What is this 'weave' of which you speak... [Archive] - Wizards Community

I don't know what this 'weave' and 'shadow weave' and stuff is! Please tell me!

03-18-06, 02:27 AM basicly, in a nut shell, the weave is the name for the force of magic in faerun.

the shadow weave is magic as well, but a slightly differnt SOURCE.

a frequent term for magic use in FR also is "the art"

pick up magic of faerun, it'll explain in there.

however think of the weave as being "magic/the force"
(the weave is called the weave cause it connects everything like a big spider web thus obi-0wan kenobi's remarks on the force have always sortta reminded me a bit of the weave. although it's not exactly accurate

03-18-06, 03:34 AM Yeah. The Weave is not quite the beginning and the end of everything like the Force in Star Wars, but something in between that, and being "just another" natural force like gravity.

03-19-06, 12:00 AM you CAN'T disable the weave, if you do you don't just have a "magic is gone" senerio (BTW all doing that would do is garentee all your players where fighters) you'd have TOTAL chaos. the weave has stopped working twice in the history of faerun and the results where NOT good.

There is a type of raw magic available but it is very difficult for mortals(and even dieties) to use.

However, in the distant past, a fight between the goddesses Selune and Shar, resulted in a part of both of them being torn and combining into a new goddess called Mystryl.

With Mystryl's coming, also came a type of magical filter/convertor through which mages in Toril could wield magic that was basically the same as magic elsewhere on the planes.

Mystryl eventually died when a mage named Karsus attempted to steal her divinity, and her godhood passed to Mystra.

The Shadow-weave is also a convertor of sorts. It was made by Shar by studying the Weave, and being an independent magic source, is not under Mystra's control.

Thus a user of the Shadow-weave can use whatever magic he wishes, despite Mystra's objections(though if Shar objects, he's just as screwed as he would be if he was a Weave user being objected to by Mystra)
