| Thayan12-22-07, 12:14 PM | What year is it, in Faerun? And what major events have occured since the Campaign Setting has come out? Thanks. |
| MazrimTaim12-22-07, 12:30 PM | To be vague, lots. As to what year it is ... I believe it is 1376 but it could've passed on to 1377 without my knowing. |
| Old Sage12-22-07, 07:17 PM | 'Tis 1376 DR. |
| Lord Karsus12-23-07, 02:09 AM | -Already? We barely had DR 1375. Geeze. So much for sticking to the two years equals one campaign year thing. |
| Old Sage12-23-07, 02:46 AM | Well, do remember that by the time "The Horde" article was published in DRAGON #349 [Nov. '06] we were already into 1375 DR. And, as I recall, it's been said that Lisa Smedman's "The Lady Penitent" trilogy, is largely responsible for carrying the setting forward. The second, Storm of the Dead, begins in Alturiak 1376 DR. So we've just entered the new year. |
| Lord Karsus12-23-07, 02:50 AM | -Exactly. About a year for DR 1375, with only a few adventures, novels and articles that actually took place that year. It all zoomed by so quickly. |
| msatran12-23-07, 09:00 AM | That is NOT a job they should have given to Lisa Smedman. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-23-07, 05:30 PM | Well, do remember that by the time "The Horde" article was published in DRAGON #349 [Nov. '06] we were already into 1375 DR. So we've just entered the new year. But that book carries all the way into 1377 DR--in fact, MOST of the novel takes place in that year, the Year of the Haunting. So does that mean we've basically skipped through 1376 DR all in one novel? |
| Faraer12-23-07, 06:35 PM | The leading edge of the timeline is 1385 DR. Isn't that what the WotC 'present' means? The novels just haven't caught up with Grand History of the Realms (where, Thayan, you'll find some of the intervening events summarized). |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-23-07, 06:38 PM | The leading edge of the timeline -- which is what the WotC Realms 'present' means -- is 1385 DR. No? The novels just haven't quite caught up with Grand History (which is where, Thayan, you'll find some of the intervening events summarized). Great point. Although, I will say I think this thread demonstrates why, in my opinion, the concept of a "current year of the Realms" as delineated by specific released products is rather dodgy to begin with. After all, couldn't it be argued that the current year of the Realms is 1390 DR because one of Elaine Cunningham's short stories about Elaith partly took place in that year? |
| MarkusTay6312-23-07, 11:56 PM | Or, by the same logic, we can say that the current year is 1475 DR, because the Orc King prologue and epilogue take place in that year... |
| Faraer12-24-07, 01:00 AM | I think the idea of it being 'a year' in Faerūn is nonsense, but it's not the same logic. Straightforward history in a (the) timeline isn't the same as brief flash-forwards or out-on-a-limb stuff like Double Diamond Triangle. You're just used to the fiction being at the front of the curve, but it happens not right now. |
| Lord Karsus12-25-07, 02:29 AM | The leading edge of the timeline is 1385 DR. Isn't that what the WotC 'present' means? The novels just haven't caught up with Grand History of the Realms (where, Thayan, you'll find some of the intervening events summarized). -WTF!? That's right...:yuck: |
| Alkasyn12-25-07, 06:22 PM | -WTF!? That's right...:yuck: Well, my copy of GHoTR, which I recently got, says that the current year of the setting is 1375 DR. (page 4) Don't know what the newer books say, though. EDIT:Typo |

| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-25-07, 08:33 PM | But again, how much does it matter?:) |
| Lord Karsus12-25-07, 08:54 PM | -Well, it is a little disheartening, not knowing exactly what year it even is! |
| Alkasyn12-25-07, 10:06 PM | But again, how much does it matter?:) Not that much, imo - I for example am setting my campaign a bit earlier, to put all the nice stuff from the GHoTR in it. |
| GoldDragon12-26-07, 05:36 PM | -Well, it is a little disheartening, not knowing exactly what year it even is! What Year is your PC/Party Adventuring in? Can be 1066 if that what the DM running the session has decided The "Kosher" Forgotten Realms is always the one the Players Play, not the ones the Novels and resources "adlib" |
| Lord Karsus12-26-07, 11:34 PM | What Year is your PC/Party Adventuring in? -I don't play in the Realms- which is why I hate the "it can be whatever you want it to be, it's your campaign" campaign as of late (no offense to you, of course). I'm just interested in the canon, of which there is an official current date. |

| Lord Karsus12-27-07, 01:43 PM | 1390 DR until Orc King and 4th eddition is "in Stone" -How's that? If you want to believe AGHotR, it's 1385, and if you want to believe the way things always were, where ~2 years = 1 FR year, it's 1375 (or '76, or '77). -I'm talking about right now, not when 4e is going to be set. |
| msatran12-27-07, 02:04 PM | It is the Year of Burning Assfire, when they take our beloved Realms and shove a hot poker up it's behind, creating another needless RSE and endless confusion for those who love the beauty of this great, grand world. Never has an enema on such a cosmic scale been committed without conscience. |
| sn0wcrash12-27-07, 02:22 PM | well- I just finished the Orc King and I was so frustrated with the sudden fastforward 100 years thing- I started cheking online what is going on... Do anyone have any insight on what is going on? I am guessing WotC is pushing the novel story line forward to prepare grounds for the 4th edition? Is that right? Are we going to have only the stories of what has happened in those 100 years or will there be modules and such that take place during- I am curious about the new empire of Netheril and the Spellplague and the elfs coming back to Cormathor and all. Can anyone suggest a good reference to read about what is going on? |

| sn0wcrash12-27-07, 02:32 PM | -Only the prologue and the epilogue take place 100 years in the future. The bulk of the story takes place in 1372 DR. That's right but does that mean that they will skip those 100 years all together? Its not Salvatore's style to fastforward the time line?! |
| Lord Karsus12-27-07, 02:36 PM | That's right but does that mean that they will skip those 100 years all together? -The timeline? Probably. That's the strongest theory out there. When the sourcebook timeline increases, the novel timeline should probably increase as well. If they want to make the setting "easier for new players", having two seperate and ongoing timelines, where a change in the past could change the entire future, doesn't sound like a good idea. Its not Salvatore's style to fastforward the time line?! -No, but it is his style to set his novels in places where other authors are told not to (ie, the Realms' past). |
| sn0wcrash12-27-07, 02:57 PM | Well- maybe they will try to tie some ends with novels? I am also reading the first and second books in the Twilight War trilogy by Paul Kemp- that seems to be describing how the new Netheril will be founded- When at the store I have also seen other series such as Baker's Last Mythal trilogy that described the events that led to daemonfey deciding to move towards Cormanthor, etc. Does this sound plausible? |
| Lord Karsus12-27-07, 03:25 PM | Well- maybe they will try to tie some ends with novels? -Definitley. |
| Rinonalyrna Fathomlin12-27-07, 06:17 PM | That's right but does that mean that they will skip those 100 years all together? Its not Salvatore's style to fastforward the time line?! Sometimes even Salvatore has to write what he's told to write, though. The timeline moving forward (and we don't know how far ahead it's moving, yet!) is WotC's idea, not Salvatore's. Like any other shared-world writer, he has to be consistent with what the company that owns the setting decides. |
