Who are these characters? [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-17-04, 05:21 PM I just noticed that the characters on the cover of the forthcoming Ancient Empires are the same characters that appeared in several illustration in City of the Spider Queen.

I'm not positive but I think they also appear on the cover to the Players Guide to Faerun and Underdark. I never really gave it much thought but now I'm curious. Are these characters written up anywhere? Probably not but perhaps the powers that be could give us some background on these guys. They seem very well developed and extremely interesting. Anyone notice the paladin's (?) floating shield? Cool stuff.

Look through the art galleries for examples of the artwork. CotSQ has quite a few illustrations of the party in question.

08-17-04, 08:07 PM They are iconic characters. They are characters used in the artwork, sort of like a template. They use these chaarcters in most of the art to sort of give the impression of an adventuring party in many situations and not putting ner characters in every shot, lets you get to know the characters somewhat.

They do the same thing in the core books with characters like Regdar and Mialee

08-17-04, 08:19 PM yea, but Ragdar and Liddy have statlines, and stories.. do these characters have them? (also, Players Guide to Faerun has the same people as Ancient Empires but missing the dark/black guy, but Underdark has only has the elf)

They may sometime in the future get novels of their own if WoTC decides to give them some. I personally didnt like the Iconic core character novels at all, I found them short and dull so If they do come out with novels for these characters, I hope they will be in true FR Novel fashion

08-18-04, 02:08 PM Those are not just merely iconic characters. The elf is Araevin, and he is the main character of Forsaken House, the new novel by Rich Baker; there is also a brief mention of another character from the illustrations, but I won't spoil that by mentioning the name here.

Who may be on the backside of the book :)

I like iconic characters. I especially liked what they did in Underdark - it really gave me the impression these people were having an adventure down there.

I just picked that book up actually. Havent read it yet but thats cool, seems like a good book. Didnt really recognize him until you mentioned it.

08-18-04, 09:27 PM It's always a joy when there's continuity in the artwork. The Return to the Tomb of Horrors' module book has artwork detailing an ongoing campaign with the same characters throughout the book. You see how each of them die, and the last three survivors toast to their fallen comrades, the faces of the deceased surrounding them like memories. :bigeyes:

08-19-04, 07:45 AM Still 2E. I'm running it now in 3.5, in conjunction with the Incursion info from Dragon 309 and Dungeon 100.

08-19-04, 08:53 PM On a slight tangent, who are the adventurers on the DMG screen? I assume they are iconic characters, but seeing them dead on the final panel of the screen leads me to question. It's not often that you see the "good guys" lose in a published piece.
