who do you think would be the best actresses to play the 7 sister, if by some small chance they made a movie about them?

Lets see...

the Simbul: Kristen Cloke (played Laura Means on Millennium) http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0167028/

Qilue: Halle Berry http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000932/

Alustriel - AJ Cook http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0176882/

Dove - Hudson Leick http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0500098/

And even though I eschew big named actors (save Halle Berry) for this sort of thing (I think it would take away from what makes the realms what they are), Sean Connery as Elminster.

I'd have to give some thought to the rest...

Heya,

who do you think would be the best actresses to play the 7 sister, if by some small chance they made a movie about them?

Any answers you'd get would be highly subjective...

But for my 2 coppers worth: no one currently of note.

That's right. I don't think there's anyone out there capable of doing justice to my vision of the Seven.

Qilue: Halle Berry http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000932/

As much as I am very very fond of Halle Berry as an actress, she's too short (Qilue is 6').

I know you've probably mentioned her because she's a black actress, but drow aren't that kind of black. :) (If you've seen anything I've written on the issue lately, you'll know that drow are best compared to the shade black (black - as in absorbs all spectrums of light), rather than the colours red-black or blue-black.)

Dove - Hudson Leick http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0500098/

Like her sister Storm, Dove is a big girl (I'm talking tall and muscular, unlike Qilue who is likely tall and slender). Hudson is too slender and too short, and to me, she never was a convincing warrior type in Xena (she did lunatic/madwoman very well, though). If you want to take an actress from Xena, try Lucy Lawless as either Storm or Dove. Personally I wouldn't cast her as either, either.

the Simbul: Kristen Cloke (played Laura Means on Millennium) http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0167028/

Alustriel - AJ Cook http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0176882/

I don't know A J Cook or Kristen Cloke (and there's no photos of the latter at IMDB), so I don't really have anything to say about them, but AJ doesn't look Alustriel enough to me. :) (To the OP: See what I mean by subjective?)

I brought this up in the other thread where people were answering this same question. I whole-heartedly agree that casting a black actress is the absolute worst thing you could do for a drow. Drow are not dark brown in color, they are pitch black. Casting a dark-skinned actress would just basically confuse people who already are not sure just how drow are supposed to look and also be sort of racist. Drow have no resemblance at all to humans with african descent. To best portray a drow, you'd be best to pick a very dainty actress with sharp features. There are plenty of beautiful black actresses out there, but casting them as a drow would just be wrong. But also, for Qilue, you'd have to pick someone rather tall.

As for the other sisters, eh, you could cast basically anyone. Their art changes from book to book and each game generation has them appearing a bit differently. You have their general height and features, but not many can picture in their head just how each one would look entirely. You just gotta get the height and hair color down and you're pretty set. Poor Qilue would be the hardest though. I imagine to pull off a drow in a movie appearance-wise, you'd probably have to do like a lot of artists and make her dark grey. Unless you can put her in good lighting so pitch black comes off ok. But she'd be so hard to do in a live-action movie.

Someone over on the Dark Sun boards posted a thread about who would be good to play the main characters in a Dark Sun movie, and I'll give the same answer here:

I wouldn't even consider live-action for any more DnD movies, lest we get another hack-job that was DnD: the movie. I sat in the theater in utter horror watching as my favorite game was being butchered systematically with every passing minute. Coutney Solomon was a self-professed DnD fanatic and yet he knew absolutely NOTHING about the subject matter. I'd hate to see another travesty like that continue, especially with an established world like FR or Dark Sun. The knowledge that a sequel is in the works curls my spine to say the least.

If another DnD movie was made, I say do it like Scourge of Worlds- animate it and go with big name voices. Just no more Wayans Bros., please.

I agree the I can not think of anyone to act the parts correctly, but that could be due to my relitivly small nolve experiance.

