Well U have participated in at least one campaign...
What did u enjoy the most?
That u defeated a difficult enemy?
That u slaughtered anything that moved ti a dungeon?
The good descriptions of your dm?

If there are more than one, please state them starting from the most important for u...

Thanks!

Honestly... I enjoy character development the most in any campaign I'm playing in or running. Really getting into your character's head and seeing him/her go from a simple farmer or shopkeeper or whatever to a great mage or renowned ranger or even infamous thief is always the most memorable part of a campaign for me.

I agree with RaevenBlade. The opportunity to really roleplay my character always made the game for me.

Als, I (as a DM) try to allow the players to have input as to characters. I mean, as the DM, I can't truly say "your paladin, upon seeing his wife's murder is now full of revenge and is no longer a paladin." I allow the players to make their own decisions and mistakes. But, I also like it when they have their own original ideas for their background and future motivations.

Definitely the feeling that I'm immersed in the world, and I'm growing in power. I can do anything I want, but there are consequences. And if I get too big for my britches, I can get my my butt kicked by someone even more powerful.

Oh, and the ability to throw fireballs.

Definitely the chance to roleplay my character well, and as Draco Strang said being immersed into the world/story. Its always so much fun to forget that there is a real world to worry about, and just pretend that the troubles your character has in Toril are all that you need to think about or worry about ;) .

I like a good diversity of challenges along with a way to draw more out of my charactors. Too much of one type of chalenge is too stiffling. Fighting all the time may be fun, but without a good amount of puzzles, riddles, and diplomcy it is just a big video game, and all of the charactor development in the world can not save such a game.

And what do u think a dm should do in order to make the players enjoy what they do?

Taking under consideration the things u said (about the advancement of the character) then maybe gaining xp fast is something that a dm should always have in his mind as a priority...

The new D&D is already calibrated for artificially fast level advancement so that PCs will get to 20th level in the apparently typical 6-month weekly campaign. Such quick advancement is deeply unsatisfying -- it's hollow, false achievement -- and makes a mockery of a credible setting.

I wholeheartedly agree with Faraer on this one. Advancing too quickly is not in the least bit fun for me. I'm content to play a 1st or 2nd level character for months of real time. And I've never been a fan of: "Hey I just made third level so I'm going to throw my new weapon proficiency slot into bastard sword or now I have thins particular skill." Roleplay the learning of that skill or the mastering of a weapon... its not just about points it's about the roleplay.

I am not sure that you were adressing me or not Sillastear, but I just ment that a good DM should take in to account what the player is looking for as far as story related topics are concerned, and by not making the only challange combat oriented. I am not even saying that all of the challenges should be awarded with Xp unless a truly genious solution to a problem was found. I am quite content to play a charactor for long streches of time without the need to advance them to the Nth level, but if those goals of ever reaching the Nth level are not even taken into account then why use the D'20 system. The Storyteller system is much better suited to that. Remember that a power gamer is a power gamer wether they are the DM or a player. I just like to exercise strategic thinking ( not necessarily in combat either ) at least every other game session. I have never been in a game that has gone from first to twentith in six months of weekly gaming ever. it usually takes about one year to reach tenth, and then the game ends. My current DM is not that good and he makes an even worse player.

Understood.

I like to see my players advance as I like to see my character advance "as quickly as possible".

How often do you play in order to get a first level char to 10th in one year?

I try to understand when a character advances too quick or too slow, so please feel free to mention how many hours of game do u need (ex. 2/day and 2days/week and for two years) to get a char from here to there (ex.1st to 10th)...

Also reading the previosly posted threads I see that balance is nice as far as the relatively quik or slow advancement of a char is concearned. But what do u prefer? Relatively quick or slow or sth in the midle?

Thanks!

I like achieving difficult challenges. Make earning exp hard to get and I will treasure each level that I make. Make PrC's restricted without role playing options and I will strive to pick a good one. Lower the number of magic items and I will love the lowly +1 weapon. Make everything rare and hard to get and I feel like I achieved something when I get it.

Give me too much and I get bored and don't appreciate any of it.

Oh, most definately. I enjoy the story to get the characters together. I enjoy the first few levels when they get ambushed by goblins and have to fight long and hard just to SURVIVE.

Then about 3-8th level i put the breaks on XP from combat, i'll usually give them about 50-70% of the actual experience just to put the breaks on things, unless of course it was incredibly tough, they learned something new, or tried things they've never tried before.

I usually do the part as the DM, so i enjoy plannin the story, and seeing them following my hooks, and popping up hooks hidden in the game seeded all over the place. I like watching my characters progress into something that can fight a dragon, and although BARELY survive, win, even at 4th level.

I like throwing them into traps which almost kill everyone, but not quite. Escape Indiana jones style by the brim of their hats.

Describing is good and all, but the players have to pay attention, and if they've got short attention spans, they need to take notes, because i don't like repeating myself especially on things like sights. I will re-iterate if something is more important. Believe it or not, sounds, smells, and sights are very important to the feel of a game, they have to be put out there for those skills to be any use.

Having my players ask me to play was probably the best part. knowing that they wanted to continue thier story was a testiment to the success of my storytelling ability and their enjoyment of the game.

Sellastear our time frame is about 4 to 6 hours a day once a week with an occasional week off here and there because of player shcedueling problems. I do not mine that progression since it seems that my DMs usually peter out once charactors reach about tenth level, and it irks me to have to create new charactors until I play them a few times. Then I get into that charactor, but that still does not stop me from asking to play the higher charactors that I have already invested very much time and creativity into.
