Everybody, how do you see yourselves as a DnD character? I'm:
Sun elf bard2/rogue6 CN
str 8
dex 16
con 4(-3 to HP isn't cool, I know :) )
int 17
wis 20
cha 14
immunities: mind effecting spells, enchantments, illusions
cool, huh? :)

Whats up with everybody wanting to be Elves? Are you not comfortable being your good old Human self?
Tahl-Ali

07-29-03, 01:08 PM
why are you immune to enchantments??? That's not fair. Of course you're not immune to mine  Being the chosen of Leira has it's upside.
But i'm not listing my level, everytime someone sees the "rogue lvl 18" they get all judgemental; saying mean things like "he's a theif he's a theif!!!" When really i'm just a poor tailor trying to make my way in the world, selling fine quality vests to a world so desperately in need of them. Call ME a theif will they, I'll show them theif, i'll show them theif after I steal away the entirety of their life's work and pander it on the streets for "everything must go!!!" discount prices.
That, plus a little divine essense from being a chosen, the sweet sweet bonuses that I get from it, magic items galor, and a childhood best friend to back me up. (by the way he's mage/priest, way more powerful then me, and a chosen of the goddess of time) Wow not to mention the Fire/Earth Wizard and Wizard/Priestess of Mystra (chosen) that I pall around with.
Yeah, go ahead, call me a theif.

Hmm i think for me and a few people on the post that know me would agree

Hmm this is tough, I think I'd be:

N human Wizard/Arcane Devotee of Oghma
STR 7 -> because I haven't trained my muscles in eons (arms at least)
DEX 15-> because I can be sneaky and sleight of hand when I want to (successfully practiced pickpocketing on schoolmates :D, followed by restitution of course... but not immediately  )
CON 16 -> because I am pretty healthy and tough (never been ill in the last four years, despite some less-than-wise activities like athletic training in December under the snow)
INT 17 -> because last (and only) IQ test I went through gave a result of 149, and although the test results were doubtlessly tweaked it still is a high result
WIS 8, +4 competence bonus to Sense Motive -> because I can usually guess what people are hinting at before they finish the wordings, but I'm amazingly (and dangerously) unaware of my surroundings
CHA 12 -> because I don't just "mix up" in the crowd, but neither am I a leader nor would I like to be

N -> because I am True Neutral!
human -> because i can't "feel" any other race as my own
Wizard -> because I favour book-learning over practical skills
Arcane Devotee of Oghma -> because I believe inventions are what keep the world spinning (actually, Toril doesn't spin... oh well ;) )

edit: sorry, wrong number

CG Human Rog1/Mnk1/Wiz3 Worshipper of Tyr

Prone to selfish thievery in my youth, I trained (and taught) in the martial arts. As I matured, my outlook on life changed and I began to actively use my native intellect for the betterment of all and for the bringing of justice. (Insert severe religious experiences here)

I mentioned this on another thread, but there is a site where you can take a quick quiz and it will tell you which dnd character best suits you. Me? I am apparently a LG Elf Ranger/Cleric of Mielikki. I also came close to a Elf Ranger/Bard and a NG Human Cleric/Bard.
The Dusty Dustman

07-29-03, 11:51 PM
Elf Wizard

Strength 13 - above average but nothing spectacular
Dexterity 10 - Used to be around 16 but Dusty has gotten lazy
Constitution 15 - I have pretty good health 'nuff said
Intelligence 17 - I have been told many times that I am extremly intelligent by my teachers, friends, co-employees ect ct
Wisdom 12 - I can act a little brash at times but consider myself to be a good judge of moral character.
Charisma 6 - many people don't find psychotic goth guys attractive. Even I don't find myself good looking

My alignment would probably be true neutral because I don't feel about good or evil one way or the other. I have always been fond of the occult and have had a morbid fascination with death so Wee-Jas would suit me as a great deity to worship. Plus elves rule, hence my chosen race

I'd be a Human Monk 4 , True Neutral ( leaning strongly towards lawful , which masks the rules on being lawful as a monk ) Eldath would be my patron Deity and it could be possible that I've been raised by dwarves ( I have a strong commitment to familie , friends and community , I can hold my drinks , a big fan of ale , I'm a hard worker and a bit gruff with new people ). I'm a student of Aikido and traditional "soft" Karate ( mostly Kata ).
stats;

str. - 16 ( I'm a big guy and train every day )
dex. - 15 ( good hand eye coördination and agile )
con. - 16 ( I can hold my own )
int. - 11 ( average )
wis. - 15 ( spiritual and great insight , through meditating and live experiance this will grow )
cha. - 11 ( I'm the silent type , and don't make good first impressions )

I 'm more of cold environment person than a sun lover , so I would probably be living in the North.