Now about a real Drow in the movies. How could this be any harder to portray than it was to portray Mystique in the X-men movies? All it takes is some good air brush paintr and an artist that knows the medium. I am only a passiable artist an have a terible air brush and noit the best paint for the job,but I pulled off the Black Orc that killed Borimir last year and this year I was Shrek.

For a really cool drow follow these simple steps:

1. Grab Mila Jovovich, somehow convince her to play the part.

2. Give her the pointed ears.

3. Spray her jet black.

4. Whack some red contacts into her beautiful eyeballs.

5. Make her read all the "Drow" novels.

6. Tell her to act like a nasty-sadistic-sexist-evil-cow-with a superiority complex.

7. Let her pick her own Drow name.

8. Give her some well crafted weapons and armour.

9. Give her a cat-sized animatronic spider to pet.

Drow could definitely be done. The technology of wardrobe and make up has improved out of sight in the last couple of decades... We have seen the results quite spectacularly in movies like the LotR trilogy, and the upcoming Chronicles of Narnia looks out of this world.

The thing is, someone suggested a black actress to play Qilue because she's "black"... But Drow aren't brown, they're a shiny pitch black... In my opinion, since Elves are very much a European/British idea and Elves themselves don't share the skeletal structure of negro stock (they don't exactly fit caucasian, either, but caucasian is closer - asian would be best, but asians tend to be shorter* and Qilue is 6' which is quite tall for a woman (and extremely tall for a Drow!)), it would be far better to cast a caucasian and use makeup, than it would to cast a negro and use make up (because you'd have to do it in either case). I am not being racist here, though I'm sure some people might say that I am.

*Note: Asians can be tall. The trick is to find an actress tall enough to play Qilue with the talent to pull it off. :) I'm sure they do exist, but probably not anyone currently on the A-list (but I can't claim to be an expert).

Hey! lets play the (slightly dodgy and un-pc) selective breeding/fantasy gene splice game! :D
Weeeeee, here goes!

The closest thing to an "elven facial look" is probs a tall, mixed race Chinese/Scandanavien supermodel, like a tall, slim version of Bjork mixed with Mila Jovovich and Zhang Ziyi or something? Then give the result a pretty costume made by the LOTR costume people, a nice flaxen-haired wig, sparkling exotic coloured contact lens and pointy ears.

I always thought Cher looked kind of elfy (facewise) as well.

As for males I would splice the lead singer from the Dandy Warhols with Jonny Depp and the androdgynous villian from the Stargate film and then apply all the costume bits. Maybe add a splash of Marc Dacascos and Brandon Lee as well (fantasy remember).

Oooo, we could put them all on a secret island like Lost and force them all to breed until elves are real, all they are allowed to do is listen to enya and claanad all day long!

To keep in shape these "elves" would have to become gym going-vegeterian-chainsmokers until the film was done shooting.

As for tall actresses: Remember that the actors playing the hobbits in LotR aren't really 3 feet tall. The same technology that made them small can make actresses taller, so I don't think height is a real problem unless you have a small budget.
And none of us would want a FR movie made on a smaller budget than LotR. :D

Or the female Headmistres of that one Acedemy outta Potter ;) - Either way, point is got. Plus, there is a THIRD DnD Movie for TV (Second really, I don't coinsder that sickening one to be) at some point on SciFi.

And, I think Seven Sisters movie would be one of the best movies you could do. I've said this over and over. You have Seven 'young' females, young girls can look at and go "ooh..." over. They're all beautiful, but they all have great problems, great responsibilites they must do day in and day out. They love, hate, care and regret. Soemthing most young girls (and women) can relate to daily. Thats what the sisters put up with emotionaly, then, for a female to see another female leading a group, a city, a country, you know it just makes the "Oooh!" moreso ;)

But, I don't know if Ed would take that chance with his Sisters unless HE had just as much control as the Director, and, the director was his choice ;) (Not that I'm speaking for Ed, but that is what I would do and could presume he would want the same.)

