From a novels standpoint, what book did the fourth edition effectively begin in, and is there a definitive list of what would fall under this category? Reading a recent book, events were referenced that lead me to believe it had begun. Might someone help enlighten me please? Thanks.

Novels that, as of now, seem they will tie into the 4e Transition:

The Empyrian Odysey Trilogy
The Orc King (Prologue)
The Orc King (Epilogue)
Stardeep
Rinonalyrna Fathomlin

Right, the Spellplague doesn't "clearly begin" in any one particular novel.

Stardeep is pre-Spellplague, but alludes to the Abolethic Sovereignty and Abeir, which have significance for the 4E Realms.

And also the Haunted Lands trilogy. Heck, I'd throw in the Twilight War trilogy as well.

-I haven't read any of those novels, so...

Heck, I'd throw in the Twilight War trilogy as well.

-I wouldn't, because although the events in the novel concerning Sembia are leading into what the area in 4e will be like, it is also a natural progression of a storyline that has been floating around for a few years now. The Leaves of the True Night, the Shadowstorm, all that stuff, has been building up in the course of a few years and a few novels.

If I want to start a new 3.5E Campaign, what in most people's opinions defines 'too late'. What event specifically from a novels standpoint signals that 4e has begun?

-In my opinion, the end of 1374 DR is the 'cut off date'.