Hmn... I suppose within the realm of physical possibility this would be me:

Steve Michael: human male, Expert 1; CR 1/2; Medium-size Human; HD 1d6-1; hp 5; Init +1; Spd 30 ft.; AC 11 (Dex +1), Touch 11, Flat-footed 10; Base Atk +0; Grp +0; Atk +0 melee/+1 ranged (1d4, 19-20/x2, kitchen utensil, branch, et cetera); Full Atk +0 melee/+1 ranged (1d4, 19-20/x2, kitchen utensil, branch, et cetera); Space/Reach: 5 ft./5 ft.; AL N (leans more toward the good aspect, but can be quite selfish at times); SV Fort -1, Ref +1, Will +3; Str 10, Dex 12, Con 9, Int 14, Wis 12, Cha 13.

Bedroll, waterskin.

Usually I wouldn't make an entire stat-block, but I've never written up a revised 3.5 stat-block so I decided to practice via this discussion.

If I did not have to conform to reality, I'd like to be this fellow:

Eamnonn Oathsidhe: male human Bard 1; CR 1; Medium-size human; HD 1d6+2; hp 8; Init +4; Spd 30 ft.; AC 17 (Dex +4, studded leather +3), Touch 14, Flat-footed 13; Base Atk +0; Grp +2; Atk +2 melee (1d6+2, 18-20/x2, rapier), +2 melee (1d3+2 (non-lethal damage), x2 crit, 15 ft. reach, whip), +2 melee/+4 ranged (1d4+2, 19-20/x2, 10 ft., dagger); Space/Reach: 5 ft./5 ft.; SQ Bardic Music (countersong, fascinate, inspire courage +1), Bardic Knowledge; AL NG; SV Fort +2, Ref +6, Will +4; Str 15, Dex 18, Con 14, Int 16, Wis 14, Cha 18.

He's my current and only character, haven't actually had the occasion to use him yet as I typically DM.

Hey, this is pretty fun. In all honesty, these would be my "ability scores:

STR 10 Average. No penalties or bonuses or anything.

DEX 8 Klutzy, but not hopeless.

CON 8 Asthmatic, allergic to everything (including chocolate! Argh!)

INT 18 Modesty aside, I perfected 2 IQ tests and "was" (still am) one of those super nerdy people growing up---think chess and debate team captain. Gross, I know.

WIS 12 Above average, but I can't say that I'm delightfully intuitive or anything like that. And once, I got suckered by an infomercial. Okay, I'm dropping that score to 10.

CHA 15 I get looks (I've been told :), so here's hoping) and I got my partner in life, quote "with my b****y wit that it made b****iness endearing."

Class(es)

Bard 10 (been in a choir and musical workshops since I was 4, plus can play the piano pretty well)
Loremaster 2 (Given, that I work at a library and am surrounded by people who love to play Trivial Pursuit.)

Alignment at Lawful Neutral.

Famder
Male Drow Vampire (I fit well in the drow mindset, and I'd have no problem giving myself up to undeath to increase my skills and longevity, I'd go lich if I could)
Class: Ftr lvl 14/Bbn lvl 2 (I have a reckless streak at time, but I'm great at assessing weaknesses when I'm focused)
(note that ability scores are without the vampire template added in, these are the base)
Str: 14
Dex: 17
Con: 16

Class: Bard. I dabble a bit in most things, but specialise in nothing.

Str: 8 - below average
Dex: 12 - a little above average
Con: 15 - fairly hardy, but not super-gnomely so
Int: 18 - almost a genius. This is offset however by...
Wis: 8 - ...my below average wisdom. Let's just say I'm one of the stupidest smart people I know.
Cha: 16 - there are very few people who I can't make like me, and even fewer who actively dislike me.

STR: 14 (good build, not cut though)
DEX: 21 (I dodge paintballs for practice)
CON: 16 ( I don't get sick often, and when I do, I beat it quick)
INT: 17 (Study ones opponents to understand them)

CHA: 11 (I am brash, honest and somewhat opinionated,

That, on the other hand, is a little ridiculous.

14str (Gnoll) - able to lift 175lb (80kg) over head, twice that (350lb/160kg) off the ground, and drag four times that (700lb/320kg). Wow.