I was gonna reply first, but didn't have time. So I was hoping you'd answer it for me Zandilar, which you did exactly how I would have =).

I pretty much agree with everything you said. The hardest part for Qilue would be finding the height and the look together. You can of course use tricks to make someone taller, but it's more difficult when you're just adding 6 inches to 1 foot, instead of like 2-3 feet. Qilue is so strange because she is not only very beautiful and delicate, of a race normally small, so it's easier to find more short, petite women to fill the role, but she's also strong and pretty well muscled. So you need to find a somewhat dainty, but muscular and tall actress all at the same time, which tends to have part asian/part caucasion features. A very difficult feat indeed.

The problem with most castings like this, most directors don't have the time or desire to go through tons and tons of people until they find the perfect fit that can also act, so they usually settle. I remember watching something on the making of Fellowship of the Ring where one of the people in charge of casting needed people to audition for the parts of the various elf extras. They basically were only able to choose from people there in New Zealand and put out a call for all tall, attractive people to audition for the part of elves. They said they were amazed at how many ugly people they had to go through. This isn't trying to be insulting, but I always thought this was kinda funny. And this of course would be much of what they'd have to go through. It's so hard casting elves, let alone dark elves. I'm sure the director would eventually just settle and I would be dissappointed. If I was in charge though, I'm sure I'd have my funding stripped after I spent 6 months searching for the perfect Qilue lol.

Ack. I went and checked that out. No theatrical release. Straight to video. No hype anywhere. The IMDB message boards said it blew chunks. Does not bode well. Yep, certainly they should make no more DnD movies, if for no other reason than to spare the fans. At least animate it, and research this stuff! Has anyone here that's bashing Wrath of the Dragon God, actually SEEN it?

Compared to the first one, it's a cinematic masterpiece. I know that's not saying much, but the plot this time is much more credible, and is based heavily on either the writer or the producer's personal campaign. From what I've heard about it, the actors involved were actually keeping PHBs on set to refer to at some points, and it's got a LOT of references to classic D&D. Many of those references won't even be picked up by more recent players. (The most notable of those is when it's mentioned that one of the characters has adventured in the Ghost Tower of Inverness.)

All things considered, they really did their homework on this one, compared to the first one, and it's not a bad way to spend a couple hours. It's pretty standard "made for TV" fare as far as the special effects go, but I wasn't appalled at the travesty like I was the first one.

Now, to actually go back on topic, I agree that Qilue would be tough to cast. Were I going to cast a black woman, my first choice would be Iman. If I weren't casting a black woman, and was only looking for striking facial features, I'd go with Aliya Wolf, though I have no idea how well she can act. (If you look her up online, you'd better be 18! :D).

Too young for some of them... especially Alustriel and Laeral. And most of them are too "A list." You need character actors, not superstars.

Let's look at likely actresses that usually play in action movies...
Claudia Black (Farscape, Queen of the Damned, Pitch Black)
Peta Wilson (La Femme Nikita, League of Extrodinary Gentlemen)
Kelly Hu (X2-Lady Deathstrike)
Connie Nielson (Gladiator, The Hunted)
Kristana Loken (Terminator 3)
Natasha Henstridge (Species)
Mila Jovovich (Resident Evil)
Famke Janssen (X men, Goldeneye)
Monica Bellucci (Matrix, Brothers Grim, Brotherhood of the Wolf)
Leonor Varela (Blade II)
Dina Meyer (Starship Troopers, Johnny Mnemonic)
Alexa Davelos (Chronicals of Riddick)
Linda Fiorentino (Men in Black)
Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon)

Your girlfriend has good taste in actresses. :) There's only one on the list I don't recognize (Shannyn Sossamon).

