| makakaja09-15-06, 10:16 PM | Hello there. I have a question about dark-elven drinking habits in the Realms (although at this point I'll be happy to accept any information at all, regardless of the source). Let's say we have a party doing Important Stuff in the Underdark. They end up in a tavern in a drow city of respectable size. What can they expect to find on the menu? I'll assume they have whatever "regular" spirits the slaves can cook up, but I'm looking for something a little more dark-elf-specific than "generic dwarf-made ale". If there's no official material on the subject, does anyone have any homebrewed (har, har) info? Something a little more detailed than the stuff in Baldur's Gate 2, preferably. Any information, absolutely *any* information at all, will be greatly appreciated. :) (Also, on an unrelated note... are dark elves supposed to have black tongues?) |
| jokei09-15-06, 10:31 PM | If they were real, I think they'd drink vodka or absinthe. |
| Power2the109-15-06, 11:18 PM | Don't the Duegar have a drink called "Blood ale" or "Blood Wine" or something to this effect? |
| Lord Karsus09-15-06, 11:39 PM | -Fungus tea. Mmm...Check out Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark for more -And, I am sure that many Drow have drunk poison while out drinking the night away. -And, no, Drow have pinkish, normal colored tongues, as far as I know. Don't the Duegar have a drink called "Blood ale" or "Blood Wine" or something to this effect? -Blood Wine is a wine produced in Algarond. |
| The Ubbergeek09-15-06, 11:49 PM | I remember in Dragonlance the infamous spirit of the dwarves, brewed with mushroom... Strong, with an earthy flavour, whiskeyish perhaps. And in an old Dungeons, I remember hearing a powerfull duergar booze, that was strong even for orcs and dwarves. Kind of like 60% and more, I bet. |
| Riodrian09-16-06, 01:24 AM | Just don't order a "light" beer. -cackles- |
| BadCatMan09-16-06, 02:15 AM | If there was Duergar drinks, they'd likely be poisoned, just for flavouring. |
| jokei09-16-06, 02:19 AM | You'd be lucky not to end up drinking your own blood. |
| Bladesong09-16-06, 02:25 AM | Feywine? |

For example, the Great Elixir in Sshamath is rated "excellent" which is likely partly due to the fact that the tavern itself provides patrons with a wide selection of beverages and its bartenders are capable of producing any alcoholic drink served anywhere in the Realms Above or in the Underdark. Whereas the Lizard's Kiss in Ched Nasad is rated as "poor" which likely reflects the fact that the inn itself caters mostly to duergar patrons and thus, has a menu that appeals mostly to the gray dwarves. The inn is also said to be frequently affected by dampness and overgrown with mold. |
| makakaja09-16-06, 01:36 PM | Thanks for the replies, I'll check out Drizzt's guide. It really depends on how the tavern/inn itself is regarded, its main clientele, how well or how poorly the establishment is maintained by the owner, its location, and the type of meals and drinks they serve. I was thinking something pretty high-class. Maybe not quite up to "Great Elixir" level, but certainly above average. Definitely a place run by dark elves, for dark elves. But like I said, I'm interested in much any- and everything that could be considered a drow-specific (or at least Underdark-specific) beverage. |
| Delzounblood09-16-06, 05:58 PM | Doesn't " Daughter of the Drow" have a reference in it I'll have to check give me 24hrs.... And a jug O' Gut Buster....        |

| Alac Luin09-16-06, 08:59 PM | (Also, on an unrelated note... are dark elves supposed to have black tongues?) From DotU "Drow teeth may be black, white, or purple, and their gums, tongues, and throats pink, red, or purple." |
| Alac Luin09-16-06, 09:09 PM | Undermountain Alurlyath: A sweat wine that glows silver and green. This is brewed in skullport. On the expensive side as it must be stored and transported in ceramic jugs. |
| Alac Luin09-16-06, 09:13 PM | Is that the name of this infamous duergar booze? Nope, Gut shaker is a concotion of IIRC Spoiled milk and dwarven mead typically drank by battleragers, leading to the name of the famous "gut buster brigade" out of Mitheral Hall. |

