When will Lost Empires of Faerûn hit the shelves? Does anyone know? Is it in bookstores in North America already? Please help.

Also, can anyone post a content list of what is in Lost Empires of Faerûn? If doing that is illegal to do then please don't do it. I just assume that Rob or Ed posted a content list for Lost Empires of Faerûn like they did for Players Guide to Faerûn.

Let me know what you want to know... if it isn't against copyright or the CoC.

First question

WHERE DID YOU GET IT!

Second Question

Do they have an online store?
SacredOne

Klyden,

Unfortunately there are no stats for the Srinshee, but it does mention where she is and why she is there...

From the illustration of her in the book, 'she' appears to be a beautiful, ageless moon elf.

Other than that, the book doesn't say.

Dargoth,

I picked up the book from a comic book shop, in inner city Brisbane. It might have been an early shipment, but I dunno...

They don't have an online store, yet, but I think it is happening soon.

Second, what do they have on Epic Level (spells or feats or even PrC's.)

Well we know, from a poster over on Candlekeep, that the Bhaalspawn novels and dragon articles are further canonized in the new sourcebook. :)

SOOOOOO that's one debate that HOPEFULLY will never be repeated again. :P

I'm not really surprised, as they were never actually disowned by WotC, even though many found the concept of the Bhaalspawn not to their liking. I'm glad to see that this has all been cleared up (and, as a fan of the storyline in the games but not the actual novels themselves, I'm glad it was cleared up in the way it seems to have been done) and curious what LEoF will have to say about them, and how they have been integrated into the "official" Realms chronology...

Ioulaum's Longevity

Myrkul and Bhaal:
Each of these guys gets a short paragraph... think 200 words explaining how they rose to godhood, how they died and what, if any, effect they have on the world at large.

Bhaalspawn are mentioned... nothing more.

You do not get the holy symbol of either, but you get their domains, favored weapon and portfolio (useful when coupled with the Servant of the Fallen feat).

Hope that helps... oh, and the elfblades are stated as well. :P

The Wounding Magic feat allows a spell to deal a few hitpoints of damage over time (much like the wounding weapon ability, I guess).

What did they do with Elf Blades?

Are they different to the ones in Magic of Faerun?
SacredOne

02-06-05, 12:27 AM
The blades that appear in Magic of Faerûn are the MoonBlades, those weapons that were forged to determine the new ruler of the elves on Evermeet. They grow in power as they pass from one generation to the next.

The Elfblades (the CrownBlade, the WarBlade and the ArtBlade) are artifacts of great power. Their location is unknown as they were lost shortly before the fall of Myth Drannor. They are already stupidly powerful, +4 holy keen longswords and then more powers on top of that.
Dargoth

02-06-05, 01:35 AM
Doh! of cause

Well they are meant to be artifacts in the same league as the various "parts of Vecna" artifacts from Greyhawk.

By the way hwat does the Servant of the Fallen feat actually do (Other than allow you to recieve spells from a dead god)
SacredOne

02-06-05, 02:25 AM
In addition to being allowed to recieve spells from a dead god, this feat also allows you to gain a +1 luck bonus to any one roll during a day.

You can call upon the universal remnant of your deity's power...

You can be raised and resurected normally, instead of being labeled Faithless.

I believe the Olin Gisir are abit like those group of warriors from the Mummy they try and stop people from uncovering the past (I believe one of the guys over at Candlekeep said they where Netherese)

Hmmm, I think the group you mention are the Cultists of the Shattered Peak (in the ten reasons for Dms to buy LEOF they said the Olin are secretive elves and in the excerpt mention about a group of Netherese like the one you say).

I've think about the Cultists and perhaps the name of the Prc makes reference of one of the mountains severed for the construction of a Netherese flying city...... i dunno  (think and think is the only thing i can do until the book arrives here in Spain... :weep: )
Bocklin

02-06-05, 09:01 AM
OK. Got my copy of the book two days ago (I am in Germany). :D

Here are some brief answers:

1 - the Olin Gisir are Elven Wizards dedicated to keeping some secrets the way they are (err... that is "secret" and well guarded). They are a "contemporary" organisation.