21dex (An exceptionally dexterous astral deva)- need I comment?

16con (Griffon)- This I could let go, I know a lot of people who can shrug off damage, run for hours and never get sick.

17int (Beholder)- again, I could let it go. Admittedly, there is about a 0.05% chance of it being true, but that's still a chance.

16wis (Devourer)- This guy is cunning like a fox who graduated from the Cunning College with a PhD in Cunningness.

11char (Human) - only thing here is after admitting to being brash, opinionated and "no pretty boy", he's still at the higher end of the average scale.

Result: Spawn of a god? Superhuman? Deluded? All of the above? You decide; Next week, on The Extraordinary!

Ok, so that was rude. Someone had to say something though. You were all thinking it, you know you were!

Possessions: Phoebus wears a Kevlar breastplate, and a pair of PVS-14 night vision goggles [provide Darkvision to 100 feet, allow for general night-vision (terrain and features), and detect any minute light source to a range equal to normal Human daylight vision], and wields a M-4 carbine with bayonet, IR pointer and AimPoint scope (+1 missile bonus) attached (count as an Armour Piercing weapon of Distance [the latter power only at night] and provides NVG features—see above), five fragmentation grenades, and a Beretta 9mm pistol with silencer. For close in work, he wields a normal longsword. His Mk-7 laser range finder can calculate the distance to a target with its beam, up to 5 km away. Phoebus also wears a load-bearing vest, a hip holster for his pistol, a special rappelling belt (4,500lb tensile strength), and “Anarchy” sunglasses. He carries a small signal mirror, a pair of binoculars, a compass, two canteens (each with a five-use iodine kit), two ammunition pouches (each can hold five clips), 10 thirty-round magazines (300 rounds), 4 pistol magazines (52 rounds), and a Camelback hydration system (2 liters of water). In his Blackhawk backpack he carries 120 AA batteries, two pairs of combat boots, 50 feet of lightweight nylon rope, a GORTEX suit, a poncho and liner, a Mk-40 gas mask (provides immunity to gas attacks), two battle dress uniforms, 4 t-shirts, 6 pairs of socks, a hygiene kit, a sewing kit, a first-aid kit, a camouflage paint kit, a lighter, and 2 packs of Newport cigarettes. A separate bag carries his MC-1C parachute and reserve, air items, and a long leather ammunition belt holding two thousand rounds of 5.56mm; his belt-pouches hold 340gp in coins, and three 500gp emeralds. Phoebus rides on a fully equipped Griffon he calls Dolly; incidentally, she hauls most of his gear.

FOLLOWERS:
Phoebus’ “cohort” is his mount, Dolly the Griffon. Dolly is a mean- spirited nag, though she is always friendly toward her master.
Also, Phoebus has inadvertently gained an “honor guard” of sorts. Five young men decided to join him on his quests after he saved their village from Ogres. Phoebus has equipped and armed them with items bearing the “All-American” patch with the Airborne tab that they identify as their leader’s heraldry.

May be late to post but here's my 2 cents: All this thread does is pander to people's self-deceit. Not intending to level accusations at only those who I cite as examples but one poster justified his strength as 16 because (to paraphrase) "I'm strong but not body-builder strong". Another cites his Int as 17 because of his I.Q. of 149 which he himself throws doubt on! Let me explain where I'm coming from: on the 3-18 scale, an 18 is the maximum humanly possible! In the 2nd. ed. PHB there is a list that attempts to quantify these scores (pp. 15); it states that an Int of 17 or 18 is of 'genius' level equating to 'intellectual brilliance'. On the _exact_ same scale, someone with 16 strength would be at the top end of 'exceptionally strong'. Merely being a body-builder wouldn't at all mean the person was an 18 (which equates to the likes of Magnus Ver Magnuson, 20 stone plus, triple 'World's strongest man' title winner or 6'7", 26 stone, bar-bending, caber-tossing, truck-hauling Geoff Capes. To try to find out one's own 'real world' scores should be to put one's characters in perspective and see them as the truly awesome figures they are. This would help place the likes of Drizzt in _their_ proper perspective. Instead I've seen posts here about Drizzt being 'too weak'! Think: Carl Lewis runs and leaps 28 ft. He was a quadruple gold medal winning Olympian (at one games!) and the fastest man on earth; surely an 18 dex. if ever there was one (speed being one facet of dex.) Now imgine Drizzt with his 20 Dex.
Further: I was a competitive athlete for 14 years at amateur level 9though I've had experience against professionals). I consider myself very strong because I've out performed countless other guys in various gyms across our county. At my peak I weighed 9 st. 4 lbs. which, if you examine the bodyweight compared to weight lifted by the _greatest_ weightlifters, is approx. the weight of the strongest athletes 'pound for pound'. And yet I can bearly bench press 40kgs. If you compare this to the weight allowance tables in the PHB my strength score (one of my best attributes) would make a measly 11-12! Thus, while perhaps being quite a big fish in a tiny pond among normal people, _for an adventurer_ I would be average! Note that the 2nd ed. rules cite the Guiness book of records as one of their reference works in drawing up the attribute tables (str. max.press. pp.13).
I believe the first poster rated his own Wis. as 20! Come on! More wise than can possibly be imagined by _any_ human standards?
Hehe. So my own scores would probably be (and I flatter myself) Str. 11, Int. 13, Wis, 13, Dex. 12, Con. 7, Ch. 10 Most players would think such a PC worthless.
Hardly worth bothering to post 'em. Yet I don't think I'm worthless. I think Samwise Gamgee is the most heroic of all the characters in The Lord of the Rings. My point: keep it in perspective and make your PC's _character_ the primary element, not his numbers.

