What type of campaigns do you play? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I was curious as to the type of campaigns people played. Where in the setting do you play them and what styles do you use?

I am playing currently playing City of the Spider Queen but intend later in the year to start another dungeon crawl of my own design on the Dragon Coast, where they discover the presence of a dark cult of Myrkul and try to stop his followers from finding a way to bring him back.

IMC, Waterdeep is the center of adventure.

Secretly, Waterhavians are trying to influence then unite all of the regions around them...The Silver Marches are good example of their machinations. The Western Heartlands are next. The Land of Intrigue will follow after that.

Why do you think Khelben made that deal? He didn't want Waterdeep's plans to be interfered with by The Zhentarim.

In addition, IMC:

Scotti of Shadowdale has united the Dalelands. With Charisma and appeal to fellow "Heirs", it was a great feat for the 15 year old.

The Red Wizards of Thay will soon show their true colors. Lauzoril's machinations will come to fruition: he will inspire a conflict between Tam and Larloch. Tam being preoccupied, Lauzoril will rest away control over Thay from Tam. Lauzoril will of course rely upon the aid from his mother and her country: The Simbul and Aglarond...plot twists are cool.

The Red Wizards of Thay will then "influence" and "unite" The Moonseas and Sembia...eventually.

In addition, IMC:

The City of Shade will encounter an unexpected and perhaps stronger opponent: Al Qadim/Zakhara. The Geniekind, seeing themselves as pure elements; will want to do away with The Shades-"paraelementals" at best.

The Elves will be having another major civil war, as Lolth grows more silent. A Pure Fey movement will begin and many on The Surface and in The Underdark will join together to return the Elvenkind back to their ancient roots and ways.

The Zhentarim will become mercantile, just as The Red Wizards did. The Black Network, via unbeknownst hereto unknown connections with Lantan...will be dealing with Smokepowder related technology. The individual will be given a chance to make their own kind of Tyranny...

Those are some crazy plans, Gadodel. I like them.

I personally just stick to dungeon crawls, but I'm soon gonna open up the City of the Spider Queen.

Speaking of The Underdark...with Lolth's Silence..another contestant will be entering the picture in full glory: Halaster.

He wouldn't mind controlling more of the Underdark...

My campaigns never seem to last long. I always seem to screw something up and end up starting over.

I think I'm one of those sadistic DMs, but I'm trying not to be. I make it hard for the PCs. I pull punches, sure. I can also lay claim to a very large number of unfair TPKs.

I don't know if anyone in our group actually enjoys the game or if the players just keep coming back in hopes of something worthwhile coming out of this. Maybe that can't accept they've wasted all this time, money, and effort into something that they really just want to walk away from.

I want to fix that... but I'm not really sure how. I'll try though.

I guess I usually just think up an adventure hook, plop the party inside, bash them somewhere near to death, put them in awkward social situations where everyone is either terribly intelligent and seems to know just how to hurt the party, or terribly strong and the party has no real hope of defeating the challenges.

I never plan enough, I just wing these awful violent messes. I am a fan of role playing, in theory. I just am confused and have not discovered the key to a good game... I guess.

I think I'm one of those sadistic DMs, but I'm trying not to be. I make it hard for the PCs. I pull punches, sure. I can also lay claim to a very large number of unfair TPKs.

I can sympathise with you somewhat, but you should NOT be one of those DMs. If you can understand why you are doing it look outside yourself. Are your players cocky, are the characters too powerful, or are you tired playing the game?

I am not blaming the players but when I went through that phase of wanting to see them die I had it in my head they they were the enemy, as a DM it was in my job to see them knocked down to size. Now I look back, I can't comprehend why I was thinking this.

If you continue down this path, players will eventually (always sooner rather then later!) pluck up the nerve, buy the DMG and Monster Manual and run his of her own game. At the momemt I know of a local DM who is holding a FR campaign, where the PCs are not allowed access to feats, PrC, magic weapons, spells and races in the various accessories and the FRCS itself. - all because the DM believes they are 'too powerful'. Players are leaving his game, comming to mine, and because their is no room in mine they are starting their own.

