| Todesherr10-28-06, 06:53 AM | They are after all almost polar opposites in alignment; Jarlaxe is CN and Artemis is LE...how does this mix? |
| MerrikCale10-28-06, 09:16 AM | Its all about the bling-bling |
| Duagloth10-28-06, 09:31 AM | Zaknafein was CN wasn`t Jaraxle NE? Hmm |
| The Ubbergeek10-28-06, 11:14 AM | Jarlaxe is neutral something, maybe chaotic too. |

| Davidw10-28-06, 03:24 PM | Why do they hang out? Because they sell novels. |
| The Ubbergeek10-28-06, 04:05 PM | Friendship, like love, is often quite hard to understand how it work. *shrugs* Perhaps they work well as a team? |
| Ironferret10-28-06, 05:30 PM | Nicely said Davidw :) but for the rest of you last time I cheeked ol' Jar was evil and Artie is evil , and if anyone remember from the books he held Catabree captive and did nothing to her, so it may be hard to grasp but he has a code of conduct. This relationship is one of convenience & sh@ts and giggles.:P |
| bondious10-28-06, 06:34 PM | I'm kinda on the fence about that alignment Jarlaxle would be, either CN or NE. I'm THINKING that he's probably NE, but sometimes he just doesn't seem all that evil. But then I think about that part where Cadderly looked at Artemis and Jarlaxle (probably cast Know Alignment) and said that they were "beyond redemption" or something, which is a pretty good signal in my mind that they're both evil. I'd say NE, 'cause he's definitely a bad guy, and fits into society when it suits him, but he doesn't try to control through sheer force alone. Put that together with a person who sees potential gain in everyone and anything, and there you go. Heck, that's probably why he didn't harm Catti-brie, so he would gain a measure of favor (or at least favorable consideration) from Drizzt, who could be a BIG potential ally or pawn in one of his schemes. |
| Raelan_Harpell10-28-06, 06:43 PM | Various game supplements (2nd Ed. Villains' Lorebook, 3rd Ed. FRCS, Underdark) state Jarlaxle as being Neutral Evil and Entreri as Lawful Evil. In truth, I've never seen Entreri go out of his way to obey the law, so I'd think him more a neutral evil type. I'm not sure about Jarlaxle, however; at times he seems chaotic, other times lawful, and sometimes even acts as if he's good aligned. He's definitely evil overall, but the exact flavor of evil is open to debate. |

He's definitely evil overall, but the exact flavor of evil is open to debate. Maybe Artemis is Lawful Evil because he's always worked within the complicated structure of the Calimshani underworld. He's freelance, but is always working for SOMEONE. And even now that he's out of Calmishan, he's STILL working for others: Jarlaxle, those dragon sisters, etc. Basically put, he's very independant and doesn't really "follow orders", but his entire life has been about working FOR others. This is different with Jarlaxle, whom I think is Neutral Evil. True, he's always had to work within the complicated web of Menzoberranzan, but he's always remained SEPERATE from that, to varying degrees. His mercenary band has always been a power in-and-of itself. Furtharmore, his way about controlling that band is neither Lawful or Chaotic, but somewhere inbetween. If he was Chaotic Evil, for instance, he would rule by force and threat, while if he was Lawful Evil he'd control by a set of rules and regulations. Jarlaxle does both. His prefered way of getting someone onboard and keeping them there is to make the deal mutually beneficial, but he's not above making some pretty poiniant and none-to-subtle threats to keep his people in line. |
| Todesherr10-29-06, 01:07 AM | The wikipedia article says he is CN...to back this alignment up, he often said how much he loved the Spider Queen's Chaos.... |
| Davidw10-29-06, 05:39 AM | I think people read too much into alignments. Just because a character is of chaotic evil alignment doesn't mean he has to be chaotic and evil the entire time. Likewise, I'm sure you could find quite a few lawful good types who haven't led totally lawful and good lives. |
| Lord_Madrigan10-29-06, 09:31 PM | Why do Artemis and Jarlaxe hang out? As of the end of the latest novel They Don't hang out Anymore |
| MasterGrazzt10-29-06, 09:32 PM | The slash factor. |
| Karsus the Mad10-29-06, 09:42 PM | They were lovers and they had a disagreement about who should be the man?:embarrass Artemis won by racial default... |
| Link18210-30-06, 01:43 AM | um, wow |
| Gallameed10-30-06, 11:14 AM | Jarlaxe smells very nice, extreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee emly nice and wears a feather in his hat. Artemis is permanently kicking out a maximum man stink that would make even a rugged bugger like Captain Kirk his boi with a single whiff, so he walks around with the uber fragrant drow to cover up the ultimate alpha male faerunmones until its time for him to unleash the beast. and thats canon. |
| Duagloth10-30-06, 11:19 AM | Jaraxles official write ups stat him as NE. Wikipedia is no official source so I dont really care what is standing there. (They also stat him as Fighter/Mage/Rogue, while he is a pure fighter in official writeups.) So by rules he is NE till new Stats for him are published. |