I have to say I agree with Keldor about the thing that sometimes the stats do get out of perspective. There are two types persons,
The other, who think they have extremely good stats without a proper reason and others who are more conservative about their opinions.

Anyway, I think this is meant to be fun :), so here is mine:

Str 7 (Not really interested in this)
Dex 10 (Been more agile earlier, but now...)
Con 13 (I have practiced this somewhat)
Int 18 (Yes, according official IQ test)
Wis 14 (It always seems to me other people are doing things weirdly...)
Cha 11 (I like to be on the crowd, not as leader)

AL: LG (Yes, I think it is rather rare too...)
Class: Expert 2 (I think I have gained the second level by now)
Race: Human
Gender: Male

Hey, I'd just like to point out that the majority of posters have high Intelligence scores---which I guess lends to the D&D player's stereotype (i.e., the Nerd who Dreams).

I'm in agreement with keldor: the assessments do fall under his two categories.

Still, I do believe real brilliance is out there...and somehow we've amassed the majority of it. bwahahahhahahahahahahahahaha! (Lightning flashes, thunder roars and steam explodes from the earth in the background.)

I didn't intend it but I'm getting drawn into this (maybe if I had a higher wisdom score, I would be able to resist)!
Firstly I know it's meant to be fun.
However...! Errr...shouldn't that be "According _to_ [an] official I.Q. test." :) Besides, regardless what your I.Q. test score showed, you surely appreciate (with your 18 Int.!) that claiming this is the equivalent of claiming to being as intelligent as, for example, Einstein or Hawking? Do you really think that those who know you speak of you as 'brilliant'? More to my point, would a 'very wise' person (14 wis) make such a claim? :) -Sigh- a thread like this is really an excuse to brag, no?

Yes, I can't help to answer Keldor now that it seems he is also interested in the topic.

Yes "According to [an] official I.Q. test" is correct, you are right. English was actually the third language I learned, so I have not the perfect language skill in that.

The idea behind Int18 is following. I was in I.Q. test and scored 169. The test also said that only 0.2% of people has as high or higher I.Q. than that. It means every 500 person I meet has higher or similar I.Q. than that. With 3d6 you get one 18 in 216 throws. So it could be said I have Int of 18, right??

I do not feel as bright as Einstein. I think he put his 4th and 8th Expert level points to Int gaining it to be 20 in the end. Also his profession(physicist) probably had quite a many ranks in it. I must admit the ideas behind 'Theory of Relativity' is quite difficult to me.

I see the problem as a measurement problem. I guess one could measure Int like I did above. One could maybe also say something similar with strength comparing to 'Worlds strongest man'. In the end the one making the measurement is the person under the measurement. You can not gain valid data from that.

It is funny to see also, that there are many posts with high Cha scores in them. This would mean D&D is the game for the charismatic and intelligent persons?

Bragging? Me?!? Yes, I must admit a bit. Just a tiny bit though. It is hard to resist :).

Okay, please don't take this personally but I'll use your input to further illustrate my point. Why? Well, for one reason, because so many on these boards claim that DnD is the game of intelligent people. This thread almost made me start a new thread asking who knows the difference between wisdom and intelligence because clearly many of you don't.