I don't know why people are still on the "Drow are black, let's cast a black actress"... When Drow black (pitch black, jet black, obsidian black) and negroid black (warm browns ranging from milk coffee to deep almost red black (which is not the same as pitch black)) are two different things. Please, just cast someone with elven like features as Qilue... Even a black actress is going to need her skin colour completely changed, it doesn't save any time or money. :)

Other comments on that list:

Michelle Pfiffer as Storm? I'm sorry, I can't see it. Even Lucy Lawless would be closer to how I see Storm (and I don't even think Lawless is even remotely suited to playing Storm*). Actually, come to think of it, Michelle is closer to how I see Alustriel than Storm. :) Kiera Knightly is a beautiful woman, but she's not Alustriel... there's something too young and cutesy about her (though her IMDB picture is not how I remember her, but that could be the hair cut she's sporting in that picture!), and Alustriel is a mature and beautiful woman.

Jada Pinkett is a name that gave me real pause. All the sisters, aside from Qilue are white (they're quarter elves, they've never been said to have dark skin)! Is your girlfriend suggesting that they'd do Sylune with CGI (which they'd probably have to) and use Jada Pinkett to provide the voice? Otherwise I can't see it.

I really like Angelina Jolie, but I honestly would never in my wildest dreams cast her as any of the Seven. Of the Seven, she's got the temprement for Storm, perhaps Dove, and maybe even the Simbul as has been suggested, but she has the looks of none, IMHO.

Lucy Lawless might be the best choice we have for Dove. Unfortunately, I (and I'm sure I'm not the only one) look at her and see Xena... Making her hair silvery white might be enough to tip the scales, but you might have to give her some pretty strict direction so she doesn't slip into uber-farcical/Xena mode (I haven't seen Lawless in anything other than Xena: Warrior Princess, so I really don't know what sort of an actress she is beyond that one role - and looking at her IMDB entry, we can see she's only done one thing of real note since Xena, and that's a nameless role in Spider-man (2002)).

Shannyn Sossamon... Hmm. From the pictures I've managed to dig up of her, I can't see her as any of the Seven, and certianly not Laeral. She's good looking, but not beautiful... if you catch my drift?

*Storm is my absolute favorite of the Seven Sisters. I think it would be easy to disappoint me with any casting decision regarding her. Personally I still think the best way to do a movie with the Seven in it would be to animate it. Casting voices is a little easier, IMHO.

I think the Seven Sisters were often depicted in text (sometimes in pictures depending artist) as beautiful silver-haired thirty-something-ish women with slightly elven features. Most of the suggestions so far have been actresses who are either way too young or way too old. A younger actress might be able to pull off looking ten years older, and since they're immortal so I'd rather lean for a more conservative image of youth. It is hard to make most actresses who are nearing late 40ish (and who look it) appear like 30 year olds and do it convincingly.

Also, ever notice how some people look terrible as blondes, that no matter how well the dye job is, their looks just doesn't seem right. Having silver hair will frame the features similiar to how platinum blonde hair will, so a person who looks good as a blonde will likely look similarly good in silver hair. It's a toss up for those who have been brunettes for most of their lives. And those who look weird as blondes will look just as weird with silver hair.

And I agree that while a curvy and voluptuous figure is quite enticing, I'd image that it might get in the way, especially for the warrior types. For those who are more magic oriented, it probably won't matter, but all of the sisters seem to have an athletic build.

I would love to see the Simbul in live action as Todd Lockwood originally drew her for the 3e FRCS.

Kelly Hu (X2-Lady Deathstrike)

I believe in the other thread you listed her for a good Qilue and I think I would agree with that. I haven't seen X-Men 2 in quite a while, but I do remember she was incredibly beautiful and exotic. She also had a nice atheletic build and seemed to be rather tall for an asian actress. I doubt she's 6 foot but I think she could pull it off fairly well. Though, I don't think she spoke more than a couple words if that, so I'm not sure if she could actually act that part.