If you want advice (?) expand your DM 'powers'. I put my foot down about rolls (which where the big problem at the time) and used what sources I wanted. In essence I made myself feel that the players where not walking over me. Once this was done, I no longer felt the need to boss them around or try to kill them.

Well that was my 2 cents

I think I should also try to stay on topic next post

i like to RUN the cliche but still classicl "kids save the world and grow up in the process" campaign

my bro who is running the current campaign read about the paragon template in the epic level book and is running a "find the chosen one" campaign, where the paragon is something the gods petition Ao for as "theirs" at any specific time, you see, only one can exist, and he or she "belongs" to a certain god....anyways, it's kind of neat, kind of ripped-off, and kind of scary because i have all of this Ooc knowlege, also, the paragon is going to be one of the pcs later on...scary

if there's a scale, using the examples of play styles in the dmg...as follows for example

kick-in-the-door
something in between
deep immersion

then we are between the last two, because ultimately role playing is the most fun, if i wanted to ALWAYS smash something i'd play neverwinter nights....

of course it's always fun to do the same in an actual RP...

In my game there are 4 players, the discovered that the shades, Zhentarim, Red wizards and other powerful evil group was searching for a chosen one who's blood is very powerful. They were contacted by the harpers to find this person first and bring that person to the harpers or in worst case kill it because it is dangerous as long as it lives. Well they found a map to the place where the creature is and follows it. After they have fought their way trough hordes of monsters they find a chest and one player (the rogue) opens this chest and finds a mirror and discovers that the first creature who look into the mirror become the chosen one! Now the players are on the run from just about every major evil organisation in Faerun!

Curently I'm having a big adventure running in and around Cormyr. The players have been struggling with some mayor problems ; An Orc army has invaded the bounderies of Cormyr which is leading to a great war. Suzail is very outmanned at the moment due to the war. There is a minumum of Guards and city officials , the aristocrats are squibeling over the rights of regent and this makes it a perfect oppertunity for the Fire knives to take their revenge. At the moment my characters think this is their main focus , not knowing that an even greater Evil has risen and had foreseen these events:smirk:

I was thinking that my current game would be more sided to urban adventures, but I have a paladin in the group, and that has limited what I have thought about. I was going for a city that is influenced by a lot of powergroups and the players trying to get rich and extract revenge while acting as pawns. Well, the paladin turns everything into a moral deliemma, so I have to alter the idea a bit.

I've set it in Tantras in the Vast. I am thinking of all sorts of power struggles between merchant nobles, cult of the dragon, sembian interlopers, grudges between churches, and have demonic or infernal influences controlling key members of the city.

I ran them through a home made adventure that dealt with pirate gold in Kurth. I have been wanting them to get back to Tantras to my modified "Thirds of Purloined Velium", but they wanted to explore Feljack's Hall. I created a plot for that, but they got to third level by the time they finished it!!!

Some new players joined the group and I have gotten them back into Tantras, finally. Well, I've been going over stuff with all the different power groups. I'm trying to get each player associated with at least one power group. It will make for better adventure tie-ins and also cross-party tension when two people have different goals.

After "Thirds", I was going to have a powerful Sembian merchant come into town and try to demonize the local Greyclaws guild. He is really the front man for the Cult of the Dragon. The Cult is movig in, but has sufferred by the Greyclaws, so the Cult is perpetrating crimes and blaming it on the Greyclaws. The party will work hard to bring the Greyclaws to justice, only to find that the crime wave has increased, instead of decreased.

I'll toss in some fights between noble families, rival temples (Garagos vs Tempus), encounters with fey, and anything else I can manage. After a while, they will figure out that there is this secret Cult that is trying to run things and defeat that. Afterwards, there will be some OTHER sinsiter force behind them that was manipulating even them. Something dark and evil is lurking in the heart of the city. It will turn out that someone within the City Council is in the Cult of Asmodeous (or something similiar). I will pour out demons and devils and see what happens when the smoke clears.

