Okay, first off, I want to say that this thread is NOT for discussing 4e (although it WILL come up).

What I've been thinking about the last two weeks (since the announcment) was what have they (WotC/designers/authors) been doing for awhile now to lead up to this?

I'd really rather keep this discussion lore-based, so it doesn't get closed.

First off, I think the series the Last Mythal, the Lady Penitent, and the Haunted Lands were/are all lead-ins for some of the changes we are likely to see with the new FRCS.

Also, it's already been stated that the GHotR will have lore up until 1385 DR, so obviously that is a lead-up to the new edition as well.

I also think Blackstaff was part of it (creating a 'new' cooperative kingdom of many races), and the new Undermountain also has something to do with it (the whole thing with Halaster).

And, not to ruflle any feathers, they have canceled several of their arrangements with 3rd party producers of their Intellectual Properties.

I don't want to sound like a Conspiracy Theorist, but since they've known about this for two years, it would be interesting to look back and consider why certain things have fallen out the way they have.

Any ideas?

Just read the new Drizzt novel and Grand History when they come out. They'll spoil most of what's going to happen. :)

the Paul Kemp trilogy will also likely play a part. It seems the biggest change to 4e is the magic system so the Shadow Weave will likely be effected

With the hints of this Spellplague having an ancient origins (whether a legitimate link or a pilfered plot hook) I think we will see that event(s) come up more often in the coming year and beyond. GHotR also has more on Imaskari and other ancient empires, so this might tie in to that.

-And, with that rumor that Halaster was Imaskari- and with what happened to him and all- it seems this theory has some clout.

Either way, I don't think the Spellplague will be a problem with casters after all, but rather the spells themselves, so I suppose making guesses based on "what has gone before" doesn't work too well.

I wonder if The Tearing of the Weave series of adventures will play into this final 3e RSE? It seems too coincidental to me that WotC decides to publish adventures again right before the edition change and just happens to use that particular topic. I can easily envision player success having a hand in setting things off.

Then again, the players involved in a RSE that matters? Never! R$Es are for novels!

I wonder if Midnight's potential alignment shift set up in the novel Prince of Lies will come to pass. It seems to me that the Shadow Weave could play a role in said shift.

The shadow Weave will likey come into play, and the Tearing of the Weave series I think was stated will have a conclusion tied into the new lore/edition as well - don't quote me on that, but I believe something was said to the effect "by the end of those modules, people will have an idea of things to come", or something like that.

I'm starting to think that everything released in the last year right up until next Aug will be tied into future events somehow, or at least have taken them into account.