Well, I'll join in on this discussion on actresses:
First, Michelle Pfieffer is in her late 40s, and it shows.
Iman is in her 60s, and she looks in her mid to late 50s. She was a supermodel in the 70s, and the last film she was in where she looked half-decent was Star Trek 6, and that was 1991.
Michelle Pfiefer was always my personal choice to reprise Catwoman... but, that was a long time ago. remember also that she was Tony Montana's sister in Scarface, back in the early 80s.
My point is, anyone playing the Seven Sisters in Live action should at least be sexy enough to appeal to the younger fanboys as good eye-candy without any of them saying "woa- she's older than my Mom!"
Personally, I can't think of anyone. Hence, I believe a Seven Sisters movie should be animated. Solves the problem of casting.
Look at the Demon Stone game- Kelben looked like Kelben and the voice of Patrick Stewart couldn't have been any more perfect. We know what Patrick Stewart looks like in real life, but his voice lent incredibly well to such a familiar character as Blackstaff.
On the same topic, I think an animated movie of Elminster would be awesome with Anthony Hopkins doing his voice. Whattya think? :)

11-27-05, 08:59 AM
Well, I do agree that animated would be the way to go for the best chance of success. I mean, I don't think I have ever seen a really good fantasy translation from a book or game that was a success until Lord of the Rings. Stuff like Willow and Robin Hood were good, but that doesn't have the difficulty of translating a true high fantasy setting. Judging by how most translations into live action movies tend to turn out, I would happily push the movie into animation. I wouldn't mind anime, but I also thing that CG stuff can be pretty amazing, especially after seeing Advent Children. I loved the first Final Fantasy movie, but it was just a start. Advent Children showed just how amazing stuff can be. I would LOVE to see a DnD movie made like that with some popular characters.

Not that I doubt their talent or look but if you want people to see the flick, you need some bigger names. Lord of the Rings didn't have super huge celebs (at the time) but the movie itself was enough of a draw, and even then I think it was considered a massive gamble.

Heya,

Hudson Leick and Kristen Cloke? Is this fictional movie coming out in 1996? Those actress are old news. Not that I doubt their talent or look but if you want people to see the flick, you need some bigger names. Lord of the Rings didn't have super huge celebs (at the time) but the movie itself was enough of a draw, and even then I think it was considered a massive gamble.

Actually, no you don't need bigger names. :) You actually need smaller names (or people who are currently "undiscovered"), and need to forget the idea of this movie being big. It might pull a LotR, which would be good, but if the movie is good and it fails, it's destined to become a cult classic. It is win-win situation if you go with smaller names but, most importantly, hire a decent writer (and unforunately, I don't mean Ed Greenwood himself. I'm happy for him to write the story (as long as he doesn't fall into his usual habit of overwriting and then letting the editors cut it to ribbons), but they'll need a good person to turn it into a screenplay).

(And who says LotR had "smaller" names? There were quite a few A-list actors in that film. And many of them had names before they did the movie, such as Cate Blanchett, Sir Ian McKellen, Sean Astin, and Christopher Lee - none of them had their names "made" by the movie.)

This is going into my signature.

Anyway, for Storm, Todd Lockwood (or was it Sam Wood's?) art of Silverhand in FRCS looks startingly like Jennifer Lopez. I say cast her. Yes, J-Lo isn't very tall, but she's very athletic, and has the facial features of Storm, and she's not that bad of an actress. Cast her.

And Sean Bean greatly contributed to make LotR what it is. Sean is my favorite actor, and would be right at home in a Forgotten Realms movie.

Sean Astin??? Goonies, Whitewater Summer, Rudy, and 50 First Dates does not an A lister make:) Though I do think he's pretty good.

These are mostly big names for people who like movies, mostly pretty good movies. But they aren't names like Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie, like household names. Ian McKellen is a superb actor, but few everyday people know who he is. He mostly does like theatre stuff. Younger people recognized him only as Magneto really. Cate Blanchett does mostly slower, more mature movies that your everday moviegoer doesn't really see. They are all great actors, but they aren't names known by everyone from a child to the elderly. That is what makes it good. You want people who know how to act and have experience, but not people that will effect the hype of the movie just by their name. You cast a DnD movie with Tom Cruise and you got people going to it just cause he's in it. Then because he's in it, they're gonna judge it more harshly because he's in it. If household names would have been in LotR I would have just shook my head.