I've added a cabal of wizards called the Order of the Ebon Shard that live in their tower in the middle of Tantras. Now, these guys are rumored to be evil magicians and into necromancy and summoning demons (thanks mangoose publishing!). The Order claims that they are just wanting piece to persue their innocent magical studies and aren't involved in earthly matters or evil acts. Well, the Order is involved in necromancy and summoning demons, but they aren't interested in anything going on in the town! They are completely innocent. So, the party will be suspicious of members of the Order all the time. They may even investigate them and find some dirt on them, but ultimately, they are a red herring. I love it.

After that, who knows? Maybe I will retire the game or continue it.

Dang Lashan sounds like you got everything figured out & I must say that sounds ingenius that's how I do my campaigns all the time.....but:( my PCs are always evil so its harder to tempt them I have to use money or items as rewards while at the same time keep them from becoming to powerful, then again there's always revenge...

Ha! I was trying to have a more "grey" game, but someone wanted to be a paladin! Seems that maybe we should switch gaming groups.

Oh, the easiest way to keep them from being evil is to not let them make evil characters. I have to say that I place some limits on what my player characters can create. No drow or any of the silly froo-froo races.

None, because they all say 'that sucks' before I even get farther then "Hey, I have a new campagin".

And it's not like they're judging from past experiances. They don't have any past experiances to judge by. Never ran a campaign. They never even heard my ideas. Still won't do it.

They also don't let me play, but then say "You're not a real D&D player because you haven't even played an hour of it".

I don't actually know the reasons. One of them is angry because I made all of Corellon's fighter levels instead Ranger levels - but everyone else said that made sense, right before saying "No" to the campaign.

Oh well. I still content myself with making new ones, and attempt to write stories for them. My most recent one is an Underdark campaign.

Where I've set my FRCs:

The first campaign I ever ran, entitled "Dreams of the Seven" started in, perhaps appropriately, Shadowdale. It kept to the Heartlands, going as far as Sembia to the south, and Zhentil Keep in the north.

Then it took an abrupt left turn into Ravenloft. :smirk:

Eventually it made its way back to the Realms, and everyone promptly retired. That was enough for them.

It was pretty much a "standard" high fantasy campaign, with a nod to horror that became the central focus in the second half (obviously). It ran for 2 years.

Shortly after Dof7, I started a game based in Sembia (one of my favorite FR locations), called "Shadow Games". I've made mention of it in another thread. Szass Tam was the ultimate nemesis. Heavy emphasis on intrigue. Short-lived, due to various player issues (people moving away, etc.).

Next major FR thing I did, called "In the Hands of Fate", began in the Al Qadim setting. In the beginning it was very much Arabian adventures in flavour. However, as it evolved, it became cosmic, with an epic scope that encompassed all of Toril. This was another 2 year run.

After that enormous endeavor, I was in the mood for a complete shift in gears. "On Raven's Wings" was set in Urmlaspyr, but was a very loose version of the Realms, in that I gave it a heavy Victorian atmosphere and downplayed magic a great deal. It was a mystery/horror game and never left the city. Comparatively short-lived, because it was designed to be that way. ;)

(big stretch of time where I didn't use D&D at all, much less the Realms)

"Time Will Tell" was supposed to be a "filler" game that somehow became the central campaign for the group. As I had never intended it to be a regular thing, there were lots of problems. I was always behind the development curve. I brought it to a premature close, with the possibility of a Part 2 being launched later down the road (because, despite my disatisfaction with it, the players loved it). It was set in Hillsfar and around the Tempurian church.

My most recent campaign, which was Planescape and just ended, took two detours into the Realms during its 2+ year run. Once to Thay and once to Kara-tur.

I currently have a sporadically played game set in the Cold Lands (Damara/Vaasa), which picks up after the fall of the Witch King, and is built around the establishment and growth of Palischuk.

