| ndragonsbane10-26-03, 10:23 PM | I think the Subject explains it all. I was familiar with Volo from 2nd edition, but haven't heard anything about what happened to him and why he's not in 3rd edition. Did he die somewhere and I missed it, or does he just get dropped? |
| Wooly Rupert10-26-03, 10:29 PM | He's prolly on the run... Volo's Guide to All Things Magical was referred to in the earlier books as a supressed work, but it was eventually published. So he's prolly running from a horde of tweaked off wizards who would have preferred that he not give away their secrets... |
| ndragonsbane10-26-03, 10:44 PM | From what I've read, that seems entirely possible, but it seems like they would have included him in the FRCS anyway if that was the case. |
| Wooly Rupert10-26-03, 11:01 PM | Yeah, but they couldn't mention everyone. I mean, I like Volo and all, but there are other popular characters, too. For example, the Seven Sisters. And of those, Laeral, Qilué, Dove, and Syluné get only a brief blurb. They don't even have enough of a mention to show up in the index. |
| ndragonsbane10-26-03, 11:13 PM | Quite true; he was probably cut out just because of size restraints or something similar. Just thought that there may have been a novel or something that explained his death or retirement or something. |
| Straploknight10-27-03, 12:53 AM | Ed said he was locked in a lady's closet with her shoes or some such, but that was 2 years ago at Gen Con? Volo might have very well gotten out by now, or not? |
| Fredegar The White10-27-03, 02:41 AM | I am sure that he published the FRCS before Wizards did. It sold millions of copies in Faerun but because Wizards didn't get any royalties he was erased with some whiteout from the books! |
| Ovim Ironstar11-06-03, 04:19 PM | I think he's the one authoring the new FR players handbook coming out |
| Lashan11-06-03, 06:54 PM | Since most of Volo's Guides are considered "fluff", I don't think that we shall see much more of Volo (unless he changes what he represents). WOTC has turned more "crunch" oriented. That means more Prestige Classes, feats, and other extraneous stuff. After a while, too much crunch gets tired. I would love to see more Volo's Guide stuff. |

Ditto that! That was what I loved about the Volo's Guides -- they added a lot of flavor to the setting. They really should do at least a couple more of those. Let's see, some possibilities I'd like to see covered: the Shining South the Lands of Intrigue the Moonsea area and, of course, Sembia |
| Lashan11-06-03, 07:44 PM | I'm torn between wanting Sembia or the Moonsea area done. Of course, Impultur would be great, as well. |
| Wooly Rupert11-06-03, 08:54 PM | If I had to choose between Sembia and the Moonsea, I'd say Sembia. I want to see more on Sembia because it's been left alone. The Moonsea, at least, had a sourcebook. Someone on another thread said that Sembia was left alone to provide an open area for DMs to play with. But considering that the Volo's Guides were mostly fluff, I think that a Volo's Guide to Sembia could be done without ruining things for DMs that like the area to be somewhat undefined. |
| PhilCW11-07-03, 12:00 PM | A few years ago there was some talk of a Volo's Guide to the Moonsea as an upcoming product (a few in game sources also make mention of it in Moonsea book, and I think Ruins of Zhentil Keep), but it never materialized. |
| Green Giant11-07-03, 04:48 PM | I think the idea of Volo's Guide to the Moonsea may have come from one of the Realms of ... anthologies (don't know which one) and Mage in the Iron Mask where Volo is in Mulmaster doing research for the Moonsea guide. |
