My gaming buddies and I are debating whether
Or not Elminster the sage actively seeks out and kills evil power mongers of the realms, i.e. would Elminster if he had the opportunity, slay an infamous assassin of Cyric or Bane.

Or lets take the question one step further, say Elminster returns to the realm after a year or so of wondering the nine hells, only to find his beloved Shadow dale & the entire Dalelands for that matter, conquered by the Tyrant of Hillsfar….

What would the Sage do???

The Old sage is subtle, and over his long years hes learned caution, the wisdom of patience. having lived as long, done as much as he has I dont see him rushing in blindly.

First up I figure He'd check who survived, Is Morgrim ok? Where is Storm? Where are the forces and conquerers? Is there already resistance or is control near total.

Then He'd gather his strenght, ensure his allys and freinds were safe, and start to meddle. A Wandering bard can sing songs to sting a Dale'smans pride, of Acenar the Mantled king and others. A Cluster of young freinds out for glory and adventire can be pointed where they do moast harm or moast good. A whispering campeghn among the Tryants allys can isolate the man. All of this is easy to acomplish, hard to fight.

In the end, asuming he meddled this much the dales will free themselves, being quiet and disinclined to submit to tyrany, and he enjoys his valued peace.

In answer to the basic question behind those: no, he does not. Thats not his job. Hes a Chosen of Mystra, not a Paladin of Torm. He acts as a guardian of the weave and a promoter of magic - crafting magical items and either giving them out to young mages or hiding them in places they're likely to be discovered by the same, taking on the occasional apprentice, creating new spells of his own, and so on. He has his own agendas, certainly, but they're generally secondary to his services to Mystra and usually get carried out secondhand through manipulation. He reacts to threats - to himself, his friends, the Weave, and Faerûn - but he doesn't go out trying hunt down those he deems evil.

For the more specific things...
would Elminster if he had the opportunity, slay an infamous assassin of Cyric or Bane.
Just because hes an assassin devoted to one of those Gods? No. If this assassin is placing him, one of his personal agendas, one or more of his friends, or especially the Weave in danger, perhaps, though he'd likely try to halt him without killing him first.

Or lets take the question one step further, say Elminster returns to the realm after a year or so of wondering the nine hells, only to find his beloved Shadow dale & the entire Dalelands for that matter, conquered by the Tyrant of Hillsfar….
Well now you've stepped into a different realm entirely. In this scenario, his home has been conquered by a foreign power. Of course hes going to do something about that. Not the type of "give them one chance to surrender then rush in with all spells blazing" thing the ridiculous reputation hes garnered with under-informed folks in real life indicates he would, mind you, but something more along the lines of what Eled said.

No, he might get himself killed in that.

If it posed a direct threat to him or is closests friends ,yes.Otherwise ,no.

If his friends got away, he would problably go live somewhere else. If they didnt, he would begin a behind the scenes plot to revenge them, and when it's done, moved somewhere else. Why should he care more about shadowdale then he cared about his birthplace?

Hmmm.....

I would have to agree with the above comments, What about Khelben Blackstaff, how do you think he would react to such an attack, do you see him as one who takes it upon himself to "police" the Realms or is he just looking out for his own best interests, perhaps a little of both?

 Never liked that kind of games where token aspirants try to take on a big name.

Plus, it's not just a matter of level... Elminster is an old fox. He would play the young fools around.

He doesn't recognizably police the Realms in the short term (why would you think so?), except in that the shorter-term safety of the citizens of Waterdeep is within his responsibility. He has many times sacrificed his selfish interests for the Realms, which is not to say that he is perfectly able to distinguish the two.

Eliminster is not a active hands on Adventurer anymore and would find heros to solve problems in the mosre dire consequenses when working subly

Wow, Shadowdale falling with all those Heros that tend to hang around there including a resident Spectral Harpist? (not to mention gods and their armies couldn't take Shadowdale because of this during the "Time of Troubles")

He looked out for his interests and Mystra's, trying to manipulate the Realms into being what best fit those over the long term. No, hes no police force for the Realms either - he even made deals with evil folks such as the Zhentarim and the Twisted Rune as part of his manipulation.

And in any event (*Spoilers for Blackstaff*) hes no longer around to be doing any of that anyway. He finished his life's work, and now is getting his reward in the afterlife.