The new regular campaign about to come online is set in the Moonshae Isles. It is to be a very grounded game (the PCs start at effectively 0 lvl and won't even have a class yet). It is character-driven as opposed to story-driven. In other words, I'll build the setting around the characters, and then roll with whatever they want to do. I intend this game to be long-term, following the progress of the PCs all the way up into epic levels.

And that's my DM history with FR. :)

Rogue Shadows, that is a terrible thing! Your players don't seem like real D&D players. The aim of the game is to have fun, not have a power trip. Where are you located? If you are in Brisbane I can help you find some players. If not, try the net for new gaming groups.

I am a DM for an FR campaign set in Cormyr. Our campaign is fast approaching 2.5 years of real life play. The PC’s are all around 17-18th level. The PC’s IMC are on the third of a three part quest to recover Holy Relics sacred to the dead god Aumanator. These relics, when brought together, complete the key necessary to open a portal to a Demi-Plane that houses the fallen Temple of the Justicars, where the PC’s believe the Holy Sword of Aumanator rests.

To this end, I’ve adapted the adventures, “Bastion of Broken Souls” by WotC and “Demons and Devils” by Sword and Sorcery studios, as well as multiple adventure “chunks” from Dungeon Magazine, City of the Spider Queen and various other D20 sources. I’ve also recently borrowed ideas from Eric Boyd on the deific cycle of Aumanator.
.
Currently the PC’s are deep within the Astral Plane, busying themselves with the exploration of a massive, seemingly abandoned Githyanki outpost (called Run-Khazai), where they hope to recover the Key of the Just, so that they might combine it with other already-found artifacts and unlock the portal leading to the Holy Sword of Aumanator. Little do they know that elements of two advanced legions of Dragon Riding Githyanki and (d20 fisted) Githzerai Monks are drawing close to Run-Khazai, each intent on claiming it for their own.

Current Plot Points and Background Include:
Orcus, in a bid for vengeance against the PC’s (for their destroying a Deadgate he’d planned to use to siphon newly deceased souls away from the Fugue plane to regain his power lost to the Drow goddess Kiaransalee) has created a false altar and replica Holy Sword of Aumanator that is cursed, and will tempt the PC Paladin into ruin.
Aumanator, long ago waning in power after the fall of Netheril and realizing his divinity would soon be lost to the burgeoning power of a new god, sought to find and control that part of the planes where pre-incarnate souls were formed. To this end, he gathered together his most devout worshipers and mightiest heroes –including the mortal who carried his Holy Sword- to lead the charge against the to-late-to-rally forces of the other Gods. Though Aumanator’s legion won through and found the Bastion of Unborn Souls, Aumanator’s power was not enough to hold back the other gods, and so he was vanquished. It is for these actions (and Ao's actions, see below) that the Dawn Cataclysm is wrongfully attributed to Lathander.
Ao willed the destruction of Aumanator's remaining temples and clergy in Faerun and set forth the creation of Lathander from the ashes of fallen Aumanator. He further imprisoned Aumanator’s remaining deific form within the depths of the layer Agathion within Pandemonium, and sentenced him to reflect upon his folly for the intervening millennia until the deific cycle was once again complete, and his re-emergence into the Realms would cause him to be set free. It is here that Aumanator rests, knowing that a portal exists within the Temple of the Justicars (over which Orcus has built his false altar) that will lead any who seek the Holy Blade to him. In his madness, he will demand the PC’s adopt him as their patron and agree to slay the Followers of Lathander and renew him to his rightful place within the pantheon. He will not show them the way past the walls of the Bastion unless they do so. (I anticipate a BIG battle here.)
Cruel Ashardalon, undead Dracolich consort to the mighty Elf Dragon Nalavarartoryl, Scourge of Cormyr, wishes to bring death and destruction upon the PC’s for their part in aiding the Kingdom of Cormyr against the onslaught of his beloved consort and her goblin armies. To this end, he has made a pact with the foul Devil Belial, who has shown Ashardalon where the entrance to the Bastion exists. He waits there now -unseen and hidden by means of Devilish magic- for the PC’s to find their way into and past the walls of the Bastion, so that he might take them by surprise and slay them all. Belial has returned Ashardalon to his Dragon form by means of implanting part of his Devilish heart within the ancient Wyrm. Unbeknownst to Ashardalon, Belial can control him at will. Thus, he plans to consume the essence of the Dragon and gain the bastion for himself, that he might use it to usurp Asmodeus and gain rightful control of Hell itself.
The Shadovar plot the robbery and assassination of the PC’s for their part in recovering lost Netherese artifacts that were used to aid Cormyr in its desperate battle for survival during the War, as well as the PC's near-complete destruction of a Shadovar led excavation mission of Netherese ruins in Northwestern Anourach. Of particular import to the Shadovar is the recovery of a Weave Sphere from the PC’s, -itself a near transparent ball of Weave Fibers (about the size of a full grown halfing) plucked from the very fabric of the Weave itself- which is thought to have been used millennia ago by the Netherese in the construction of Mythallars and the crafting of True Dweomers.
Vlaakith CLVII, Lich Queen and sovereign of all Githyanki, seeks the return of Run-Khazai (once part of the body of the dead deity upon which the Githyanki capital city of Tu’narath is constructed), as well as the 3 artifact-keys the PC’s seek, that she might complete a ritual that will drain the last deific essence from within the husk of the Dead God and transform herself into a minor deity. I plan on her ordering an invasion of Faerùn itself –and Cormyr in particular- to get at the items after her forces ultimately take control of Run-Khazai and complete the arduous task of both moving and re-attaching it to Tu’naruth (this will also give me game time to take the PC’s to Epic Levels).
.
I got the inspiration for adding in the Githyanki while I was reading through Dungeon #100 and happened upon the poster size Githyanki city map. Get this: It’s a picture of a 6 armed God! Can you say: Tri-partite deity? ;)
.
I haven’t decided whether or not to Link Ashardalon and the Lich Queen in some way (as Githyanki and Red Dragons have a racial pact). Perhaps Tiamat might wish to lend her aid to the Githyanki Incursion into Cormyr so that she may have vengeance on the PC’s for slaying one of the most powerful Red’s ever to have been spawned in Faerùn?