Mechanics-wise it is a very flavourful Elven Loremaster accumulating "secrets" (like the Loremaster PrC) and special powers to combat fiendish things.

2 - the Cultists of the Shattered Peak are some roguish Netheresse descendants trying to protect Netheresse ruins and secrets from curious. They get their own spell progression table and some extra roguish talents. Look more like a NPC class to me.

I do not know anything about this mummy thingy you were mentioning, but from the illustration I guess it is what you mean. ;-)

Yes, and also an Epic Seed: Mythal Creation. With additional full rules to create your own Mythal. I just read them briefly, but it seems a bit lackasaidical.

I have Lost empires since Saturday now and it's a REALLY REALLY great book

almost everything is descriptive... just very few crunch, and that bit is nice (NarFiendbond is just.. )
(although I was a bit disappointed that Jergal's Pact was so.. hm... boring)

Yes, it mentions a bit of Khelben's Youth (poor little Khelb...) and of the Srinshee
I'm only a bit sad about what they did to Ioulaum and Tabra(two of my most favourite chars) and that the explanation of Mystras ban is a bit... cheesy.... but that doesn't touch my campaign anymore ;)

March 2?

My game store told me that they'd get it in this week sometime.
Bocklin

02-07-05, 04:18 AM
And how did it explain Mystra's Ban?

Not being overly aware of or attached to previous explanation hitherto I find myself liking very much how they put it here.

It is consistent with Rich's bits of explanation on "his" Thread. In a nutshell:

Before Karsus' Folly there were two types of magic above level 9: Epic Magic and 10+ level spells (that is: the regular spell progression was continuing further for wizards of level 20+).

Often, the level 10+ spells and Epic Magic would have the same effects (or pretty similar); the way to acquire this power was of course very different. An Epic spell had to be developped, while a 10+ level spell was simply added to your spellbook.

LEoF states that Humans (Netheresse) favored the level 10+ spell approach (a lot of power quickly) while elves favored Epic Spells (more refined spells that you can fine-tune).

After Karsus' Folly the new Mystra decided to be more careful and completely suppressed all 10+ spells (well, that is spells that were inherently level 10 or more; she did not suppress the possibility to Metamagick your spell to 10 or above; if I understand well) and thus encouraged all races to follow the Elven approach (i.e. Epic Spells), which she could better monitor.

That is it for the condensed explanation from the book. Now a comment of mine.

Therefore, one could say that powerful casters of nowadays are trying to emulate Elven High Magic. But one could also say that they will never really manage to reach the talent of the Elves (translated in the High Mage PrC).

Note that a boxed text also gives an extra "crunch" for the High Elven Mage Prc (Races of Faerun) and for the Netheresse Arcanist (PGtF). Making these two a bit more powerful and interesting than they were. I do not want to get into trouble with copyrights so I will let you discover it in your own copy of LEoF. ;)

And it states that Mystras Ban never applied to epic magic although they duplicate Netheril Spells (as if she wouldn't care what people do with epic spells... sounded to me like that )

Ioulaum "lives" now in the form of an undead elder Brain and is said to be the first creator of the Alhoon while Tabra slew most of them with the epic version of Ioulaum's Longevity because she thought they had killed her mentor. Now she's a captive of the Shadovar, poor Tabby (However they managed to get a wild 23rd level spellcaster  )

Hum... The way I understood it is that she has an easier time monitoring the development of Epic Spells (it is takes longer and is more visible than simply copying a spell in a spellbook, hence easier to monitor). So she can maintain a better control on what's done.

yeah, maybe ;) if Shadow himself makes his velvet hands dirty for a "girl just out of puberty" :D

Scepters are a bit of mix between staffs and wands, they can hold up to 2 Spells from 1st-7th level, but usage of a spell of 5th-7th level costs 2 charges

With channel charge you can use a spell slot one level higher than the spell you want to use from a wand instead of a charge from a wand/staff/scepter to use a spell from it. Nice non-epic version of Master Wand/Staff, but you need ranks in use magic device

and no news about the shadow weave :weep:

What is the exact DC?

