Well, after nearly a two year absence, I have decided to walk the realms of Toril again! I am planning on running my campaign in the Silver Marches.

What I need to know, is what sourcebooks should I get now?

I have the FRCS, Silver Marches, Monsters of Faerun, Lords of Darkness, and Faiths & Pantheons.

Are the books they have released in last year or so any good? I plan on buying the Player's Guide to Faerun ASAP, but beyond that, which of the other sourcebooks do you think are important enough to get next?

Thanks!

Maybe the Underdark book. But if you are going to play in the Marches, I can't think of any thing else you might want, unless you want to find the old 2e material. :)

Some of the old stuff can be found for free on the link below.

Races of Faerun is quite useful, especialy parts describing each race.
Unapproachable East is useful only if you plan to set your game in the far east section of Faerun (there's nothing useful for a Silver Marches campaign).
You should buy Magic of Faerun (it's still usefull altough it's a 3ed book).
Underdark should be interesting for you only if you plan to add some drow to your campaign.

Does Races of Faerun have some good information (fluff) about orcs?

I'm seriously considering throwing my players into the midst of the Orc horde sweeping down from the mountains, and using Obould as a main adversary for a bit.

yeah it includes fluff for all core monster and player races

RoF has a nice bit of fluff in it about orcs (pgs. 64-71). It outlines the subraces, namely the Gray, Mountain and Orog. It also has a tidbit about halforcs and how they fit in Faerun society.

It is helpful but not really extensive. But every little bit helps.

7 pages of orc history and info sounds good to me... thats not really a snipit

Unapporachable East has the best classes. Teflammar Shadowlord rocks.

I agree that the info is helpful, but it is more crunch than fluff IMO.

It depends on where you want to D, my personal favorite is Waterdeep, sometime this year they're making a Waterdeep book, and i can't wait :D . You'll probably want to go and get Races of Faerun and if you want ord fluff go read R.A Salavtore's (sp?) Book, One thousand Orc's or something like that (i'm not sure it's called one thousand orc's , but it's something along those lines). you defintly should get Magic Of Faerun, i consider it my favorite FR book, and you might even (if you haven't already from the past) get some FR 2ed stuff, they're really isn't that much 3.X FR books, so you might want to check out the 2ed ones, but you have to be careful not to get the more crunchy ones, and get the fluffy ones like City of Splendors and Mazitica, or Skullport

I have a very similar dilemma, I have been trying to update to 3.5, and have always wanted to play in FR. So what books should I get, (I don't have any FR books, but have all the core books)?

Thanks.

I haven't picked it up but the Players Guide to Faerun looked pretty good. It has some new spells in it as well converted from Faiths and Avatars 2e I believe...

If you are interested in background information, history, atmosphere type material then don't forget the free downloads of 2nd edition material.

Take a look here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/downloads)

I agree with Aragathor, try to get Magic of Faerun asap. Other Forgotten Realms books aren't essential, they're for extra flavour. But you need Magic of Faerun!

Magic of Faerūn and Player's Guide are the only ones you might need. I think you can skip Faiths and Pantheons that is quite useless except if divine is really important in your campaign.
Underdark might be useful too but is for sure not necessary.

DON"T PURCHASE THE PLAYERS HANDBOOK

It's a total waste of money. There is nothing in it except for a couple of new spells.

i have to agree that for that price, you can get way better.

In my opinion, I like my books cheap. Thankfully the 2nd Edition sourcebooks are not only cheap, but aren't very hard to find nowadays either. But if you have to have 3rd edition... well there is no shortage of books these days. :smirk:

Some books are cheap. I don't buy ESDs and I am looking for Dwarves Deep and it sometimes goes for more than 40 dollars, as with a lot of the classic FR series (who else would like to see more of that sort of approach to a campaign setting splat series?). Undermountain???? EGADS!!!

Anyway, the majority of 2E FR material is available pretty cheaply, considering the average print run was higher sometimes than even a new campaign setting after the initial boxed set, combined!!!!

Anyway, the material is available cheap and is still useful for the most part, some updating is required timeline wise and the FRCS allows for that, giving you enough general informationt to update the timeline and some products are outdated or superceded like The North is mostly superceded by Silver Marches and Dreams of the Red Wizards is superceded by Unapproachable East, Menzoberranzan and Driz'zt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark are superceded by Underdark blah blah blah so a lot of material is pretty much set up and upgraded for you. There weren't am immense amount of stats in the books, mostly fluffy as 2E stat blocks were pretty tiny.

Definitely check out the link that Big Sis provided. The North supplement and Volo's Guide to the North are both phenominal in terms of Silver Marches info. Most of it is fluff, so little conversion is needed.

You may also want to try to get your hands on Cloak and Dagger and Dungeon Crawl Hellgate Keep. Both have great info that will supplement what you already have.