Where do I live? Shrewsbury, Ma.

The unfortunate things are as follows.

1) One player should have been born an orc. He would be happier if there was no 'dungeons', just the dragons, and he could hack away all day, which is a major let-down in that I

2) One player disliked my Oriental Adventures campaign that I slaved over for about a month said that "he grew up with that ****". He told me "I don't want to play a Samurai or a monk who can leap 100 feet into the air." I responded with "Then play a fighter and don't get a ring of jumping."

3) One player...I dunno, he just does what #2 does

4) One player is #2's sister, so she doesn't do anything that he doesn't do

5) They collectively hate me for inventing some new subraces for elves (Moon elf, sun elf - my own versions in no way influced by the FR ones because I didn't know they existed) and gnomes (Mountain and Night). They also hate me for trying to base Gnomish off of Celtic (It just sounds right to me), Dwarven off of German (Which is what is was based off of anyway...), and Elven loosely off of Italian (Musical, flowing language - origionally it's actually based off of Welsh).

6) I tested them - I told them about a 'new race' of winged elves I made and told them all the statistics and everything, they said "That sucks, you idiot, why don't we lynch you"? And I then showed them the avariels in RoF and one of them actually let slip 'Cool'.

7) I also think that they're angry at me over giving drow elven nobles the ability to levitate 1/day (but increasing thier ECL to +3).

Oh well.

Oh, yeah, they're also collectively ****** at me for re-naming Corellon Larethian something that sounds more Italian to keep in line with the language change.

Mine is no where near as epic as the previously mentioned.

My boys were running around Sembia and Cormyr involved in a triangular polictical battle between the Zhents and the Cult of the Dragon.

Here goes:

The Cult manufactured an artifact (a plate with hooks, on which dragon control rings can be place, that summons and controlls all Dracoliches in Toril). This artifact was on its way to be enchanted with the last of the spells, that would make it work.

