| Eriedm06-19-05, 09:17 AM | Forgotten Realms DM's: I am starting the first adventure path from Dungeon and I am trying to figure out where in Faerun Cauldren and Istvin would lie? Any help would be appreciated, I thought of ditching cauldren and setting a good portion of the adventures in Waterdeep. What do you think? I also asked a similar question on the Eberron boards, we haven't decided which setting to use yet. |
| Elrumir06-19-05, 05:38 PM | Actually, I've tried using Cauldron in the FR as well, and Waterdeep was what came to mind for me as well. However, you'll need to figure out what to do with that big volcano-based lake in the center of town. Furthermore, Waterdeep is a lot bigger than Cauldron, which makes it easier for the PCs to find more resources. On the other hand, for the dungeon-delving that takes place in the first adventure could easily fit into the Undermountain. After playing, I think it would have been better to take another, somewhat smaller city, like Baldur's Gate or Berdusk, or perhaps somewhere in another part of the world, like perhaps the Vilhon Reach or even Cormyr or the Dalelands... |

It's about the same equivelant that was done in Greyhawk (dumped in a out of the way jungle). As for Istivin, it's hard to say. Part of the whole thing about Istivin is the recent war with the giants. It's weakened the whole kingdom. It also has the history of being over the drow city. Cormyr has had the recent war, but no history of being over drow territory. So, you can make compromises somewhere. |

The "Free City" of the 2nd AP is Waterdeep, and "Diamond Lake" is Daggerford. However, the two Adventure Paths are only tangentially related to each other, so take this for what it's worth. (I mention this only because I sometimes play with a DM who likes to maintain consistency between various Realms campaigns he runs.) You can find conversion notes for the first adventure of the second AP on the paizo site in the Dungeon #124 WE. --Eric |
| Halornn_Kaala06-20-05, 11:00 AM | This has been discussed before, both here, and at the paizo.com site. Most folks tend to either put Cauldron in Chult, or in the Lake of Steam area. Me, I put Cauldron in the northeastern section of the Forest of Mir, almost as if the Marching Mountains extend into the forest, the last (eastern-most) peak being the site for Cauldron. It's worked fairly well, with The Lucky Monkey etc. being in the forest, and the PCs are not too far from Almraiven should they need weapons/magic that the town itself just can't provide. The other benefit of this location is that there are some good sourcebooks of the area (Empires of the Shining Sea, Lands of Intrigue, and Calimport, the latter two are available free as a download, I think). Of course, my PCs have left Cauldron for some of their own plot lines, so we're not technically doing the AP at the moment (until I can lure them back somehow). :plotting: Be aware that if you put Cauldron anywhere but a city in the cone of a volcano, one of the adventures at least simply will not be applicable. |

See Volo's Guide to Cormyr (the Plungepool), Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark (environs of Sshamath, IIRC), Underdark, and one of the War of the Spider Queen novels. The name escapes me, but it starts with an "s". I think Arabel would be an interesting candidate for Shadows of Istivin. Alternatively, if you're a few years ahead in the timeline, you could have Tilverton be rebuilt, but with lingering consequences. --Eric |
| Lashan06-20-05, 12:02 PM | I stand corrected. |
| Damien_Hiro06-20-05, 02:49 PM | I would put Cauldron in the Border Kingdoms near the Neth Stand. It is close to volcanic region and the region is not heavily defined through any supplements. |
