| Moscone02-28-05, 05:28 AM | I'm an old school kind of guy. Elmore and Easley are all-time #1 on my list Wayne Reynolds has come in at #2 beating out Brom who now moves to #3. Baxa comes in at #4, mainly for the bang-up work he did on Dark Sun. I was especially impressed with his stuff in Serpent Kingdoms. James Ryman is certainly threatening to hedge out Baxa and Brom for the #3 position and I would love to see his stuff in actual books rather than just Dragon/Dungeon magazines. He should do Heavy Metal covers too! Wayne England is a good artist too, but I seriously wish he wouldn't give every single one of his creatures the exact same face, I start to mistake a Geriviar for a Lizard King for a Skin Dancer for a Tren. Lockwood's stuff is really damn good too. Totally redefined the dragons. |
| Kuje3102-28-05, 11:35 AM | I'm an old school kind of guy. Elmore and Easley are all-time #1 on my list Ditto, but I'll add Parkinson as well. :) Also the artist who drew the Seven Sisters in that same named sourcebook. I miss 2e's black and white FR art. |
| Sephyrill02-28-05, 08:45 PM | My best favourite is Todd Lockwood :D yes, his dragons are awesome, although i dislike the gold dragon... his Prototype was wayyy better ;) Sam Wood, Wayne England and Larry Elmore (wow... this guy can use a variety of styles...) are also very very good artists the 2nd Ed. color arts were great pieces technically and in detail, but the characters sometimes looked a bit... as if hopped out of the 80's ;) Ok, the black/white arts didn't have that problem, they were just beautiful |
| Moscone02-28-05, 10:13 PM | Parkinson's renderings of people areincredibly realistic, and I always marvel at his art. My only complaint, really, is that his hairstyles on females are VERY dated to the 80s. Case in point, the cover to Daughter of the Drow, and the depiction of the Simbul on the old Spellbound boxed set...oh wait, that's Fred Fields! Never mind, he's the one I'm referring to. :embarrass |

| Ziatyn Phoenixwolf03-01-05, 01:35 AM | Ron Spencer and Sam Wood. |
| orinbalenovic03-01-05, 02:31 AM | My favorite DnD artists are by far Todd Lockwood, Wayne Reynolds and Sam Wood. I like Lockwood and Wood for their "photorealistic" style (especially Lockwood), and for their ability to capture a moment without it losing any if it's intenseness And Wayne Reynolds...quite the opposite of the artists mentioned above. I like his cartoonish style and great attention to even the tiniest detail. Oh yeah and there's the fact that every time I see his artwork I get the desire to grab the biggest, heaviest thing around and go smash some monsters! WAR!! :evillaugh |
| Tempus66503-01-05, 03:20 AM | Kalman Andrasofszky makes great art IMO. As does Wayne England. |
| ClobberinTime03-01-05, 07:19 PM | Stephen Belledin, Wayne England and Jeremy Jarvis- I like the pseudo realistic feel, you know they are cartoons, but they have a really real feel, know what I mean nudge nudge wink wink say no more.... |
| Brynne03-02-05, 09:23 AM | Brom and Lockwood come in both at #1 on my list... I find it absolutely impossible to choose oen over the other. Second would be Sam Wood. |
| Darkmore03-02-05, 10:41 AM | Whenever Wayne England draws a dwarven character I'm stunned ! ! Check out the Battle rager from RoF, the dwarven pantheon from F&P and so on ... amazing work. And his weapons are great two, I love the colors he uses ... Lockwood and Wood would be my next choices. |
| Nightsinger03-02-05, 11:00 AM | I'm torn between two. Todd Lockwood does some fantastic pieces, and Marc Sasso is just legendary. I love the Epic Blackguard picture he did for Epic LEvel Handbook. Me |
| Faraer03-02-05, 11:00 AM | Valerie Valusek, Ned Dameron, Valerie Valusek, Ned Dameron, and Ed Greenwood. (That's for the Realms. For D&D is different questions.) |
| Cli' San Aquanova03-02-05, 11:57 AM | My favorite artist is also my pal, Raven Mimura. I love Wayne Reynolds', Sam Wood's, and Todd Lockwood's work though. Those four are absolutely awesome. -C'SA :u:Bring Back Merfolk!!!:u: |
| DRdrizzt13beauOW03-02-05, 04:56 PM | Brom and Lockwood (the only one who can draw a decent drizzt lol now he doenst look like an old man :P ) |
| WizO_BigSister03-02-05, 05:15 PM | This seems like a good opportunity to shamelessly plug my list of D&D artists :D The ULTIMATE D&D Gallery Links List (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=277575) |
| Acererak03-03-05, 09:52 AM | Brom and Lockwood come in both at #1 on my list... I find it absolutely impossible to choose oen over the other. Second would be Sam Wood. Same here, with the exception that Lockwood edges out slightly over Brom. |
| RogerWilco03-05-05, 06:10 PM | I like a lot of the D&D art, especially the FR books. But the number one artist for me is Lockwood. |