As for males I would splice the lead singer from the Dandy Warhols with Jonny Depp and the androdgynous villian from the Stargate film and then apply all the costume bits. Maybe add a splash of Marc Dacascos and Brandon Lee as well (fantasy remember).

I think Daniel Johns from Silverchair when he was a little younger would be a really good elf.

You know who might just make a great Elminster... Billy Connelly (Last Samurai, Boondock Saints).

Awsome idea! :D

I always forget about him being an actor, but every role he's played has been well done. I can totally see him as El!

If this movie ever did happen, Peter Jackson should Produce and Direct. He is excellent in the fantasy genre.

PJ also agreed to do the Hobbit, but he said he would not do it for another few years. So I would say that he's kinda burnt out on the fantasy stuff right now.

Maybe you don't know yet, but he's also going to be a major CTU agent in Day 5 of 24 :D .

on my previous note, I saw the DVD for DnD 2 in Wal-Mart today. Looking at the back of the case, I shuddered when I saw the single picture on it, looks very cheap indeed. On the front of the case it said 'from the producer of the Matrix'. Um, Joel Silver was the producer of the Matrix and his name was not listed on the case credits ANYWHERE, especially as producer. After the bona-fide disaster that was part 1, I don't think Silver would want his good name sullied by participating in more of the same.
Courtney Solomon's name is in the credits, so it's good to see he didn't completely hit rock-bottom after the first one.
I'll be avoiding the sequel I think.

Maybe they were referring to some "no name" producer?

Which no-name producer? Joel Silver was the ONLY producer on the Matrix... come to think of it I remember a back-issue of Dragon also said that Silver would be producing it as well. You'd probably know the issue I'm referring to. I think it was the issue with the thief wearing the scarf over his face holding a huge diamond on the cover.

Speaking of big-name producers and RPG movies, I wonder if the upcoming Rifts movie will be good, seeing as how Jerry Bruckheimer's attached to it. A little off-topic yes, but if that turns out to really revolutionize RPG-based films, maybe they can wipe the slate clean and do a DnD movie properly with a decent budget and actors who don't ham their performances to death. I still can't believe that such a great actor as Jeremy Irons, playing an evil wizard no less did a repeat performance of the villain from the DnD cartoon, without the single horn on his head.

Elements of a good DnD movie:

-Dragons portrayed as they should be, as the ultimate power, not bestial slavering beasts.

-Larger than life heroes who can be taken seriously.

-Villains who are, well, villainous. We have to be convinced they're evil.

-Characters overall who are not charicatures from other films.

-Dwarves who are not as tall as humans.

-Elves who do not weigh close to 200 lbs.

-Humanoid monsters who do not look like they walked off the set of Buffy or Angel.

-And please, for god's sake, no Han/Leia bickering between the main characters- it's been done!

-The comic-relief sidekick really has to go- again, it's been done and handled poorly almost every time. Snails= Jar Jar.

_Beholders should do more than float from one side of the screen to the other- in a lot of games, they're the main villain!

Although in defense of DnD: The Movie, I was rather impressed with the trapped maze sequence- it gave me ideas for a game I ran later.

To me, a movie about the Seven Sisters or any FR-based film for that matter, would have to meet the above criteria- In other words, a real heartfelt effort would have to go into it to make longtime fans happy with the end result.
My wife watched it with me and she said: "What a corny show! And you've played that game for so many years?" First impressions are usually the most important.

He'd have to do it soon before Ian Holm gets too old to convincingly play a younger Bilbo.

I always see Alustriel as Nicole Kidman,

For Storm someone more active, like Charlize Theron as a blonde.

I think Iman as Quilue is a great choice although she would have to shed a few years.

the others I am drawing a blank on.