With level 23, you got a 26 ranks; maybe +6 from Int; +2 from synergy (knowledge arcana); +3 from Skill Focus, that is already +37. It helps. ;-)

Amazon currently lists their release date as being March 2. I've routinely found that Amazon's dates are usually about 2 weeks later than most of the online and local game shops when it comes to releases of WotC products.

I believe the Olin Gisir are abit like those group of warriors from the Mummy they try and stop people from uncovering the past (I believe one of the guys over at Candlekeep said they where Netherese)

One thing i like about the two new books (wild n LEoF) is the "playing an xxx" and the other fluff about each prc. Their background and how to use one and what they do.

Anyway for the Olin Gisir.
"you are silent and somber most of the time [...] ..as much for the sake for your companions sanity as for the keeping of secrets"

O.G. in Faerun.

They fill many roles, from advosor (what dungeons to loot, and how), but also as stated, to keep others secret. Most O.G. do however refrain from the strike forst, ask questions later philosophy.
Even a few join adventurers.
Baelnornship does happen for them, sometimes (!).

What is the exact DC?

With level 23, you got a 26 ranks; maybe +6 from Int; +2 from synergy (knowledge arcana); +3 from Skill Focus, that is already +37. It helps. ;-)

But let us know what the exact DC is, please.

Bocklin

Sorry if I kept you waiting... The DC to cast the epic Ioulaum's Longevity is listed as 152. Far beyond the reach of any 23. level character if you ask me...

EDIT: I forgot to say that Lost Empires of Faerûn is an AWESOME book. The best since Lords of Darkness IMO!

Humm... Yes, I just saw that (I am back at home now). It looks to me as if it was planned as a "sacrifice all your apprentices" ritual for an evil wizard.

You could cast it "ritual" like, with assistants helping lower the DC (e.g. around 7 assistants sacrificing 7th, 8th or 9th level spell slots to help would do the trick). But then they die in the process because of the spell's nature... So you have to keep them unaware of what they are actually doing.

It is the only explanation I could see.

Bocklin

PS: I could not give you a page number about the "ritual" casting of Epic Spells because my copy of the Epic Handbook is in French (don't ask ;)). But if you look in the section about developing and casting Epic spells, it is towards the end.

I've wondered about this, too. I think the designers know that the ELH was badly designed and developed so they basically throw Epic stuff in knowing that no one really uses it as published. Either that or it's just more evidence of lazy design and development.

That said, I dont know why they keep printing Epic Spells that no one can actually cast.

I am no Epic-thingies specialist, but I did some reading yesterday and it seems that the only way these mega-ultra-Epic spells can be cast is by casting it as a "ritual". In the ELH, it reads as if it was an open option for any Epic spell.

The way it works is that you round up a bunch of high level spellcasters (not necessarily Epic) and you let them assist the Epic caster. They offer him one of their spell slot for the day and according to the level of the sacrificed spell, the main caster get a reduction on the DC (bringing the spell within his range). You can cast all of the Faerun Epic Spells that way.

I guess that's the way the Netheresse casted "Proctiv's blabla mountain" or the Elves casted "Starshine upon the people", raised Mythals, etc.

In the case of this specific spell from LEoF, the idea is that you provoke the death of many people (all who are within the spell's reach) to expand your lifespan. So why not sacrify all your apprentices? It has a nice evil touch... ;-)

BocklinYes I am fully aware of how Ritual spellcasting works, however the issue is that spells intended to be cast as rituals need to be researched as ritual spells. That is, you cant just decide to have a dozen or so spellcasters come lower the DC of a spell for you when you cast it, you actually have to research and develop a specific spell with the Ritual component built into it, and you have to specify when researching the spell how many casters will participate and the level of spells (and XP points if applicable) that they will contribute to the casting of the spell. Once you research a spell with the Ritual component, you can only cast it if you actually have the specified number of spellcasters each available to donate a specific level of a prepared spell/spell slot to the casting.