| CzarGarrett10-30-06, 02:18 PM | I have a feeling that part of it is due to Enteri's personal code of honor/obession with Drizzt being rather foreign and intriguing. So while Enteri is out doing stuff, Jarlaxe is kind of along for the ride to see what will happen next. |

| Lord Karsus10-31-06, 12:37 PM | -I never liked Jarlaxle much until I just finished Promise of the Witch-King. Now, I appreciate the Baenre much more than before. |
| Jiggawha11-01-06, 10:56 AM | Why do they hang out? It cleary says in Promise of the Witch-King that Jarlaxle is manipulating him, but only because Entreri is aloof to everything, he doesn't care much and doesn't have any goals in life |
| Aratharn11-02-06, 05:57 AM | :teach: everybody needs friends ( nobody what's to be allone :allalone:) and they seem to get along quite well:pint: , their firendship seems to be the only stable thing they have left (or ever had), it's a bit like "Bad Boys for Life" it's not that difficult after all:banghead: this will get really interesting:plotting: |

I dont think you can be chaotic and run his organization as well as he does. I think he has his chaotic periods when he gets bored. |
| Kin-Kaal V'ryce11-09-06, 02:27 AM | I think Artemis is LE and Jarlaxle is NE with streaks(moments) of chaos. I dont think you can be chaotic and run his organization as well as he does. I think he has his chaotic periods when he gets bored. See, I agree with this view. I would place Jarlaxle squarely in th NE catagory. Yeah, Jarlaxle has his chaotic moments, but then he turns around and does stuff like treating Catti-brie honorably (lawfully you might say). He has both chaotic and lawful streaks to his personality (which is the whole point behind being neutral; you have elements of both within you). Likewise, Entreri is pretty Lawful. He does have a strict personal code which is usually the sign of a lawful alignment. True, he may not follow the laws of any particular land, but he does stick pretty much to his own personal code of ethics. |
| Aratharn11-09-06, 03:26 PM | when Artemis was younger he had more NE tendancies, his moral code became stricter when he grew older, partly because he had discovered how lonly and empty his life was and wanted to "better" it and........... who knows? maybe he gets LN someday, he will definatly hold to his strict moral code |
| bondious11-09-06, 05:22 PM | when Artemis was younger he had more NE tendancies, his moral code became stricter when he grew older, partly because he had discovered how lonly and empty his life was and wanted to "better" it and........... who knows? maybe he gets LN someday, he will definatly hold to his strict moral code If he stopped killing people for money, then I'd say this is a possibility. Or MAYBE if he only took assignments agasint people who "deserved it", like murderers, slave traders and rapists. The thing is that Artemis doesn't usually kill unless he needs to. He's not a serial killer or a murderous brute, and will only USUALLY kill if challenged or he's in danger, or for a commission (and those are USUALLY criminals wanted dead by OTHER criminals). That "unless he needs to" part, though, extends to people "in his way" or, in the case of if he's injured, he'll use his Jeweled Dagger to drain any happless victim's lifeforce to heal himself...that kinda stuff. This is probably one of the BIG reasons he's evil: his near total disregard for life. If this outlook changed, along with his attitude towards his profession, then I could probably see him becoming Lawful Neutral. If he goes back to his regular ways, however, no matter the current changes he's encountered emotionally, I think he'll always remain Lawful Evil. |
| JaiaDrottsingr11-09-06, 05:48 PM | I have a problem with alignments. No one is strictly one side or the other. You take the story of Klyath Whatever (Guy with moonblade that activated after one thought, what will happen to his daughter) He's really just Evil with Neutral and Lawful influences and a strong base of Chaotic qualities. Not enough to really be any of the subtypes, though. :raincloud Post Script BananaRanDomnity* went down dramatically over post hiatus. *= Source of cheer and personality. |
| longarm11-09-06, 06:14 PM | You take the story of Klyath Whatever (Guy with moonblade that activated after one thought, what will happen to his daughter) Eliath Craulnober is that guys' name. I've always looked at his life as being a tradgedy, and I still think he will do some great deed someday... -Longarm |
| Lord Karsus11-09-06, 08:49 PM | Eliath Craulnober is that guys' name. I've always looked at his life as being a tradgedy, and I still think he will do some great deed someday... -Longarm -I've always seen his story as a bit sad as well. It is sad, actually. Anyway, I don't see reform in Elaith's future. There has been literature about him since his dormant Moonblade activated, and he does not seem to be walking the path of redemption. |
| Jiggawha11-10-06, 04:06 AM | Agreed on what you've said, no matter what he has done (crime syndicate and all) it's still a sad story |
