Try the Candlekeep forums for novels discussion of that nature.

I'm sure if everyone simply named their favorite and maybe why, then it would be Okay.

Of course, that will never happen as soon as conflicting opinions start flying, so this thread is as good as closed.

But for what it's worth, the one where Wulgar dies. Don't remember the name of that one, they all start to blur together after awhile. I like that a main character died because it made it more 'real' (and I'm just gonna leave it at that).

Oh, and the one with Artemis and the Drow in Calimport. Artemis without Drizzt is like a refreshing ocean breeze without the accompanying fish smell. ;)

Sorry I don't have names, the titles are never as memorable as the stories.

Right now my favorite is...Promise of the Witch King.

Good read good fun good novel!

I'd have to say Midnight's Mask, mainly because of how excellently Paul brings the characters to life throughout that series, which made some of the scenes in there (especially a certain death near the end) just incredible; and the plot twist as to just what the entire scheme of the tale was about (never saw it coming - I made the same mistake the characters did).

...wow, I have a hard time trying to be spoiler-free about that novel for some reason...

I really need to read that one, but I find it so hard to read anything 'Elfiocentric'.

Nearly vomited two chapters into Shannara as a lad, and now I just can't stomache the critters except as 'support cast'.

I prefer 'tragic heroes' myself, thats why Drizzt was loveable early on. Now he's surrounded by friends, is well known and respected, and he's hookin' up with someone who is not only a beautiful Queen, but a chosen as well. It's kinda hard to pity the little runt now.
GothicDan

01-03-07, 02:32 PM
If you like tragic, you'll like Evermeet.

And EVERYONE should agree with me.
MarkusTay63

Lots of bad things happen to good people? Then I'm on it! :D

Not that I'm into that sort of thing in RW, it just makes for a better story. ;)

Hate to give GD an ego boost, but he is right. Evermeet was a great novel. I also liked Elfshadow, the whole plot was excellent.

i like the "Death of the Dragon" is really good. There you have two main people dying.
MarkusTay63

01-03-07, 11:44 PM
Yes... my all time favorite. Azoun! <snif>

He is like the character Charlton Heston played in El Cid. Even after he died, they tied him to his horse and he led his people to victory (not Azooun, Charlton Heston). You got to love that level of 'epic' story talling.

Forgot about Blackstaff, I really need to get to a bookstore SOON! :(
Galad

01-04-07, 10:15 AM
Yeah I forgot about Blackstaff too. It was an epic book. I also liked the Last Mythal Trilogy and for some reason I also really enjoyed the Twilight Giant Trilogy. I'll be back sooner or later to add some more favorites.:)

I'm in the minority in hating the Last Mythal trilogy with a passion possibly only surpassed by Return of the Archwizards. :)

Well if it makes you feel any better, I really hate the Return of the Archwizards but I hate it because of the Shadow Weave. I have never liked the Shadow Weave.

IMO love and hate - Last Mythal (needs 6 novels for complete story), Resurrection (great book, awful ending), RotA (good idea, many flaws), Whiper of Waves (nothing happens, but then Lies of Light happens, brilliant novel)

Among recent novels, from the last five years, it would have to be Blackstaff. There's a couple of the Fighters series come close, Son of Thunder and Ghostwalker.

From older ones, I reread Elfshadow every year, along with Azure Bonds and The Wyvern's Spur. And if Mike P from the CBP Gang is reading this, you've had Song of the Saurials for ten years and I'd like it back.

Actually 'the Cities' series had some good ones. The City of Ravens and Waterdeep was very well written. Mort the moneylender at his finest.

The very first D&D books I read were my favorite. I have to include them as a whole. It was the Cleric Quintet from RA Salvatore. It helped really get me into D&D, as I picked it up from a friend and devoured all of it in two weeks. On the other hand, my least favorite book was Master of Chains.

-How is it that we are getting away with this?

-Oh well...

-Among my favorites are Evermeet, Silver Shadows and The Realms of the Elves Anthology. I liked the Lasy Mythal Trilogy simply because it concerned Elves, and a lot of 'em, but it had it's fair share of flaws. Shadowbred has me hooked, and I cannot wait for the rest of the twilight War Trilogy. I also enjoyed the Rage of the Dragons trilogy until recently, when I realized that the storyline isn't as coherent as we all want it to be. The Realms of the Dragon Anthology books are also nice. And, for one of those obscure books that are good, I nominate The Yellow Silk. I enjoyed that one, and it came completely out of left field. And, though not truly a FR novel, I enjoyed Vampire of the Mists a lot as well.

-As for those I don't like- I'll be brief. The list includes, but is not limited to Bladesinger, The Crimson Gold, Bloodwalk, and the entire Maztica Trilogy.

Sojourn was the first 300 page plus novel I ever read. It sucked me into the Realms and turned me into a reader. I have yet to escape from either.
Though Sojourn holds a special place in my heart, it's not my favorite book.
The WotSQ novels are my favorite Realms series, but Starless Night is my favorte Realms book. I love the way the Underdark was portrayed in the book. You got to see it from three point of views, only one of which was native.
MarkusTay63

-How is it that we are getting away with this?

-Oh well...Because, amazingly enough, no one has critized any novel or author. Since everyone has actually stayed true to the OP and only named what their favorite book was (and maybe a little blurb on why). No spoilers, no flames, no critiques...

Just all kissy-kissy the way they like it. ;)

I am currently rereading City of Ravens. It is one of my favorites. Jack Ravenwild resembles another certain Jack, although I guess he would be a "land pirate."

Evermeet and Death of the Dragon also top my list. Recently, the Last Mythal series and anything written by Paul Kemp (Yeah, Shadow Bred!) would round out my top ten.

Do what? Discuss novels?

As long as it's civil and nobody's bashing the novels or the authors, I can let it slide. Folks that break that simple rule will be delt with on the harsh side.

I just haven't come up with a decent enough explination just yet.

"But Dox, I have a right to express my displeasure!" Sure, you want to rant and gripe, you're free to go put up your own forums. This is the WotC boards, and it SHOULD be pro-WotC. We all WANT people to like it here. (And by that I don't me people who want to be jerks, or break the rules, or Jealous Johnnys who wish THEY are big time D&D authors and feel the need to trash everyone else.) Griefers need not apply.

BTW - Bought Evermeet and Elminster in Hell tonight, and I have to say the covers look great! :D

I only went for the Evermeet book, because I actually need it for reference material. I picked up the EL book just to look at the cover, and some other guy in the aisle was like "That book was awesome", so I bought it. Not a big El fan (not a hater either), but anything with "Hell" in the title can't be half bad. ;)