I repeat: 18 is the most possible (in 2nd ed. at least - God knows how some people give themselves 21 Dex. et al.). To make any sense of your 18 str. you would have to give us your body weight. Then we would be able to compare your weightlifting achievements with those of ratified professionals - without this, it's all just hot air. I would say that clearly you are very strong - but I've followed strength competitions for at least 20 years and I've seen many, many guys who were also had massive lifts to their credit but who nontheless came nowhere against Magnus Ver Magnuson. I mean he absolutely p**sed on the majority of them! Only a couple of guys were in contention with him. Now as an AD&D player all through my interest in strength competitions I was always thinking about the scores these guys would have and it simply stands to reason that the also-rans must be in the 17 and 16 range. It would be more appropriate actually, to give yourself an exceptioanl str. percentage i.e. world's strongest man = 18 (100), compare with Minsc (Baldur's gate PC game 18 (94 or so)), the worlds 2nd strongest man perhaps 18 (98), Britain's strongest man maybe 17 or 18 (01) - I say this because Glen Ross (3x Britain's strongest man easily won against his competition but was equally easily beaten at world level). Do you get my drift here? I'm not meaning to burst your bubble but for you to even approach a Magnus V. Magnusson you would have to at least be the strongest man in your state (if you're an American) or your nation if you aren't!

Your Dex: 15 equates to: 'very dexterous'. As I've said, if it isn't to read like nothing more than someone bragging, a score must be _quantified_. Post some times for how fast you are. If you don't know them, you aren't that fast since anyone of such high talent as to scaore 14+ in Dex. would have been recognised at school level. Compare to world althetics scores - Daley Thompson posted 10.9s for 100m at age 16 and 10.2 at his peak. I consider myself able to beat most guys for speed but I scored myself a 13 I think - with a 100m time of 12s. This equates to the blinding speed of a snail compared to professioanl atheletes - which is what adventurers are like (indeed, adventurers are potentially epically heroic figures who one can allow a degree of artistic licence for - see Conan books).
Cons: Many here seem unaware that constitution is more than health; it is equally _fitness_. How many times you've been in hospital is only one thing. How long you can hold your breath for, how far you can run in 'X' time, how quick you recover from physical excertion, Max. heart rate, etc. NOTE: age is vital here i.e. an older guy with 'poorer' stats may actually be the fitter man. Saying, "I heal 'real quick' " is meaningless.
Wis: "Know thyself". If it was this easy, everyone would be wise. Who _couldn't_ have scored themselves highly and typed 'know thyself'? To prove one's wisdom you'd need to be saying whether you ever took the advice of someone older than yourself who had done something stupid that you were about to do, and advised you against it - most people like to make their own mistakes - even if they've been made a thousand times before them by others i.e. most people lack wisdom. Tell us if you smoke or not - if yes - you aren't as wise as you think you are i.e. would you put sugar in your car engine? Of course not, it would ruin it. Yet the same person would put tar and carbon monoxide into his body _despite_ being fully aware that it 'ruins' his body! Tell us if you ever had unprotected sex or not; ever bungee jumped, been led by peer pressure, tried to cross a busy road without using the correct crossing point, driven without a seatbelt etc. etc. Do you _really_ learn from your mistakes? These are the kinds of things against which to measure wisdom.
Char. So the ladies love you, do they? Sorry but we'd need the amount of lovers you've actually had - not counting those who were under the influence of alcohol! Natural leader? Sorry but we'd need to know what position you hold in employment not whether your mates push you into the office everytime there's an issue to raise with management!

Further to my own previous post! Please everyone, don't let 'lil me stop you from taking part in the thread but I think the truth is this: we all have our talents but very few of us would make adventurers! A simple example: no matter what your personal attributes, when a person is confronted by danger there is one of three AUTOMATIC responses which we take; which one we take is determined genetically. They are: Freeze, Fight or Flight. If you don't fall in the 'fight' category, you're gonna find it hard to be an adventurer!

To Keldor: I'm sorry but I disagree on a couple of your statements. First of all , I think you'll have to look at the meaning of the word "adventurer". Being a combatent doesn't make you an adventurer , for instance a traveller who seeks new thing is also seen as an adventurer. As for the reaction in dangerous or stressfull situations , their are a multitude of different actions a person makes and they differ per situation. This does not have to be genetic , but pure instinctive behavior. Fear is one factor , wisdom another , pride can be one and there are many others.
Non- violence is in my eyes the biggest courage one can show !

