou... shouldn't take too much effort to convert them though really. |
| Red_Wizard07-02-07, 11:42 AM | I believe some of you are mistaking Flaws for Traits. Traits allow you bonuses for down sides, flaws are simply that. Flaws. If you check UnArc, or the link provided you will see what I mean. |
| Dielzen07-02-07, 02:50 PM | That's true, flaws are flaws, but every flaw you take grants your PC a bonus feat, while traits are only -2/+1 types of trades that generally aren't much of a power issue. The most common Flaw I see taken is shaky -- -2 to ranged combat for a free feat. For a melee-based character who only uses range as a "pulling tool" to **** someone off, it's a gimme. |
| createvmind07-02-07, 03:08 PM | I prefer the Banes and Boons posted some years back on the web. |
| Mad Mage07-02-07, 05:44 PM | Okay, then, where do these "traits" come from? :help: |
| EytanBernstein07-02-07, 09:45 PM | Both traits and flaws come from Unearthed Arcana. There are also more flaws printed in Dragon Magazine. I don't recall if there are traits in Dragon, but it wouldn't surprise me. |
| Mad Mage07-03-07, 12:24 AM | Oh, thank you for the clarification, Mr. Bernstein. :) |