The party was hired to do the "couriering", having no idea what was in the parcel.

The Zhents caught wind of the plot, and sensing that the balance would fall completely towards the Cult cell in Sembia. They intervened... By stategically placing Dopplegaengers, etc they captured the artifact from the party.

The party is good to the bone. Honour bound and not knowing who their employer was they went on a Zhent hunt.

One faction with in the Zhents (the previous Myrkulists) are all for this artifact and are undermining their own Zhent brothers, and helping the party, and going against the Cult.

So the party is caught in a push, pull situation where their enemies are helping them, then attacking them, etc.

City of spider Queen, has now started to filter into the whole thing, with its own twist to the already contorted plot.

You guys confused -----

I have a flow chart to keep track, cause now I'm bringing in the Thayans and the Harpers. :D

Ehi Rogue Shadows, you renamed Corellon to make it sound more italian? really elven language should sound similar to italian?
I must admit I don't know it so I can't judge, but I'll be interested :)

About your players there's little to say
I woulnd't agree in not giving Corellon any ranger level, but I also coulnd't care less if my DM wants this way (how in heaven will this influence my game???) Bah...

Ah, I DM in a world created by myself (and Shaze) but this has nothing to share with the realms, it's a very low magic world with very few monsters, almost no dungeons and many other changes from the "classical" D&D setting. In this game I try to make my players roleplay, infact thy gain xp most from rolepalying and they had 4 fighting encounters in 8 months of playing (once a week).

I play in the realms with Lilian and the story is long to tell, let's say it started with something very fight-based, then we did a dungeon crawl Tomb (the one with the demilich Acererak), then we went to the realms (the tomb was on Oerth), then to ravenloft, then back to the realms; this were adventures with a little more of plot, we not only had to survive many fighting encounters, but we also had to unravel the plots of some bad guys, Red Wizards, Zhentilian, Cult of Dragon, some shapeshifters, a duke of Hell and some others. Now we're on our way to try and save Piergeiron the Paladonson and Khelben Arunsun from a DMish disease that causes the body to decay and it's impervious to any (as far as we know) magical treatment.

My campaign is set in the fair land of Damara, and the PÑs are daring giant-hunters in service of Gareth Dragonsbane... or so they think. They don't know (yet) that Orcus is planning to restore his hold on Vaasa, Zhengyi the Lich-King has returned (in mortal form), and Yraclea has conspired with power-hungry elemental druids to extend the Great Glacier into Damara, unite the giants and crush Dragonsbane's realm...

...the Unapproachable East, that is. Our PCs (including 2 Nars tribesmen & a Rawlingswood druid-refugee) are from the Narfell/Great Dale area & they have unknowingly aided in political upheaval in the Bildoobaris/NJast area. Several internal & external enemies cooperated or conspired to control the trade fair through disruption and fear. Their plan played out over the course of 2 trade fairs, including the year in between! Unfortunately for the would-be conspirators, the PCs were an unknown element & an unknown "quantity"... The barbarian warriors of Narfell successfully intervened to once again sieze control of Bildoobaris, but only because the PCs were at "the right place" at "the right time" & exhausted many resources to eradicate the major threats & loosen the enemies' grip. A few low-ranking, renegade Red Wizards died during those final days...
The PCs have spent much time travelling around The Great Dale & Thesk - escorting travellers & merchant caravans fom Two Stars to Telflamm & back again, finding & securing an ancient Dwarven forge, inadvertantly helping an ancient-yet-minor religious order to establish a monastery in Two Stars, and generally becoming deeply entrenched in political & economic intrigue around the border between Thesk & Thay. The PCs seem to have no suspicion of the long-term results of their activities & movements, so they will surely be surprised at how things unfold...
(I would say more, but my players may read this... :smirk: )
I would appreciate any input from DMs & players about the Tezir area - near the Surmarsh, where the River Sur meets Lake Mulsantir - I would even coordinate our activities with others in that region...;)