To Keldor: I also agree we should all be either Experts, Commoners or Aristocrats. There are no real battle adventures nowadays. We study, go to work, that's about it. Maybe a person, who travels a lot and seeks always new places might be called adventurer. He might even have a few Bard levels, but that's about it.

But on the other hand I really don't want to ruin anyones pleasure making himself look like a great adventurer. It might not be that realistic, but it is fun.

But when it comes to measuring oneself, if one wants really good data about a person, there should be a big group of persons doing similar tasks and then statistics made of them. Then you would have a good comparison between different persons and a new person might be defined objectively. Unfortunately this means a lot of work... I would love to read my results, though.

I went though a test and found out that I was a lawful evil human mage with bard as a possible secondary class. I.Q. is a measure of one's intelligence _potential_. Clearly many here think that because they passed a Mensa test, they automatically must have an 18 Int. Not true. A native dragged out of the deepest part of the Amazonion jungle could have a 200+ I.Q. and be less knowledgable than a 10 year from the developed world. There is no guarantee that Einstein or Hawking etc. even had particularly high I.Q.s. though clearly they had at least average intelligence. What they had they used very well. If your friends and (perhaps more importantly) colleagues don't consider you 'brilliant' then the chances are, you haven't got an 18. This is my whole point. Adventurers are much much much better than normal folk. To a normal person (from lowly peasant to lord mayor of a large city), the humble first level wizard would be a figure of terrifyingly mysterious power who knows things they couldn't hope to even begin to comprehend; and _he_ himself is the equivalent of your common or garden Phd graduate about to start some _real_ work.

Yes, they _are_ writing 'what they would be' and I have taken the stance that it might be more appropriate to make it 'what would I _like_ to be' or 'what do I see myself as being _if_ my personal attributes were actually comparable to those of adventurers'. I really think my central point that people often have difficulty in realistically comparing real world facts and feats to those of the AD&D world is valid; and my own personal agenda of the moment is to work in support of _truth_. I happen to currently be reading about the psychology of deceit and _self-deceit_ is prevalent in this thread. _Outside of this thread_, I'm interested in the validity of such self-deceit and certainly trying to erradicate it in myself. Don't you agree that 'bragging' about having, for example, 18 int. if you haven't (or if you have for that matter) is _arrogance_? Isn't arrogance unnattractive? Am I not then being altruistic when I try, to the best of my ability, to draw attention to this concept?
Forgive me if I don't act like/think like all others partaking in the thread. Everyone who takes part takes the risk of having their comments reflected upon by others. I don't mean to break up anyone's fun and said so.

Kelidor's attitude makes me think of him as the "wisdom behind the throne". I'd have to agree with him on most of the points he made though. Everyone I've ever played D&D thought that 12 was "below average" which I hated to hear. They just wanted the statistics when the ability scores only one part of the character. I think most characters should have around a +6 when their ability bonuses are added up, not a 9-13. Even if you have deific stats they barely help you when you get to the higher end of the game where your class abilities and skill points are what really make the difference. I'm not one to let all the fun escape so here's me, not as a hero, just me.

And it's not self deceite when they put an 18 for one of their stats. It just means they don't understand how powerful that number should be, so they can't really be decieving themselves without knowing that first.

Ohh ooh! On the matter of alignment tests: I noticed that some people feel its innacurate. Well I would say this: being selfish and greedy are very common traits in people and both are traits of evil people (though they aren't inherently evil per se). The difference is that in AD&D we tend to assume that evil characters _know_ they are evil. This is not necessarily true; indeed I would suggest it is downright rare.
Many people also make the mistake of thinking that they are good because they don't do evil things. This is a mistake. Being good comes from _doing_ good deeds (as being evil comes from doing evil deeds). Since greed and selfishness are the 'default' setting for all evil people, being generous and thinking of others' needs isn't enough to make one good - one must _do_ for others and give over and above one's own needs, to be good. Thus, while many people may not be 'evil', neither are they 'good'. I found this quite a scary discovery because I liked to think of myself as 'good'.
So for the record, most people fall between lawful/true neutral and lawful/neutral evil.
One example is how most people hate paying taxes. I love paying taxes. I realise they pay for the society we want - the street lighting, the sewerage systems, the picking up of litter and road kill, the welfare system (where such exists), road repairs, and countless other things. Yet if a politician talks of raising taxes people grumble. They want more in their _own_ pockets. Greed. Starving millions in the world and people in the first world resent paying taxes (much of which is spent in overseas aid)!

