| Adamaro2302-22-07, 09:07 PM | What's a good FR novel to begin with? so far these are my choices: The Finder's Stone Trilogy The Avatar Trilogy The Moonshae Trilogy The Dark Elf Trilogy Spellfire City of Ravens Personally i don't want to read the "Drizzt Legend", so those ones will be the last i read. I hate drow, drizzt (because he's so popular!!), and the underdark. |
| MerrikCale02-22-07, 11:38 PM | well before this thread gets closed for talking about novels, I would say easily is the dark elf trilogy but it may be the least "important". I enjoyed City of Ravens as well. You could try Elaine Cunninghams Song & Swords books or RAS's Cleric Quintet, which are both at the top in my mind. Spellfire and the Avatar Trilogy are big for the realms but I did not enjoy them at all. |

I've seen no better answer than this from The Hooded One, one of the players in Ed's campaign:. . . I would recommend the following books to get a grounding in the breadth of FR fiction: Ed Greenwood: Spellfire, Elminster: The Making Of A Mage, Elminster's Daughter, Swords of Eveningstar Ed Greenwood & Jeff Grubb: Cormyr A Novel Ed Greenwood & Elaine Cunningham: City of Splendors Jeff Grubb & Kate Novak: Azure Bonds Elaine Cunningham: Elfshadow, Evermeet Bob (R.A.) Salvatore: Homeland lots o' folks: Halls of Stormweather Then I'd stop, take a breather, and consider Paul Kemp's Erevis Cale trilogy and Blackstaff by Steven Schend. Then back to Elaine . . . Then I'd take stock of who I liked, of the above titles, and go from there in reading their other works, each series in order of course (we scribes can help).Swords of Eveningstar would be my first choice for a first novel, with Spellfire close behind. |

Of course, I could tell you that I thought Spellfire, any Elminster book, Elminster's daughter, and Cormyr were god awful. But that would violating the ban on talking about novels so I won't do it. |

I kept falling asleep, I never got passed the second or third chapter. Elminster in Hell was good though... except the part in the end... you know... when he LIVED. :rolleye2: ;) |

I have not yet read the Swords of Eveningstar, but I will try it. |
