In 3rd ed I have tended to get the core rulebooks and the semi core rulebooks(Manual of the Planes, Epic level rulebook etc) for both FR and DnD in general. I got Races of Faerun yesterday and are wondering what to get next (for FR).
So far I have.

FRCS
Magic of Faerun
Monsters of Faerun
City of the Spider Queen
Faiths and Pantheons
Races of Faerun
Lords of Darkness

I tend to avoid regional books and splatbooks. I am eyeing up the Underdark book next even though it could be a "regional" book. Are the Silver Marches or that East book worth getting or is it just fluff. We don't really have a set adventuring area although the current party is in the Dales.

Get Lords of Darkness or it's Second Edition equivalent, Cloak and Dagger. Both books feature numerous groups that can oppose your party and that are located throughout Faerun.

I think both the Silver Marches and the Unapproachable East are great books! But both are very different in their style of approach. The Silver Marches is a pretty fluffy book - pretty much front-loaded with it, whereas UE is pretty crunchy and front-loaded with that. UA has the better selection of PrC's, feats and spells. Definitely the better of the two. :)

The Lords of Darkness and Cloak and Dagger are both good books too. Cloak and Dagger is available in downloadable form for about $5. :)