AD&D is great for drawing attention to concepts like good vs. evil.

I was judged LN. But despite what Keldor said, I still believe the test to be inaccurate. Not because of the good/evil axis (I'm not "good" enough to sacrifice myself for others, nor do I enjoy or ignore others' suffering) but because of the law/chaos one. Do you want to know the most important factor in making me LN instead of N? The fact that I'd like to have a dog familiar. Since a dog is the common symbol of faithfulness and obedience, the test designer gave to that choice a LARGE weight toward the "law" end of the scale. Of course, they didn't know that I own (in RL) a dog who is as CN as any slaad, nor that I would choose a dog familiar for this reason; but they could have figured out that such situations would happen. IMO, they should have sticked to "if you were in this situation, what would you do?" questions: I believe they are the best (or the least bad) choices for alignment tests.

He he. This could get really interesting now!
Do you stand in queues kedi, or just stroll to the front? Lawful people wait in line. I bet you do too. Seeing oneself as 'free' and actually behaving without restraint are different things. Chaotic people are seriously anarchic. You may hate traditions but still follow them i.e. honour peoples' weddings, buy birthday gifts etc. I bet you're happy to _accept_ birthday gifts! This is a tradition! You say you hate laws but would you really prefer not to have any? How would you feel if someone decided to march into your home and eat your food, take your possessions, your bed etc.? What if someone wanted your money? There would be nothing to stop someone raping your sister or mother or wife...or you even! If you tried to stop something you didn't like, you would be at the mercy of your own weaknesses i.e. unless you are more powerful than everyone who might commit such a deed, you're going to get beaten up or killed. Etc. etc. etc. If you don't think people would behave so cruelly or wantonly, you'd be mistaken.

When I mentioned the alignment test I wasn't commenting on its accuracy (I haven't seen it!) but on the fact that even AD&D players often don't fully understand the concept and so, if asked the age old question (among players) - what alignment are you? - they tend to think they are more good than they really are (or less evil/selfish/greedy). One reason for this is that on paper, many alignments e.g. chaotic good, seem more 'cool' than the 'goody-goody' LG when if you think about it deeply enough, you'll see that even little things in life (like how we deal with queues) can become problematic.

Ideally alignment should be really closely considered - it makes every little thing in a roleplaying situation potentially fascinating. It's hard work though.

keldor, it seems that we're natural born rivals :D

whateverr, let me talk about myself:

I hate lines, I often don't wait on lines, I always argue with my teachers because they always say what to do even if they aren't authorized, I'm no good with polices, had a few argument with them, I made a metal sign when I was taking a picture with the president, went to discipline ten times at junior year in my first school, I had a discipline punishment two years before, I escaped from classs several times, usually take some pencils from my frinds without asking, I usually say "I hate it" when I got a bad present, but everybody loves taking something, that doesn't make you lawful. Being a chaotic doesn't requiere to do nothing when someone tries to steal money or rapes your mother, you do whater you like in this time, protecting your sister, your mother or yourself doesn't make you lawful, that makes you good, but I'm neither, I'm balanced, I can steal a pencil or beat up who steals. I wore a sports pants, a metal t-shirt and trainers in a wedding

I'm Maniac, anarchist and chaotic, get used to it,
psychologically maniac

", I escaped from classs several times"

Looks like you misunderstood what going to school was about if you thought it was something to escape from.

"usually take some pencils from my frinds without asking"

You've got friends? How do you know? I mean, how does a maniac, chaotic anarchist define a 'friend'?

"I usually say "I hate it" when I got a bad present, but everybody loves taking something, that doesn't make you lawful"

Not everybody loves taking something. I for one have something of a problem receiving gifts; some see themselves as being 'bought off' in certain circumstances; in others, a 'gift' may make one feel obligated in some way.

"...but everybody loves taking something, that doesn't make you lawful"

You missed my point entirely. I was refering to your having said that you hate traditions; my point was that if you accept birthday gifts you are being hypocritical i.e. 'hating' the tradition of giving presents to celebrate a birthday when it's someone else's birthday but being happy to take presents on your _own_ - regardless of your 'hatred of traditions'. If you truly hated traditions you would have nothing to do with any of them, even if they benefited you. And following traditions _is_ a typically Lawful phenomenon; Lawful = not only legal type laws but also general order and organisation. Doing something the way it has always been done i.e. tradition, is, therefore, ordered i.e. Lawful.

"Being a chaotic doesn't requiere to do nothing when someone tries to steal money or rapes your mother..."