Thus if the ability for FR NPCs to have cast the Epic Spells in the FR books is intended to be explained as if they cast them as ritual spells, then they would actually have to be researched with that component built into the spell, which in turn would lower the DC for researching and casting that spell. However virtually none of the spells I have seen thus far actually use the Ritual component, which in turn creates the enigma of having spells supposedly used by a certain NPC, when by most accounts no such NPC would be capable of actually casting it in its original printed form.

OMG. I have it in my hot little hands. No really I do. *dies of the uber goodness*

By the way, there is a Spell Mantle feat in the Fallen Netheril section. Badly written though and really doesnt resemble spell mantles, as it works off the Craft Contingent Spell feat, allowing you to trigger spells that are contingent when you want instead of at the pre-specified time.

Mythallars: Minor Atrifact. All it does is allow you to create quasi-magical items in its radius. This means you pay NO XP cost. Thats right, pay your gold, spend a day or so crafting and bam, you have a magical item. :D

Only the 1st and 5th Imaskarcana are detailed :( no mention of the other 5. Am not impressed.

The book has a nice number of prestige classes. (Only 5, seriously that should be the max on any source book. Maybe even 3). And OMG the detail they go into. Instead of the usual page and a bit, each has almost four pages, detailing playing it, the PC in Faerun, NPC Reactions, Lore of the class (DCs to find out what people know about it) and the class in the game, as well as a sample NPC with levels in the class. Some real attention put in there. I like it a lot.

Spells are alright, nothing too flash, a nice variety though. Srinshee's Spell Shift is the 9th level version if that... *shrug* wasn't till I opened the book that I realised Shalantha's Delicate Disk is in there. *score* Mythals have the four sections (Prevalent, Arointed, Vanguard and Prevalent) Rules look okay, have only read it quickly though.

Ive only skimmed through the history chapters. They look incredibly good though. will probably leave this for the train trips when Uni starts, since a two hour trip to uni and another one back will need something to fill up the time :D

Any questions then give me a yell

Hm... that Tabra thing makes me wonder, too...
first, shes neutral GOOD... so maybe it is ok for her to slay the Alhoon that semmed to have killed her Mentor with the spell's effect, but: she would never ever have sacrificed apprentices/additional spellcasters to lower the DC. Not that she actually had such persons available in that moment..

Maybe Ioulaum could beat the DC (he has read all the Nether scrolls... so hey, he got the +30 to Spellcraft... he can have 44 Ranks in SC.. can have Items... int of maybe 48) but if not, even he (LN as he is)would not sacrifice his apprentices... the whole Alhoon/Elder Brain thing must have been a horrible accident

I think there must be a less... hostile version of Ioulaum's Longevity... maybe if you use just the fortify seed with an ad-hoc adjustment of maybe.. 30 or 40 (the Simbul had that idea on another thread, if i remember correctly) so the DC is not beyond reach for "lower" epic casters

AND I found a little error in the dead Gods description:
in the Bhaal entry it states that "Jergals portfolios were divided among the three, with death going to Myrkul, evil to Bane and murder to Bhaal"
which is not correct. Leaving Bane (who has, as we all know, the portfolios of Tyranny, Hatred, Fear and Strife - and not evil(although he would be surely happy if he had that portfolio ;) ), even Myrkul and Bhaal have, if i remember correctly, the portfolios of:
Myrkul - the dead(including undead), autumn and aging
Bhaal - death, especially violent death
Yes, there is a difference between death and the dead - which is important, because Bhaal chose death so that he could "control" the powers of Bane (whom should he rule if no one's alive?) and Myrkul (the mass of the dead)

Hi again The Simbul and others!

After re-checking my ELH I really do not find any indication that Epic spells have to be developped as rituals to be casted so.

It seems that ANY Epic Spell can be cast as a ritual. for example, there are no indications of a DD modifier for spells that would be developped as rituals nor has the entry describing the ritual casting any indication that this could not be done with any spell.

So if there is a specific page number or indication you could give me about this, I'd be happy. As it stands I really believe that any of these Epic Faerûn spells can just be cast as a ritual.