Calling the Zhentarim Mercantile and Thaynian Enclaves "evil" is like Calling Walmart Evil and isn't totally fair just because you don't support their particular services or products or business practices.

Um, that post didn't say a thing about the Zhents mercantile operations, and nothing at all about the Thayans. I'm talking about the Zhentarim in general - the evil organization of Banites run by Bane's Chosen, with an army under the command of one his most prominent Blackguards, looking to take control of the Moonsea and Dalelands regions every chance they get; and the Twisted Rune, the cabal of manipulative Liches, Alhoons, Beholders, and various other evil races that secretly controls many parts of southern Faerûn. Merchants have nothing to do with them being evil.

I think the fact that most Zhents and Red Wizards (and certainly their leaders) have LE, NE, or CE near their names has a lot to do with the assumption that the Zhentarim Mercantile and Thayan Enclaves are evil. :)

Oh contrare,

Walmart follows a rare Capitalist Ideal of buying low in bulk and selling with a small profit margin or even at a lost to expand sales while offering their workers pay rates and terms that turn off the Socialists (Liberals/Democrats) and Communists (Unions) types can actually vary based on experience and local situations.

In Hilo Hawaii they pay $9.25 an Hour and offer Medical and Dental because most of the Able bodies are in Construction and travel to Kona for $15-$35 an hour and because of "Hanai Spirit" (Businesses are part of the community and Family) the local businesses around them that include 140 shops in the Mall across the Street are busier cause they are there then worse off cause even in stores like the one I work in people say "I have been coming here to buy <product> for 60 years and still intend to do so". Truth is most communities kill thier own local businesses from lack of loyalty to thier local businesses, and in fact this Hilo Walmart can't even stay open 24/7 because there is no business for them after 9pm where all the other Local businesses close around them and thus the crowds disapear....lol (note that a lot of the Local Businesses pay State minimum of $7.25 an hour and don't offer Medical Dental but most of their workers still work for them instead of Walmart cause of "Hanai")

I mean those people up in Canada that tried to Unionize their Walmart that became the core of the community for 40 miles (after "it's prices drove out local businesses" or rather lack of Community loyalty for local businesses) thought that because the government oked it and "the people" and public wanted it, that Capitailistic Walmart was "evil" for denying them their satisfaction and "rights" by simply closing down and leaving town leaving 3000 people unemployed and people having to travel 80 miles to the nearest store....lol. Union Labor is primarily why it costs so much for government Sevices provided by Contracters or even within the Government, Utilties and Shipping Services, and oil/gas services...always remember that.

In the case of the Zhents and Thatnians most will deal in Contraban (according to local laws), Drugs (according to local laws), and Slaves (according to local laws) and use intimidation tactics (such as Unions...which the most popular, the Teamsters, have Mofia associations for a reason...it's "protection money") and aren't beyond manipulating local laws like the Liberals and Socialist to choke the life out of Capitalistic competition by restrictive laws that are "In the people's interest" but actually kills business, drives up the costs of doing business which in turn drive up prices for services and products (the cost of paying more for workers wages and their medical and dental is tact on to the Service and/or product, not just given out of the "goodness of the heart" which hurts profits)

Back on Topic, I again don't think Eliminster could do much if the Full force of Western Harpers, and powerful Heroes and Heroines that call Shadowdale Home (including it's "real Ruler" who is one of the Seven Sisters that occasional spars with her Spectral Harpist Sister that is also a resident) couldn't stop the fall of Shadowdale to Enemy hands (The Battle would have been great and only death would be the reason why the Local Heros couldn't save Shadowdale).....probab;y something on the line of the invaders calling forth a thousand Ravagers (Tarasques) would be the only way....lol

Surprisingly I don't find their business practices part of what makes them evil... but that's utterly besides the point. Not even going to go into the equation of socialists and communists with democrats and unions... much less the rest of it. I would disagree and hopefully we'll just leave it at that.

As to the Zhents, they do mostly deal in non-contraband goods as far as I'm aware, the contraband is more the province of the Red Wizards if I recall correctly, and undercut their competitors with harassment and intimidation tactics... they use tactics not all that unfamiliar to people like Rockefeller, Carnegie, Mellon, and groups like the East India Company, right down to private armies and conquest of sovereign nations. I suspect people and groups like that form the basis of where the idea for the Zhentarim find their roots actually. Not sure about the fall of Shadowdale though, not having seen that module yet, or how it was explained. I have a feeling though that it won't be making an appearance in my campaign.