Again, you missed my point entirely. You said you 'hate laws'; I was asking you if you had considered a world without laws. You sound like precisely the sort of person who wants laws when they serve your needs and doesn't want them when they don't. How would you feel if you chose to drive while drunk and killed your own child because you lost control of the vehicle? The laws are there not only to protect others from the likes of you but to protect the likes of you from yourself!

"protecting your sister, your mother or yourself doesn't make you lawful, that makes you good,..."

Wrong! Protecting your sister or your mother doesn't necessarily make you good at all. If you are protecting them simply because it suits _your_ needs, you are only being selfish. Only by fighting to protect someone in whom you had no personal interest could you argue you were doing anything 'good'. Your argument would be the same as a foxhunter arguing that killing foxes is 'good' because farmers think they are vermin that need to be killed - when in fact the fox hunter doesn't care a toss about the farmer - he only enjoys killing foxes!

"I'm Maniac, anarchist and chaotic, get used to it"

No - and I'm damn glad I don't have to. We'll continue to lock your type up for the good of society.

I can't deny I love this argument :D

Anyway, I really do hate laws simple they aren't enough, there is no real democrasy or justice or republic. That's what I hate,

My friends? you gotta see them, they are over-maniac, nearly nuts, more than me, I'm the most wise among them

And who said that C people never obeys order? it'd be very hard to disobey evry single law, tradition, he obeys rules at times, but he is mostly disobey, that is CN.

And I'm not harmfull to people, don't you fear me :D I'm friendly and helpfull mostly.

I don't think Chaotic good would be quite the "Complete Freedom" type. I think it's closer to "I'm willing to break the law to do what's right" and "I don't go with the flow".

As such, a CG character would obey laws, but wouldn't hesitate to break them to save someones life, stop a crime, ect.

Since ES (you all know ES, don't you?... E'tii'stil Shadowsil) is too much of a coward to post stats on himself. I have deinged to do so.

This is based on what I know of him via social functions, email, and whanot.

Disclaimer: the stats may or may not be true (you decide). :D I'm being realistic. You guys on the other hand are not. I mean, c'mon, you people have above par ability scores! Either we are attracting the cream of the crop... or you are all lying.

Str 10 (Physically average)
Dex 13 (Ambidextrous)
Con 8 (Constitution average)
Int 15 (Quite intelligent, slightly below genius level... however, only when he applies himself)
Wis 8 (Average)
Cha 13 (Extremely handsome, however is antisocial, likes to read and write novels)

Alignment: Neutral angsty (with lawful and chaotic good tendencies)
Race: Based on his physical appearance, I would say half-elf. (Real race: Chinese-French-Canadian-French, mixed, mixed, mixed blood)
Class and levels:  Most likely Expert with skills in Profession (procrastinator) +8, Profession (statistics creator) +6, Profession (daydreamer) +8, Profession (running away from the hordes of females) +priceless (he is not gay, he just finds it uncomfortable to be at the centre of attention).

Kedi: My alignment is probably LN but possibly quite close to true nuetral (which surprises me somewhat). I'm usually VERY lawful - I certainly believe that laws are a necessity. In fact, as the population grows and society gets more complex and crowded, there will inevitably be a need for greater, more 'restrictive' legislation. Having said that, I have broken laws and feel a strong compulsion (which I am working to eradicate) to inflict violence on people who break laws that cause offense to others or (in particular) actually endanger or harm others. Since this would be vigilanteism, which is illegal, to do so would swing my alignment towards nuetral. I would prefer to be LG but since, as I've said, being good is not about _believing_ good but actually _doing_ good, I must admit I probably fall short. I have tried to donate bone marrow and blood but I was refused on both counts! :( I'm inclined from time to time to pick up broken glass from the street. From my flat window I saw a kid struggling with his bycicle chain and went outside to put it back on for him. Hardly qualifies me as good though, I'm sad to say. Must try harder! Also, I once stole some books in a personal experiment in ethics. Clearly I am capable of breaking laws...and there is an argument that a man can be immoral _and_ remain a man (and not an animal (see my sig.)) but I haven't clarified it in my mind yet (or read the answer in the works of real philosophers). I find the whole subject fascinating. I'm inclined to think that the highly intelligent man is 'entitled' to see himself as 'above the law' - as long as he understands 'enough' about the concept of morality i.e. that there is no such thing as 'good' and 'bad', only different points of view.

By the way - I'm still interested to know how you define 'friend'. :)