| ericlboyd03-05-05, 06:26 PM | My favorite is Todd Lockwood, hands down. I actually own an original of his (the depiction of Garagos for Powers & Pantheons), and I can attest that his work is even better in the original. --Eric |
| Moscone03-07-05, 07:00 AM | I'll add Raven Mimura as well. Michael Sutfin also deserves special mention. When I picked up my copy of Serpent Kingdoms, I gave a cursory glance and said "eh, cartoony". Then I went back and studied it again, and just the deep colors he uses adds a kind of 3-D quality that suggests this guy should work in an animation department. Folks are always saying "FR movie would be awesome." I agree. Animate it, and have Sutfin be the animator. Just look at the cover of SK, and tell me that you can't see moving pictures here. ;) |
| Xysma03-07-05, 09:44 AM | Brom Todd Lockwood Jeremy Jarvis Steven Belledin Wayne Reynolds There has been so much great art over the years, it's hard to choose a favorite. But these guys stand out as my favorites. |
| primemover00303-09-05, 06:58 PM | Brom for every cover in the WotSQ series. Lockwood for the covers of Homeland, Exile, and Sojourn (though the old Sojourn was clearly one of Easley's finest) and his black and whites in the FRCS WAR is my new favorite. Jeremy Jarvis, Kalman Andrasofski, Vinod Rams... Least favorites: Adam Rex, Dennis Crabapple McClain |
| Kaladorn Longblade03-11-05, 01:54 AM | My favorite artists would probably be Elmore, Caldwell, and Easley, though Todd Lockwood is definently moving up on my list. |
| Moscone03-11-05, 08:56 PM | Brom for every cover in the WotSQ series. Lockwood for the covers of Homeland, Exile, and Sojourn (though the old Sojourn was clearly one of Easley's finest) and his black and whites in the FRCS I defintely think Lockwood is one of the best FR artists, and DnD as a whole ever. Mind you, I don't like that he changed the look of Drizzt's scimitars after they've looked the same on every cover from day 1, and then commissioned actual blades to look like the new versions. If I had those on my wall, old school gamers would come over and say "neat swords. where'd you get 'em?" whereas if they were the older style ones, said gamers would come over and say "Whoa! Dude! Drizzt swords!" And I mean that's the point of getting them, right? Twinkle and Icingdeath were so recognizable before. They look cool now with their new look, but they're not the same swords I know from looking at a Drizzt cover. My regrets as far as the artists go, I picked up the Fiend Folio yesterday, and it seemed Easley was relegated to "blobby creature" duty, when he originally helped define the look for DnD. It was good to see Baxa had a lot in there, same with Reynolds. I like Kevin McCann's stuff in FF, he definitely has kind of an Easley style, kind of an older DnD artist style. Hope to see more of his work in future books. |
| Tarus03-11-05, 09:35 PM | Tony DiTerlizzi. I loved his art in the 2E Monstrous Manual and everything since. I'd also love to see John Howe do some D&D art. |
| Kyanite03-12-05, 12:43 AM | elmore  |
| primemover00303-13-05, 10:33 PM | Yeah Easley should never be allowed to illustrate the cover of a MM or MC ever again.... By far his worst work. Blobby style... I like that. Funny thing half the creatures on the cover weren't even in the MC's!!! He should stick to Undead... and Parkinson. Two of the best. (brom is #3 for undead) |
| Another Gnome03-14-05, 11:21 AM | Lockwood's orcs and dragons have redefined the meaning of those words. |
| Moscone03-14-05, 08:59 PM | Yeah Easley should never be allowed to illustrate the cover of a MM or MC ever again.... By far his worst work. Blobby style... I like that. Funny thing half the creatures on the cover weren't even in the MC's!!! He should stick to Undead... and Parkinson. Two of the best. (brom is #3 for undead) Ack!!! Easley rocks!!! I think his best work to date is the covers to the 2E Players and DM's Guides. I'd love to get those as posters and laminate them professionally for my living room. Here's a question to everyone- when the DM sets up an encounter for you to face, and shows you the pic of it in the book, do you envision yourself battling a Wayne Reynolds creature if the art is Reynolds? or a Lockwood creature if it's drawn by Lockwood, or does your own "internal artist" draw the creature in your head when you're fighting it? |
| Zyerre03-14-05, 10:09 PM | todd lockwood- his drizzt pics are good, but why dont they ever draw the mithril chainmail? war- his pics are just awesome |
| Another Gnome03-15-05, 03:39 AM | Maybe Drizzt has his chainmail on, but the metal is hidden underneath his coat. Considering mithral chain is "traditionally" light and flexible enough to wear under clothes, and also considering the weather where Drizzt moves about, it'd only make sense for him to wear something over it to keep the metal from getting cold and wet; even if mithral was impervious to corrosion, cold metal against chin or neck would be unpleasant during winters at any rate. Regardless, here's all the mithral chinmail we need: link (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/dmg35_gallery/DMG35_PG221_WEB.jpg) :inlove: |