Of course, it does not solve the issue of previous texts that "X casted this Epic Spell and destroyed a realm". You just have to assume that he did not do this on his own but with the help of a bunch of apprentices...

BocklinRitual spells and additional participants are a mitigating factor to a spell, just like backlash damage, XP costs, and increased casting times. All factors included in an Epic Spell (whether they increase or decrease the DC) are included when the spell is developed, thus it is assumed that a ritual spell must be researched and developed as such. If you can simply add ritual participants to any spell without researching a new version of it, then you could just as eaisly spontnaeously add factors to a spell that increase its damage, or lower its XP or Backlash damage by boosting the Spellcraft DC. But this isnt the case, once you research an Epic Spell, all of its factors and specifics are effectively set in stone. In addition, the text describing ritual spells is worded as the following;
Additional Participants: Epic spells can be developed that specifically require additional participants. These spells are called rituals. An epic spell developed as a ritual requires a specific number of additional participants, who each must use up one spell slot of a specified level for the day. During an epic spell’s development, the spell’s creator determines the number of additional participants and the level of the spell slots to be contributed. If the exact number of spellcasters does not partake in the casting, or if the casters do not each contribute the proper spell slot, the epic spell automatically fails. To participate, each participant readies an action to contribute his or her raw spell energy when the primary caster begins the epic spell. Additional participants in a ritual spell reduce the Spellcraft DC, as shown on Table: Additional Participants in Rituals. Each additional participant may only contribute one spell slot. It doesn’t matter whether the additional participants are arcane or divine spellcasters; only the level of the spell slot contributed matters. A contributed spell slot is treated as if normally cast. A wizard may contribute either a prepared, uncast spell slot, or an open, unprepared slot. The Spellcraft DC adjustments for each additional participant stack. (bold emphasis mine).

If the Epic Level Handbook doesnt include the above text, or the text is different, you can download the 3.5 version of the Epic Level rules from the S.R.D. mainpage, since those rules are now open gaming content.

You can theoretically take any Epic Spell and turn it into a Ritual, but in order to do so you must research a new version of that spell and include the Ritual component and its associated mitigating factors. Thus if Tabra was to cast Ioulaum's Longevity she would need to research and develop and alternate version of the same spell that would be within her ability to cast.

*faking offense* hey now, who are you calling a munchkin?

Heh, I did just that back in 2e, I went to great lengths to find a person who no one else living would have known the name of, and used the imprison spell on them. This was part of a time travel campaign, so when I reverted back to my own time, I was able to cast the reverse of the spell since I knew their name, and poof, had a shiny new addition to my wizard's library. Of course, it was mostly to "have" them as opposed to "use" them since I don't think they ever had real stats.

I'd be interested in hearing how other people did it.

Huh... and I understood the Scrolls thing that way that you get one Level for the FIRST scroll you read and the "chapter-rewards" for reading a whole part of them...

just can't believe that Ioulaum (I think he has read nearly all the scrolls) is about Level 60-70 or so o.O

and about Ars Factum.. IMO some Netherese must have at least partially understood them, otherwise there would be no crown of horns today.
But to understand them you MUST have read all the other scrolls.... (so says Netheril: Empire of Magic ;) )

Regarding the Nether Scrolls and Level gain from reading them:

It's one level per scroll, and it takes one month per scroll to read. So, reading all 50 requires 50 months (4 years and 2 months) and grants the reader 50 levels in (an) arcane spellcaster class(es).

It is ridiculous to think that reading the whole set of Nether Scrolls gives you 50 'bonus' levels. Both Ioulaum, the Srinshee and no doubt more than a few others did this and they certainly were not level 50+.

I took the very poorly worded write-up (which hopefully Rich will clarify in his thread) to mean that any spellcasting individual fortunate enough to get their hands on a Nether Scroll gets a one-off +1 level boost. After that, they get an "additional" bonus depending on if they read a complete chapter of the set.

This would be indirectly supported bgy the timeline entry for Netheril which notes how the gnome thief Rilmohx Sha Quessir stole a glance at one of the Nether Scrolls and was then able to cast illusion spells (in other words, he gained a level as a specialist illusionist).