But like I said, I'm interested in much any- and everything that could be considered a drow-specific (or at least Underdark-specific) beverage.Glowwine -- which is the house specialty in the Glowing Goblet. 'Tis an amber vintage that glows with faerie fire for approx. an hour or more if the wine is stirred with a dweomered item, like a magical dagger or a wand for example. |
| Odin Olarin09-16-06, 10:09 PM | A few things my pc's and I have created as drinks Fire Brandy- a rich brandy you light on fire and the brandy itself consume the flame, then you take it as a shot. DC13 fort Frost Rum- a rum shot that is cold all the way down and cools you off on a hot day for a few hours. DC 14 Thimble Wine- a halfling drink, it's carbonated and tickles the tongue. DC11 fort Troll Urine(we use a four letter word for the actual name)- Firmented troll ****, a hard and dangerous drink, only drunk by the brave and foolish or with something to prove. Fort save DC 30 or die Utopia Wine- an Avariel wine much like Feywine only it's sweeter and gives off a euphoic effect after drank. Made with Paradise fruit. very rare and expensive. I think that's all we have created, look in the Arms And Equipment guide for other drinks. |
| The Ubbergeek09-16-06, 10:39 PM | Nope, Gut shaker is a concotion of IIRC Spoiled milk and dwarven mead typically drank by battleragers, leading to the name of the famous "gut buster brigade" out of Mitheral Hall. Spoiled milk? o.o |
| makakaja09-17-06, 11:44 AM | Thanks, everybody. (Although I don't think anyone will be prepared to drink the troll urine  ) |
| msatran09-17-06, 08:13 PM | Whatever the bar has for sale. Some taverns in an underdark trade route may actually have (Gasp!) Surface goods. They'll be expensive, but you can get them. Some taverns will serve nothing but fungus wine and moss beer. Truth be told, who knows? Your DM should be making this stuff up, and the personalities behind the characters should be more important than their IC booze intake. |
| Lord Karsus09-17-06, 09:47 PM | Spoiled milk? o.o -The Tuigan have no problem with their curdled milk. What was it called again? Kumiss, that was it! |
| Old Sage09-17-06, 10:54 PM | In terms of "disgusting" Underdark beverages... You can always offer up the party some of the "Great Elixir." It's actually just a cloudy liquid of guano-tainted materials that the patrons of the Great Elixir tavern I mentioned above, try to sell to gullible visitors as a drink with magical properties. :P |
| The Ubbergeek09-18-06, 12:15 AM | -The Tuigan have no problem with their curdled milk. What was it called again? Kumiss, that was it! True, I forgot that. We faerunians are delicate, ehehe. ;) |
| Lord Karsus09-18-06, 12:34 AM | -Well, it sure is an aquired taste, as Koja the Lhama found out. |
| Link18209-18-06, 01:00 AM | Don't some of the novels mention drow drinking some kind of green, spiced mushroom wine or something? Maybe I made that up. Either way, if I see you in the Underdark bars, you can drink the thin, watery beer from my Everful Mug. |
| makakaja09-18-06, 04:30 PM | Whatever the bar has for sale. NO RLY?? Your DM should be making this stuff up, and the personalities behind the characters should be more important than their IC booze intake. The DM is certainly allowed to make things up, but he's also certainly allowed to check if he can find any established facts before he starts doing that. Or perhaps I'm odd for feeling that if I could find something that a player might recognise, it would be more amusing to let the characters drink that than something I made up ("a sparkling purple wine, surprisingly mild and sweet, with a slightly metallic aftertaste and a kick like a fiendish dire war donkey") while they're waiting for their contact to arrive. What I asked for was a bit of specific lore, not a lecture on how to play D&D. You can always offer up the party some of the "Great Elixir." It's actually just a cloudy liquid of guano-tainted materials that the patrons of the Great Elixir tavern I mentioned above, try to sell to gullible visitors as a drink with magical properties. :D Unfortunately, Sshamath is quite far away. But with dark elves being such nice people and all, I might get away with having it sold bottled... Don't some of the novels mention drow drinking some kind of green, spiced mushroom wine or something? Maybe I made that up. Regardless of who made it up, it certainly seems appropriate. I'll be adding it to my menu, if you don't mind. :D |
| Manshoon09-18-06, 05:57 PM | Hello there! Don't some of the novels mention drow drinking some kind of green, spiced mushroom wine or something? Maybe I made that up. Either way, if I see you in the Underdark bars, you can drink the thin, watery beer from my Everful Mug. Me thinks, ye're speaking of that Ulaver wine(made and sold by the Ulaver family) . A sweet green wine which is becoming quite popular in Menzoberranzan, lately. It is mentioned in book one of the Menzo-box (p.40) and in Drizzit's Guide to the Underdark (p.63). Cheers:D |
| Link18209-18-06, 07:21 PM | There you go |
| makakaja09-19-06, 03:39 PM | w00+, score! :D Thanks, people. |