| Crust03-15-05, 07:54 AM | Of course I love Easley, Elmore, Reyonlds, Brom, Fields, and a number of others. Wayne England seems to draw everything from either the front or the side, especially objects. It gets repetitive. I also like Jeremy Jarvis. His vision is strange, but cool. I will say that some of the art in recent books has been really bad. There are a few artists who just plain stink. There are some drawings of the warlock in the Complete Arcane that are very, very poor. It makes me wonder how some of the art makes the cut. |
| Another Gnome03-15-05, 11:42 AM | Well, the FR art has been quite nice lately (Lost Empires). "Bad" art probably makes the cut because it's less expensive than ordering wall-sized paintings from, say, Mr. Lockwood. Not to mention it takes time and effort to finish a piece, and even if an artist gets paid well for it doesn't necessarily mean that inspiration comes up just like that - especially when it's something specifically ordered and with a set deadline. |
| TheRedWizard03-16-05, 05:12 PM | I think Sam Wood is really good....his drawings are not repeatitives and originals... Todd Lockwood is doing pretty well too |
| Kalithor03-16-05, 06:25 PM | I always just kinda think Drizzt's chain is under his leathers. After all, its pretty cold where he lives. Hey, I'm glad to see this thread, cuz I've had a question, and didn't really know where to place it. This seems as good a place as any. Does anybody know how you would go about submitting art and trying to get a job working for WotC? I've been amassing a portfolio for kicks really, but a LOT of people have told me I should submit it and see what they think. Any ideas, or leads? Oh, and just to state a favorite, I like Reynolds and England most, but Ron Spencer is quickly climbing to my favorites list too! For covers, I like Adam Rex's stuff. I saw one he had in a Dragon magazine for an ad. It was a blackdragon and it said something like "We invented the boss fight." Awesome piece. |
| WizO_BigSister03-16-05, 07:41 PM | Kalithor the best place to have discussions about fantasy art in general and trying to promote your own art is Creative Corner - Art Gallery (http://boards1.wizards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=391) |
| Kalithor03-16-05, 08:11 PM | Thanks, Big Sister! I knew I could count on your ever-effective promptness. |
| booger03-18-05, 12:38 PM | What about Erol Otus and D.A. Trampier from 1st edition? those guys rocked. |
| Another Gnome03-18-05, 06:32 PM | I finally realized it - Erol Otus's style reminds me of Tove Jansson's classic Moomintrolls! That's why the psychedelic look was so eerily familiar... Jansson (http://andrejkoymasky.com/liv/fam/bioj1/jans3/jans2e.jpg) Otus (http://minipainting-guild.net/eo/Goat_of_1000_Young.jpg) |
| A Chosen of Mystra03-22-05, 07:42 AM | Wayne Reynolds and Sam Wood :) -Chosen |
| Darth K'Trava03-24-05, 10:54 PM | I'd say that Todd Lockwood is my fav of anyone who does FR art (that I can think of at this late hour of nearly 11PM...) |
| scruffydude703-27-05, 06:32 PM | Todd Lockwood is one of my favorite artists in general, let alone FR artist. I also like Sam Wood's and Jeremy Jarvis' art. I don't know if Des Hanley would qualify as a FR artist, but he has done art for a lot of the D&D miniatures, and I think his work is exceptional. He had a web site under construction, but lately I haven't been able to find it. Does anybody know what happened to that? |
| RogerWilco03-27-05, 07:42 PM | I've just been flicking trough a few of my books to see whom I like, but a lot of stuff is realy good, especially in the Lost Empires. Reynolds, Mimura, Rex, Sardinha, Despain, Locke, Horsley, Engle, Belledin, O'Connor, some of Cox, Moore, Hudnut, Prescott, Garres, England, some of Jarvis, some of Beet, etc. Stuff by Baxa, Spencer and Miracola very often makes me feel odd, even though the quality is good I don't realy appreciate it. But there are also artists that I've only seen very few pictures from, like Djordevic, Dornnaus, but that seem nice. A good picture is in my opinion very important for PrC's and monsters, as it gives the first impression. Switch the Divine Oracle and Void Disciple pictures for example. |
| Yogo03-28-05, 07:12 AM | Sam Wood, by all means. I love his Minotaur for MM and apprechiate the best drawn Draegloth ever in MoF :) Todd Lockwood, for the Mind Flayer in MM and obviously his Dragons |
| jakothewoods03-28-05, 10:30 AM | This is gonna sound silly, but I always like Erol Otus's artwork. For mainstream D&D anyway. It had a kind of... ethereal quality to it, despite being a little cartoony. For the Realms, I really like Lockwood. I think they made a good choice there. |