Fifty bonus levels ... :noway:

Their 3E home planes and divine realm names of course! :)

Such information is essential if we are ever to have a better vision of the FR planes!

For instance, Leira's realm, the Courts of Illusion (if it is/was still called that) in 2E was in Limbo. However, in 3E one might surmise it was in Dweomerheart as there is no more Limbo, but it would be nice to know that for sure.

Also, Aupenser, I am dying to know what his divine realm was called, and what plane it was attached to. Was it part of a current plane? Or was it part of a now "lost" plane that imploded or slipped beyond the Astral?

Inquiring minds want to know! :)

Also, Aupenser, I am dying to know what his divine realm was called, and what plane it was attached to. Was it part of a current plane? Or was it part of a now "lost" plane that imploded or slipped beyond the Astral?

As Auppenser is still alive (barely), I imagine his realm is still in existence, although probably in a rather run-down shape. As I mentioned in the "Ask the Authors" thread, I would guess that the plane it was/is on would be the House of Knowledge.

His domain could be fading though, like the plane of Zigguraxus (described, once again, in the Prestige in the Realms download) where the Untheric deities used to reside :) I kind of like this idea.

Here is some additional info for my write-up of Auppenser for LEoF that did not see print. Keep in mind that it cannot be considered "official" Realmslore.

Auppenser
Intermediate Deity
Symbol: An eye centered within a perfect hexagonally-shaped gem
Home Plane: Dweomerheart
Realm: The Tranquil Grounds
Worshippers: Blues, duergar, monks, psions, psychic warriors
Cleric Alignments: NG, N, CN, LN, NE

Ed, you are very cool in my book! Thanks for the info!

Your "unofficial" guidance is as good as gold to me, but I promise I won't hold you to it.

Any suggestions as to what he might have called his divine realm?

Hmmm... I think some of my players are about to find an interesting six-sided crystal with an eye symbol carved into it when next they collect some treasure. Could be fun...

That's good stuff. You guys really need to persaude someone in charge to put this sort of information on the dead deities into a web enhancement, since there are a lot of people requesting it (with good reason!).

Excellent book! Wasn't disapointed at all, and mucho useful stuff included:D
There's 2 things that did confuse me tho'.
1. Nether Scrolls. Says if one scroll is read, their arcane caster level is increased automatically by one. Is this for *each* scroll (as in +50 caster level if one has read the entire set)?
2. Another contradiction on Netheril (not negative, just confusing). Under Mystra's ban and epic magic, says the Netherese abandoned epic magic after the discovery of the Nether Scrolls, preferring leveled spells of 10th+ magic. K, decent explanation I think, and totally acceptable. Contradiction comes from the PGtF. Says the Netherese Arcanist were pioneers of epic magic, etc, and the entire prestige class is based off of epic spellcasting. Anyone find it odd how a civilization can pioneer something while having abandoned it almost completely? And how was such a contradiction missed before publishing?

I got my copy on Saturday, from a local bookstore.
:w00t: :dancin: :king:

My initial desire to save money by purchasing it online was outweighed by my desire to not have to wait another week or so to have it.

Effectively shipping costs and several days of waiting time effectively make up for the discounts available from online vendors. Although to be honest I didnt expect any local outlets to have the book, and even then I have only seen one copy between several dozen bookstores.

I am pretty sure its just one level, if that wasnt the case then most of Netheril's early spellcasters would have upwards of 70-90 character levels instead of 20-40. Also, all other artifacts that grant you a level boost (oor 1/2 a level boost in case of Librams of Silver Magic, etc) specify that you only gain the bonus once, thus I am pretty sure the same holds true for the Nether scrolls.

And how was such a contradiction missed before publishing? It may be that the Netherese Arcanist PrC wasnt invented/adopted by the Netherese until after the Fall of Netheril, to carry on their traditions under the new spellcasting system, or perhaps Mystra allowed their abilities to be changed when the Weave was changed. That said, this isnt the first time there has been a contradiction regarding Magic, the Weave, Mystra's Ban, etc in a FR sourcebook.
