| dnd.gamemaster09-01-05, 01:11 AM | I'm running a game for the first time and have not had much experience playing the game. I'd like to know what recommendations you folks may have for a first adventure with new characters. Thanks. |
| Darrian09-01-05, 01:19 AM | B1 "In search of the unknown". That was the first one I ever DM'd. Sadly that was Advanced D&D and it is so out of print. I was such a bad DM back then, 25 years ago. Darrian |
| dnd.gamemaster09-01-05, 01:46 AM | How about something currently in-print? |
| Kadasbrass09-01-05, 01:49 AM | Well for a beginner it be easier to start with something pre-made. I would recommend one of these adventures: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/oa/20030530b If you have a near by game store, they sometimes keep some older pre made adventures as well. The Sunless Citadel is a classic that many people enjoyed, designed for lvl 1 players. And of course you can take an adventure already made and edit it as you see fit. Your players are passed Kobolds and Goblins? Just throw in Hobgoblins and bugbears or something else around that CR instead. Over time you will learn to how to make good adventures, but before that you must experience good adventures before you can make good ones. :) |
| Kes Alanadel09-01-05, 01:51 AM | The first game I DM'd was "The Sunless Citadel" and it was fairly easy, and it's for 1st level characters as well :D . It was printed using 3.0 rules though, and off hand I can't remember how much may need to be updated to 3.5 if you are using it. Good luck and have fun! ~Kes Edit: Dang it, Kadasbrass got here first :P |
| Kadasbrass09-01-05, 03:23 AM | Edit: Dang it, Kadasbrass got here first :P And to think I put it in as a after thought :P I'm Currently DMing the Sunless Cit for a group of 2 players, they've spent 4 days (real days) on it so far, taking longer with a smaller group. We've made Meepo into a permament character (they bargained to keep him, he's the groups healer). Expecting to finish next time we play, so when all is said and we've should of spent almost 20 hours with the adventure. Its been real fun for the players and for me as a DM, the smaller group has been balanced between Role play and rolling :) |
| dnd.gamemaster09-01-05, 01:39 PM | Thanks for all the great input. I reviewed The Burning Plague last night. It looks to be a good starter. I'll checkout The Sunless Citadel as well. Cheers! |

Have them run into random encounters with low level creatures - this gives them a chance to fight, and to get a feel for their character. This also gives them a feel for the area they're starting out in. I spend a lot of my time traveling through an area by foot, usually alongside the roads. I can choose to jump into a fight if I want to, or flee into the woods if I don't. |