You hate Walmart because they bill themselves as a family-oriented community store - and then sell guns here in the states.

Gun-control is one of the rare issues I sit on the fence about, personally.

Union = Mafia, so once again you have a choice of two evils... like American politics. ;)

On Topic - Elminster wouldn't do anything personally, but he would make sure that the right people were given the right information for the problem to resolve itself. So would Khelben, or any of the senior harpers. There is a reason that there are so many heroes (PCs) in the realms - they are the ammunition, while the big players act as the gun. So the next time you meet a kindly old begger in an Inn, and he volunteers information that will lead your party to a magical item sequestered in Shadowdale by some evil types for the price of a drink, it may just have been the Old Mage in disguise.

Thats far more HIS style.

Hmmm. Again a lot of powerful heros would need to be killed or maimed or hampered or nullified for anyone to take Shadowdale when even a god led army couldn't.

In fact Elminster, if I have read the stats of some of the Heros who would defend Shadowdale right, isn't even the most powerful person of the many Heros that would defend against the onslaught (even by indirect means)

Its not as clear as you think. The drafters wanted to permit gun control so that the State's could operate militia's in defense of the state. The Constitution has nothing to say about anyone owning a handgun outside of that setting. You could easily ban guns without having to amend the Cosntitution.

Yeah, that particular part of the Consitution deals with States being allowed to have State Milita ("National" Guard) and State Police with their armaments independent of the Federal Milita and Federal Police forces....not with individuals rights to own arms.

The rights of individuals to own, posses, and trade property (including guns) without unjust taxes and impedence based on Age, sex religion, etc, etc is actually a different ammendment and Registring a Gun and not being able to have one in the name of public safety couse you are a ex convict out on Assault, Murder or Robbery makes sense in the interest of Public Safety....not being to be able to Drink Alcohol before 21 or smoke before 18 and the "sin taxes' imposed on Tobacco and Alcohol...now that's "unconstitutional", but "Big Tobacco" and "Big Alcohol" knows that denial brings desire so they role over and play possum knowing that there will be those determined to smoke and drink cause they are told they can't. (Every month I card just turned 18 and just turned 21 people buying their once "Contraban" and when I ask them why they usually have the same answer "Cause now I can")

There are guns used enmassee to take Shadowdale?

I'm Sorry but Smokepowder reacts very well (As in KABOOM!!! ) to spells such as Fireball. Lightning bolt, Delayed blast Fireball, as well as natural fires that might be fed by a welled oiled battlefiield (or piked trenches lined with burning oil/tar

Also the Gunners are likely 0 level foot soldiers firing what is basically a glorified bolt or bullet launcher and regular bullets, even launched via combustion instead of symmetrical or kinetic force, is just a bullet without further enchantments and will not penetrate a globe of invulnerability or the hide of creatures that require extra enchantments to injure (such as a Dragon or Demon). Even using a Machine Gun with 10000 regular bullets on a Dragon that requires +3 or better weapons is going just to make the dragon a little irritated.

Cant see there being anyway guns and cannons would make a difference against super powerful Hero residents....especially if they use infiltrators to blow up the smokepodwer stokpiles to make the guns and cannons useless...or even wait until the gunners make it into a field soaked with oil/tar then FIREBALL,FIREBALL,FIREBALL :evillaugh

Likewise couple of dig spells and spikegrowth spells can limit movement as well as magically growing a maze of such spikegroths to protect the outter paramaters.

Lastly, with Dire Charm and Mass Charm and Virus Charm (ruling out Animate Dead and Create undead for the mostly "good" heros), you can turn portions of the asaulting forces on each other and using Fear and Consusion spells disorients 0 level soldiers pretty well as well

Problem with most player's fetish for guns is that they think it was the demise of the Ammored Knight cause it could shoot through Armor, when in truth the Best Armour that a Man at Arms or Knight would wear often was shot at close range with a pistol and the dent polished as a mark of quality (yes Good Plate mail, Field Plate, Full Plate and Solimonic Plate are "bullet proof" against early guns and even some mordern ones)

The true fall of the Knight in Shinning Armour is still to blame on guns though as you could easily field 1000 soldiers with guns for the same cost of a Knight, His Armor, his backup Armor, his weapons, his Horse, his backup Horse, his Squires and the provisions needed to feed the Knight Horses, and Squires fand maintain his weapons and Armor for a month. (as as the saying goes, you don't have to feed and pay the dead ones)

But still, a few Knights in good Solomonic Plate could get in close to gunner formations and hack them to pieces at close range where guns are useless since we are still talking about a place where Gun users and Knights still cooexist. Only hope would be the Gunners have back up weapons for close combat (Which most 0 Level Gunners wouldn't have more then a Bayonet to fend of a walking tank tearing through him/her like Butter

The problem I have with that interpretation of the Second Amendment is that it uses the terms "militia" and "the people" in there. It specifically states that "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." It doesn't say that the State or the militia have the right to keep and bear arms, it says The People, which is your average citizen. That's clear as day to me... despite Supreme Court rulings to the contrary. Personally, I think gun control for non felons is extremely unconstitutional based on that.

Though I have no idea what guns has to do with Shadowdale... what I was referring to, rather unclearly I'll admit, was the improbability of the Zhents being able to conquer Shadowdale given their past track record with the matter.

Well, depite their powerfulness they are mortal, and in there lies the Heros of Shadowdale's weakness

Maybe as they sleep a dark figure sneaks around and leaves strange giant kindney bean looking things by each of the Heros beds as they sleep (Except for the Spectral Harpist who wouldn't sleep and Elminster who is away) and then the pods begin to open (Amazing Grace music starts to play)

And of course when Elminster gets back the Spectral Harpist is conserened cause all the Heros are acting weird...especially her sister who the last time she tried to talk to just pointed a finger at her and shrieked in a hissy voice.

I've seen a quote by Elminster on why he doesn't actually seek out powerful evil in the Realms to destroy. There are plenty of uber bad guys who he could likely surprise and burn to ash. But eventually he'd either not get them quick enough or they'd combine forces and he would be destroyed. He on the other hand prefers to effect his foes and the foes of the realms through middle men and subtly. Best to tear down a Lich with the use of a band of adventurers or brewing a rivalry with it's allies. Then make himself a target to all other liches out there by letting them know he is out to get them.

You have no reason for appologizing about shopping at Walmart cause the way they do business is Capitalistic not Socialist like the way the Government tries to regulate and tax prosperity to death to support their Socialist Welfare programs or how a Communist Shop bleeds the life out of the Consumer via increasign the bottom line via Thug praactices.

You know, not even 100 years ago taxes, Welfare States, and Labor Unions didn't exist and the U.S. had the most productivity and prosparity, Employment was high, business was booming, and people's lifestyle was getting better and better,

With the Leeching Government taxes, laws and regulations to control businesses, and Labor laws and Labor Unions we are experiencing a resession, prosperity is being taxed to death and only the Likes of Walmart not just packing up and going to Europe or Asia to avoid all the life draining taxes and relugations and added cost of suooirting lazy ass Union Labor that add costs to products and Service (INCLUDING GASOLINE WHICH IS A UNION SHOP SERVICE ON THE DISTRIBUTOR LEVEL...lol) is is letting shoppers get more for their money (Look at Airlines Industry , Big Oil, Big Auto....all losing money cause of Labor Unions and Governments grip on them)

To make life even more miserable a Ban on taxing internet service and Emails and sales made online is is about to expire in November and States and especially the Democrats want to let the measure laspe and maybe not even renew so they can tax us to death for doing things like posting and reading posts here (Scary huh?, Will see what happens in November)

As far as retaking Shadow Dale....Why?

It's is little more then Farmlands and the only interesting thing about that Dale is that it is like the FLorida for Retired Heros.

Let whomever want it take it, as there is no Stratigic Value nor Mercitile nor real Resource One considering everybody above them and Below them don't necicarily need anything from Shadow Dale they coudn't make, grow, or mine themselves.

The whole point of militia is that they are free citizens not government controlled military. If ten or more of us got together with guns to kill a nations military that was invading us then we would be considered militia. Not that there need actually be 10 even. Of course our government wanting to control everything would try to make you join them or arrest you for interferring or some such bull. but these topics shouldn't be put on here anyways I guess.. it takes the fun out of reading D and D stuff =-(
